World World Two has a rich history that led up to some of our most advanced technological advantages. We learned a great amount from our mistakes and our victories through that period of time. Many good men were lost on both sides of the war. While the war is classified as one war, it was fought on two sides of the world, The Pacific Theater, and the European Theater. Most people know of the main plan of Overlord, D-Day, but there was much more that went into Operation Overlord. The Allies threw the body of a dead soldier off a submarine so it would wash up on the German occupied coasts. He had fake classified documents on him that made the Germans think the Allies were going to invade somewhere else. According to the Imperial War Museum “The Allies used Dummy Tanks or Inflatable Tanks to trick the Germans into thinking they had more tanks than they did.” (Iwm.org.uk) The inflatable tanks were used to make the Germans think the Allies were going to invade from a different area than where they actually did. They also used Parachuting Dummies to draw German troops away from key positions. Before the combined fleet of British, America, and Canadian forces landed, they sent minesweepers ahead of them to clear a safe path for landing craft. They launched their devastating air raid on Darwin. A port city in the Northern Territory. Japan’s military beliefs were that surrender was beneath contempt. As they started losing the war Japanese pilots started doing Kamikaze flights. Kamikaze started as being a way for the Japanese to take out more ships even if their planes were shot and crashing. Later in the war the Japanese trained pilots, but never taught them to land. They were not going to come back. These Kamikaze pilots were seventeen to twenty two years old, the youngest was sixteen years old. Their jobs were to crash into ships, essentially commiting suicide. The Americans realized that Japan was becoming more desperate. The battleship USS Missouri was a victim of a Kamikaze attack during the Battle of Okinawa. The pilot hit the side of the deck but did little damage other than bend the steel. The pilot was thrown from his plane and died. His body was committed to the sea by the sailors on board under the Japanese flag. One of the men on board was taking pictures during the battle and managed to capture the moment before the Kamikaze hit the ship. The Kamikaze attacks were effective in the fact that they did cause damage to the ships, but it only secured the fact that the Japanese were resorting to last
