Colin Kaepernick, the quarterback of the San-Francisco 49ers, chose not to stand for the National Anthem at a recent National Football League game. Instead, he decided to express his unhappiness with the way African Americans are being treated by police, by kneeling to the ground. This was his form of protest and attempt to convey his message about how he felt. Kaepernick does have the right to not stand for the National Anthem, however, it is disrespectful. People fight for our freedom, so why disrespect those men and women and an NFL game was not the right time or place to hold his protest.

In discussion of country’s ideal, a controversial issue has been if kneeling during the national anthem is disrespectful or not. On the one hand, many argue that they are expressing their first amendment rights. On the other hand, many people believe it’s disrespecting our nation 's ideals and the people who fight for our freedom. My own view is that it is not disrespecting the country’s ideals if the country is not living up to the ideals itself. While people believe kneeling during the National Anthem is disrespecting the country 's ideals, I believe kneeling during the National Anthem is not disrespectful. The United States is not living up to its ideals of freedom, liberty, and justice for all no matter their race. Athletes are bringing awareness by a peaceful protest, which is protected under the first amendment for those who are oppressed.

Deviance can be defined as behavior that violates social expectations and norms. Deviance can be something small like dressing like a hippy or in gothic clothing, or something big like robbing a bank. Each society has laws and rules to keep one from committing deviant acts. Colin Kaepernick is going against NFL policies, going against his duty as an American citizen, and finally, he is disrespecting the men and women who fought and died for this country. I believe Colin Kaepernick is being deviant when kneeling to the flag.

A controversial topic currently circulating throughout the media and society, is professional athletes kneeling during the National Anthem. In my opinion, this is a completely useless, unnecessary action done just for attention.

Kneeling during the national anthem is a form of peacefully protesting instead of choosing to stay silent and not have a voice. Former NFL player Colin Kaepernick who is currently a free agent brought the attention to “kneeling during the national anthem” when he decided to take a knee during a preseason game. Him kneeling brought an uproar of people who believed he was being “disrespectful” and “unpatriotic”, others believed he was being “brave” and a “hero”. Kaepernick had a reason for doing so, he was standing up for social justice and police brutality again African Americans.

Every American child is raised with the knowledge that they were born in a country that by law gives them freedom of self-expression and the right to protest. However, this right does not mean that people must agree with you and in many cases, groups wind up at odds over differing opinions. Over the past few years America has seen many examples of this, most notably football players protesting injustice by kneeling during the anthem. This form of protest has sparked much controversy and has caused more harm than good. The protesters have divided their fans and disrespected the nation.

The current debate over kneeling or sitting in protest during the National anthem ignited by Colin Kaepernick in 2016 has escalated to become a nationally divisive issue. These athletics that chose not to stand for the national anthem because there was a message they wanted to send. Needless to say, an individual has a right to believe as they so choose. Kaepernick along with many others feel that not standing for the national anthem is a peaceful way to protest and release their feelings. People fail to comprehend, the words to the Star Spangled Banner has a meaning, which is

By its very nature hate destroys and tears down.” Dr. Martin Luther King stated that the purpose of non-violent protest was not to get revenge but to change the heart of the enemy. Over the past couple of years America has begun to acknowledge police brutality as a serious problem. While state-sanctioned violence towards individuals of varying races of color is not new, the documentation through dash-cams and civilian cellphone footage has brought the brutality to light. From Ferguson to Tulsa to Baton Rouge, there have been countless cases of police brutality towards African-American men, women, and children. Murderers never receiving their justice, given paid time off and being cleared of charges. Families living in fear, left torn apart at the hands of people who took an oath to serve and protect. We see people of all races standing together in protest of something we know to be wrong, advocating for much needed social change.

“I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color” (Kaepernick, Colin). The flag protest has been a protest existing for a long time but, recently sparked lots of controversy. Although kneeling during the national anthem may seem disrespectful are often seen as a disrespect to the flag and troops, a inefficient way to promote a cause, and anger many people in shows division in the country, it can show that the ideals of freedom is justified, it generates conversation and awareness about topic, and is a legal form of peaceful protest.

Asked to research and observe an example of a fallacy,  I chose a topic that can be argued from both sides also a currently rather popular subject in our nation. Not only is this topic causing a large amount of controversy, it also seems to be bringing out the ignorance in some while others are only  peacefully protesting what is considered important to them. This fallacy being rather NFL players kneeling during the national anthem is disrespectful or not. In my opinion, I suppose this subject commits the fallacy bandwagon fallacy. This fallacy means a concept is considered to be true since plenty of people believe it is true. I consider this topic to commit this fallacy due to the fact that as a country we are taught to rise during the national anthem, the pledge of allegiance and anything signifying

The National Anthem goes on every single time before a game begins. Each time it is being sung everyone usually stands up to show respect for America. While, news said that a few athletic players that have been sitting down, while the National Anthem goes on. This keeps happening more and more slowly because those athletics don’t believe that America lives up to that potential in the song as it once represented. As well as the incidents that happened with the police of excessive force being used against people unassertively. But not a lot of people knew about this until, social media came into play with our society.

Taking a stand is what really counts, standing up for others or even for yourself is more important than winning. You can win at anything but standing up, at least you can say you tried even if you do not succeed. Winning is not everything, you get two minutes of fame and success but then you go straight back to how you were. With taking a stand, you try and do your best and help others even if you do not think you will succeed at least you can say you have tried your best. Taking a stand is more important than winning in any situation that anyone can be in.
