“THE REASONS BEHIND THE HARDSHIPS OF FILIPINOS ABROAD”
As a Filipino, we notice that most of our relatives work abroad. According to Wikipedia, an OFW or an Overseas Filipino Worker is a person of a Filipino origin who lives outside the Philippines. This term applies for Filipino citizens abroad for a limited, definite period such as, on a work contract. This occupation is believed to be the most populous in the working industry here in the Philippines. So, what are the reasons behind these sacrifices that they made? Every Filipino has a reason why they work abroad. What are the consequences of these decisions? Every action or every decision has its own consequences. And what do they want to establish on their lives? Because everyone is longing for a better life. Being an Overseas Filipino Worker is not easy, you have to work a hundred miles away from your loved ones and sacrifice. You would be longing for the tender hugs and kisses of your love ones to you. You need to find a job there for you to be able to earn money and support the daily needs of your family and give them a better future. Moreover, to supply money for your younger brothers and sisters who are still studying. You have that urge to let them finish their studies; so that, they would not experience the experiences that you had experienced. I grew up in a family where both of my parents work abroad. Working abroad is being wise they say. People studies hard so that someday they will

The pay was even better than working in the fields, so my father took the job. My mother, however was offered a job working at a restaurant preparing orders and cleaning tables. Meanwhile, both of my parents made a decision to stay in the U.S and
These labors first went to Hawaii and then the main U.S. continent. However, these labor immigrants did not face the same arduous restriction the Japanese labor immigrants felt. As the Filipino labor immigrants were sponsored by the HSPA, they travelled with U.S. passports and were exempt from the harsh immigration laws. Similar to the Chinese and the Japanese, only a few Filipino women came to the United States. However, the main reason Filipino women came was to avoid arranged marriage.
There is an old Moorish proverb that reads, “He who does not travel, does not know the value of man.” That quote resonates deep within me because I have a yearning to use my education to empower those in need. In order to do so, I need to see and experience the world outside of the one I am accustomed to. Curiosity is one of the traits that define the person that I am; because of this trait I always ask questions about the world around me and the people I meet. This is one of the driving forces behind my desire to venture outside of the United States to learn a new language and culture.
Besides, I have learned so much over the past few years living in America. I have join sports team and did other services that I had never done before back in Thailand. I also had the privileges to attend school for free until I got to college which is no longer free but I still need to work
The United States of the early 20th century was one with a booming economy and a hunger for power. They had expanded westward and were looking to continue to expand their territory across the seas, in order to assert their dominance as a global superpower among the powerful nations of the time. The poor relations between Cubans and their Spanish rulers eventually led to the Treaty of Paris, which is when Spain surrendered the Philippines to the United States. It was at this point that another major divide between the American people was created. Many Americans believed that attempting to gain power over as many territories as possible was a bad idea and one that went against what America was built on.
One of the challenges is having to be forced to sell their property at a severe loss before departure. Some also have to sell their stores and most of their assets. With having to sell your home, store, or assets in such little time, more got their homes sold for only a fraction of the price. Another problem is departure. Many Japanese-Americans didn’t have a way of getting back to Japan or another country.
The Philippines had been fighting for their freedom against the Spanish for many years. Naturally, when America defeated the Spaniards in the war, the Filipinos rejoiced at the thought that they may be able to finally return safely and peacefully back to their home, Manila. Where this information comes from in the text, would be: “These Filipinos believed that
The man is in charge of the house, and he is to be followed at all the times. The women are assigned to more menial jobs like sewing, gardening, cooking, and shopping. Women were very limited with how they could spend their days. The Filipino families are dependent on the father to be the bread winner. The mother is usually expected to stay at home and take care of the children even at the expense of her career.
Mr. and Mrs. Valentin mention, “sometimes they did regret immigrated to the United States since they have families and friends in the Philippines” (Personal interview with Mr. and Mrs. Valentin, 2018). In my own experience, I am 1.5 generations of Chinese American immigrants. My family and I immigrated to the U.S. in early 2004, when we have made our decision immigrated here, we abandoned our families and friends in Hong Kong. After we moved to Los Angeles, the first year my family and I did regret immigrated to the U.S. since we have few families and friend in the U.S. and majority of our families and friends were in Hong Kong. Thus, we often write letters and phone calls as the only way we feel connected with them.
i) Ethnocentric Ethnocentric is a staffing policy that generally adopted by headquarters by sending employees from the home or parent countries to the host-country. For example, Jane works in China but she is a citizen of the Malaysia, where her company is organized and headquartered.
Neoclassical Theory of Migration One of the oldest and most commonly used theory used to explain migration is the Neoclassical theory of Migration. Neoclassical Theory (Sjaastad 1962; Todaro 1969) proposes that international migration is connected to the global supply and demand for labor. Nations with scarce labor supply and high demand will have high wages that attract immigrants from nations with a surplus of labor. The main assumption of neoclassical theory of migration is led by the push factors which cause person to leave and the pull forces which draw them to come to that nation. The Neoclassical theory states that the major cause of migration is different pay and access to jobs even though it looks at other factors contributing to the departure, the essential position is taken by individual higher wages benefit element.
CONTEXT This paper is written in the context of globalisation and informal settlements in Metro Manila. It discusses how the informal settlements face a competition for shelter with the wealthy class of the society because of the constant increase in land prices in the centre of the city. It makes two major arguments: the shelter crisis in developing countries is a major consequence of globalisation due to rising land values and increasing housing demands. And, the informal settlements created due to this are forgotten by the government, urban planners and policy-makers in the city.
I think that this one could be a good reason for a lot of people who like to travel outside of the country. Another good reason for learning a foreign language is people who have learned a foreign language, when applying for a job are more likely to get the job than the person that didn’t learn a foreign language. Be more employable, knowing a foreign language can make you a useful resource for most businesses, and it helps you stand out from a crowd of job applicants. Build job skills, In the global economy,
Entrepreneurship in the Philippines is currently booming and one of the best things a person can do today is start taking action in putting up its own business or acquiring a franchise (Louren, 2017). Entrepreneurship is a state of mind. It is not identified or measured with the type of business a person is in the success of that business but rather it is the total way of life for entrepreneurs. Being an entrepreneur requires distinct personality traits such as having a risk-taking personality, need for achievement, internal focus of control, tolerance for ambiguity and having a type A behavior or striving to achieve more in less time and general competitiveness (Gilles and Mondejar, 2008). Entrepreneurship has been described as the “capacity and willingness to develop, organize and manage a business venture along with any of its risks in order to make a profit” (www.businessdictionary.com).
