This society continues to argue the positives and negatives about using as surrogate mother to conceive. The process can be quite complicated and changes depending on the location. There are two different types of surrogate mothers: the traditional surrogates and the gestational surrogates. The traditional surrogate is the baby’s biological mother because her egg is paired the father’s sperm via artificial insemination. Sperm from a random or special selected donor can be used as well. The gestational surrogate uses in vitro fertilization; commonly known as IVF. In this process eggs are gathered from the mother and fertilized with the father’s sperm creating an embryo. The embryo is then placed into the uterus of the surrogate. “ She carries the child for 9 months and after delivering the infant surrenders to the couple” (Landau, 9). The gestational surrogate is called the birth mother but she is not the biological mother. She will not be genetically connected to the baby. Gestational surrogacy is not as difficult of a process in the U.S. as in other countries, since the intended parents are the biological mother. This had made gestational surrogacy more common than traditional ones. Women may consider a surrogate for different reasons. Being able to conceive on their own is not always an option for some mothers, and surrogacy can be a complicated but outstanding alternative.
