Same-sex marriage, also known as homosexual marriage or gay marriage, is a legally or socially recognized marriage between two people of the same biological sex or gender identity. In recent decades, same-sex marriage has been being a hot debating topic among many countries. Some countries such as United States, Belgium and Spain, has been given the legal status of same-sex marriage, however, because of the legal problems and social issues, still have many countries refuse homosexual marriage, like Hong Kong. This paper illustrates both arguments for and against, and my standpoint of whether same-sex marriage should be legalized in Hong Kong.

To begin with, those upholders think that equal right can be granted to homosexual couples. People can choose who they love even they are in same gender, and it is a personal preference. Lau (2015) brings out that 2013 has been a breakthrough year for same-sex marriage in the United States since more states legalizing same-sex marriage and two key Supreme Court rulings, US President Barack Obama acclaimed the ruling as a "victory for America", saying: "When all Americans are treated as equal, we are all more free." Equality is also enshrined in Hong Kong 's Basic Law. In accordance with Fitzpatrick (2013), Hong Kong 's constitution is supposed to provide all Hong Kong people with equality before the law and the United Nations human rights committee has required Hong Kong to protect sexual minority groups.
