Feminism In History

The opinion on registering women for the draft is that women cannot handle it and that there is no place for women in violence. However women are born and raised in this country the same as men are. Today it is commonplace for women to have all the responsibilities as men and they rise to the occasion. Women are just as strong as men and in some ways more. They should be treated as such.

Women in the Progressive Era began with little to no rights at all. They didn't have any other role in society especially for poor white women except to stay at home and do what their husbands tell them to do. Over time women began to give themselves an identity, and rights through feminism, icons, and taking action. They began to make a change and make a bang culturally. Jane Adams on of the first most prominent female activists created this idea of "the new woman," during the Progressive Era.

Many women later began to use the term “feminism” to describe their reform efforts that stressed social justice, economic equality, and sexual freedom. (Book, 533) Margaret Sanger is a woman that pushed for widespread use of contraception. Early advocates of women’s rights thought that only educated women should vote, but progressive reformers wanted all women to have that right. I believe that despite all controversial views this event was a huge shift for social change and future breakthrough in this area. Having women included in the military draft would allow them to be viewed differently in the eyes of men. Kelly Antoine in her article, “9 Reasons Why Women Should Have To Register For The Draft” she states, “These women are bringing louder, more confident female voices to the table, working to change policies and challenging the long-standing culture of the services,” Antoine may be stating this about women already in the armed forces, but this can still apply to women being included in the draft. Incorporating women in the draft would allow the opportunity for new ideas and progression to be apart of the military during the nation’s crisis. Some people are opposed to women being including in the draft because they will not be able to keep up with the men. In an article written by Jude Eden, throughout her entire piece she makes the argument that women would simply not be able to meet the same level of excellence as men because they are unable to meet the same physical requirements.

Women in early mid-1800s started to fight for equal rights more than ever. Since American males have been granted more rights since the American independence, women started to question the reasons behind why they are not getting the same rights as men. This started a generations of women fighting for their equal rights. From the arguments presented by first wave feminists for women’s right and the evidence against inclusion by their detractors, the first wave feminists for women’s right had a better convincing argument because they did not over exaggerate their arguments and evidence to the arguments that they made.

Throughout history, sexism has went from being one of the most undiscussed topic to being one of the most diverse, controversial topics in the United States. Sexism can be described as “Unfair treatment of people because of their sex; especially; unfair treatment to women.” (Merriam- Webster) This paper will explain why sexism exists, specific cases in which sexism can be seen, sexism in the government, and offer a solution to help end this problem. Through the majority of the United States background, sexism was rarely spoken of.

Reflection #3 word count: All through history, our society has had problems with accepting the idea that women deserve the same right that men have. For example, during the 1800’s men believe that women were not strong enough to be someone in the real world; to now with men believing that a women is not capable of being someone powerful in the real world. It has taken almost 2,000 years to let women be treated as an actually human and not a poverty or an object. , to start seeing girl power and what they are able to become.

In addition, forcing women to register for the Selective Service would support feminism. Feminism is the advocacy of women’s rights on the grounds of equality to men politically, economically, and socially. The main argument that feminists proclaim is that women should be treated the same way as men are. A step in that direction would be requiring them to register for the Selective Service like men are required to. The rebutting argument is that the majority of women aren’t interested in the military and wouldn’t want to be subject to join in the event of a draft, but there are men that feel the same way but are required by law to register for the Selective Service, and will face a hefty fine or possibly jail time if they do not fill out the proper paper work and

Why are women not fighting on the front line? America does not allow women to fight on the front line because they think that women are not capable of fighting on the front line. They would not even let women who have proven that they can fight, fight. Women should be able to fight on the front line because women can be completely physically capable of fighting and women have already proven in other countries that they can fight on the front line. Women can be physically capable of serving on the front line.

A debate that has been constantly inflicted upon is whether women should be enlisted or drafted into wars. Even to the current day, the Selective Services would only take males and draft them into a war. No one wants to be forced into a war however, by passing a bill that let’s women be conscripted is a true way to reach equality between genders, to let men and women show their true patriotism and defend our country. Many conservatives still are against these new propositions for the conscription rule for example, “Senator Ted Cruz (TX-R), one of three Republicans in the Armed Services Committee to oppose the provision, said, ‘I cannot in good conscience vote to draft our daughters in to the military, sending them off to war and forcing them into combat. ’”(Women and the Draft).
