What is organic food? When you hear ‘Organic’, you might think of healthy, nutritious food, but that’s not what it means. Organic means how the ingredients were created, prepared or raised. It means that there aren’t any genetically modified ingredients and no chemicals were used to kill bugs or weeds. Organic products also reduce health risks for farm workers and their families by minimizing their exposure to toxic chemicals in the soil, the air they breathe, and the water they drink. Organic foods are also fresher as it does not contain preservatives and waxes that make it last longer. Organic products are also often produced on smaller farms near where they are being sold. Not only is the food fresher, but it is also GMO (Genetically Modified Organisms) free. Organic crops contain no GMOs and organic meat comes from animals is fed with GMO-free or organic feed. Organic practices also protect animal cruelty as they are not given antibiotics, growth hormones, or fed animal by-products. This is beneficial to the consumers as the use of antibiotics in conventional meat creates antibiotic-resistant strains of bacteria, which means that the person will be less responsive to antibiotic treatment, and it also reduces the risk of mad cow disease. Organic farming is also better for the environment as it reduces the pollution in the air, water and soil and water is conserved.
