Have you guys ever heard about Odysseus? He was greatest heroes in Greek mythology. He was one of the smartest and bravest heroes of all the time in Greek mythology. He was the King of Ithaca and son of Laertes and Anticlea. He faced many obstacles that tested him as a hero. The three greatest tests were: Poseidon, Circe and Scylla, and Charybdis.
One of the first obstacles he faced involved the God “Poseidon” he wanted to make Odysseus change his mind that no man is greater than the god. The god Poseidon wanted him to be more humble because he was very arrogant. The god punished him in the sea and made his journey more difficult for him. Poseidon was the god of the sea. He controlled the sea and Poseidon wanted to break Odysseus’s arrogance to become more humble.

Circe captured his men while on the journey going back home. When she tried to turn him into an animal, but she couldn’t, she liked him because he could stand up to her. She told him that if he wants his men's free, he has to stay with her for years and only that way she will free them. So, for 2 years he had to stay with her and not go anywhere. After two years passed, she freed his men and wanted him to go to “Hades” because she wanted him to know what his future would look like and she cared about him.
Finally, the third obstacles that Odysseus faced were Scylla and Charybdis. Odysseus knew that he had to go through the narrow place and he also knew that his 6 men would die. Even when he knew his men was going to die but he still went through the narrow and his 6 men’s died but he acted like he didn’t know and didn’t tell them. After that they passed through Scylla, they had another obstacle which was Charybdis, whirlpool they almost died but lucky they survived the
In the Epic poem,The Odyssey, Odysseus is portrayed as a great leader and hero. In the poem Odysseus is a brave and noble leader who fears nothing. He also is very intelligent, who knows how to get out of tough situations without hesitation. Odysseus, “The Great Sacker of Cities,” is a hero because he... because why? Odysseus demonstrates intelligence throughout.
When hearing this, Polyphemus prays to his father Poseidon, the king of the sea, to give Odysseus troubles during his voyage. He wants it to take a long time to get back home and him to only arrive there after a number of shipwrecks. He also wants Odysseus to be welcomed home to find out that his house had been invaded by men trying to replace him as king of Ithaca. If Odysseus had listened to his men telling him not to provoke the Cyclops, then Odysseus would not have been through these
He also lets his ego get in the way of his safety and the safety of others. Poseidon might not have found out about Odysseus blinding his son if Odysseus had not called out that it was him as they escaped. When they went to Circe’s island he insisted that they explore and find the natives, but all of his men ended up cursed into pigs excluding
The eight Greek evil thoughts are a set of moral codes where, when practiced, was believed that one would have a less fulfilling life as they were less of a human. In the distinguished episode by, “The Cyclops”, of the epic, The Odyssey, Odysseus and his crew encounter the Cyclops Polyphemus in his cave on the island of the Cyclopes. Using Odysseus' wits, the men manage to deceive Polyphemus and escape the cave to their ship where they row away from the dangers of the island of the Cyclopes. Although Odysseus falls prey to several of the Greek evil thoughts, the thoughts he most prominently falls prey to is Hyperephania (pride) and kenodoxia (boasting). Hyperephania is a Greek evil thought wherein one is narcissistic as they expect admiration from others when it is not deserved.
“That nightmare cannot die, be eternal evil itself-horror, and pain, and chaos; there is no fighting her, no power can fight her, all that avails is flight(Book 12. 79-82).” Circe clearly explains that the sea monster named Scylla cannot be slain but, brave Odysseus doesn’t seem to take that as a challenge he simply tells his men to keep on rowing so that they can see their home once again. Circe tells Odysseus that he must create his own plan with his men and he decides to take the risk to go through the terrifying monster such as Amphitrite, Charybdis, and Scylla. “Cyclops if ever mortal man inquire how you were put to shame and blinded, tell him Odysseus, raider of cities, took your eye: Laertes’ son, whose home’s on Ithaca (Book 9 .416-419).”
Some disagree, arguing that Odysseus is an admirable hero. They might rationalize this by stating he is a hero due to the fact that he was able to remain determined and courageous despite the hardships he and his crew faced. In fact, Odysseus is valiant enough to trick the giant Cyclops, Polyphemus, that had trapped them inside of his cave, stating ‘“Nobody is my name. My father and mother call me Nobody, as do all the others who are my companions.”’ (9.366-367).
When Odysseus gets home he is placed with another set of challenges but he still overcomes them. If you look
Throughout the story, Odysseus demonstrates his courage that ultimately allows him to survive. One of these moments was during his journey back to Ithaca, where he faces a race of man eating giants called the Cyclops. Odysseus originally stops his ship there to relish a feast while on his journey back to Ithaca, but while doing so, out of curiosity explores the island. Soon, he finds a deserted house and decides to wait of the owner. The owner was unknowingly one the Cyclops, named Polyphemus.
He has to overcome his foes and his environment. In the cavern with the cyclops, Odysseus must fight to survive. He and his men have to use wit and strategy to escape the cave. After the first attack on his men Odysseus knew he would need to develop a plan to survive. Odysseus and his men are put in danger as they encounter their foe:“Neither reply nor pity came from him, but in one stride he clutched at my companions and caught two in his hands like squirming puppies to beat their brains out, spattering the floor” (Homer 903).
In the story, The Cyclops, he had to either be eaten alive or figure out a way out of the cave. Odysseus and his crew members found a good way out. In the story, The Sirens Scylla and Charybdis, Odysseus needed to make a good decision that best helped him get out of that situation, he either had to choose going through Charybdis, which was a maelstrom, and lose everything including the ship or chose Scylla and lose 6 members of his crew. He chose to go through Scylla. All in all, it can be concluded that Odysseus was the strongest he could be and did everything he could.
During these trials, many burdens were put on Odysseus’ crew, which led to all of his crew eventually all being killed before returning to Ithaca. The 2nd instance where Odysseus made a wrong choice that affected his crew is when he didn’t even really trust his crew. So he stayed up for days straight and
380-381, 384). By revealing his true identity to the Cyclops, Odysseus unknowingly curses himself and his crew for the rest of their journey. The Cyclops is a son of Poseidon and the god performs countless acts which continuously setback Odysseus and his men on their journey home. This is a perfect example of when Odysseus is overcome with fame and can only think for himself.
The Great Wanderings: Scylla and Charybdis In book twelve, after Odysseus is back from the Underworld, Circe provides him with specific instructions on how to make it back home safely. Within her instructions she presents two route options for him. In this journey, Odysseus must decide what passage is right for him and his crew to follow, though their is some consequences behind both routes. He has the choice to either sacrifice six of his men or risk losing his entire ship.
I believe this is a humongous mental challenge for him because he is trying to get home, but the gods and everyone is fighting against him. Another mental challenge Odysseus faces are his ego and anger issues. Odysseus always seems to choose the hard way out of situations, this results
Odysseus, the fabled hero from The Odyssey, and Che Guevara, the renowned revolutionary, both endure the stages of the hero’s journey of Trials, Allies, and Enemies, the Road Back, and the Supreme Ordeal, however Guevara’s journey gave humanity the strength to fight for one’s values, no matter the consequence. Both of the heroes face the stage of the Trials, Allies, and Enemies. Some of the many tests Odysseus faces include Poseidon drowning him, but thankfully Odysseus makes friends with a mermaid, Nausicaa, and King Alcinoos. All of them help to bring him home. To illustrate, Odysseus describes his journey to Scheria to King Alcinoos, “There I was stranded for seven long years.
