Representative Kevin McCarthy is one of fifteen Republican members in Congress in the state of California, which is highly outnumbered by thirty-eight democrats. After four years of getting reelected as the representative for the 22nd district in California, redistricting retitled it the 23rd district. The newly numbered district became more compact, losing the central coast while adding a chunk of Tulare County. This did not change the fact that McCarthy’s district was still heavily Republican. The redistricting of 2012 in California showcased a new way to redistrict as the citizens of California chose the district lines, providing one of the most competitive elections in the country. It is when they have opposing views when things get complicated for McCarthy. Many of the constituents in the 23rd district are benefitting from Obamacare because this if the first time they have received health insurance. “It is estimated that nearly 70,000 people in the Central Valley’s Kern County have gotten health care coverage this year because of Obamacare” (). McCarthy has repeatedly voted against Obamacare and does not think that guaranteed medical care is a government responsibility, even though his constituents benefit greatly from this. The major disconnect between McCarthy’s republican views and his constituents’ needs are not taking place just in the Bakersfield district but in many other Republican districts throughout the country. Immigration has been a rough issue for McCarthy as well because 35 percent of the population are Latino in his district. This district relies heavily on immigrants for picking crops and McCarthy has to walk a very fine line with his Republican Party that opposes granting legal status to illegal immigrants while trying to please his constituents. Kevin McCarthy has a dangerous time balancing the role of Majority Leader while keeping the residents of the 23rd district pleased but has been very clever in the way that he gets both done. Unlike Eric Cantor, Kevin McCarthy is one of the most liberal Republicans within their party. It is not just Eric Cantor who has had trouble balancing a Congressional leadership position.
