Most cars on the road in the present day have some form of “Anti-lock Brake System” (ABS). The Anti-Lock Brake System is a four-wheel system that prevents wheel lock-up by automatically modulating the brake pressure during an emergency stop.
In most situations drivers who try to avoid a car collision will press the brake pedal all the way down to try and prevent a collision. While this way of trying to avoid a collision can work in some scenarios; in most cases the sudden pressure from braking instantly will lock the wheels. This results in loss of traction, therefore friction between the tyres and road decreases. When a car’s wheels lock up, a larger distance is needed to stop, and the driver has no ability to steer as the tyres cannot grip
