Central Christian Academy The World of World War Two Teagan Grosvenor Writing Seminar Mrs. Zuercher May 11, 2023 World War Two was an era of time when there was tension in our world, that built until one day in 1939, when it all exploded. World World Two has a rich history that led up to some of our most advanced technological advantages. We learned a great amount from our mistakes and our victories through that period of time. Many good men were lost on both sides of the war. While the war is classified as one war, it was fought on two sides of the world, The Pacific Theater, and the European Theater. Adolf Hitler, who is known worldwide for starting World War Two, and ordering mass killings of Jews, Gypsies, and Homosexuals, …show more content…
Most people know of the main plan of Overlord, D-Day, but there was much more that went into Operation Overlord. The Allies threw the body of a dead soldier off a submarine so it would wash up on the German occupied coasts. He had fake classified documents on him that made the Germans think the Allies were going to invade somewhere else. According to the Imperial War Museum “The Allies used Dummy Tanks or Inflatable Tanks to trick the Germans into thinking they had more tanks than they did.” (Iwm.org.uk) The inflatable tanks were used to make the Germans think the Allies were going to invade from a different area than where they actually did. They also used Parachuting Dummies to draw German troops away from key positions. Before the combined fleet of British, America, and Canadian forces landed, they sent minesweepers ahead of them to clear a safe path for landing craft. Aircraft dropped strips of metal on the beaches to confuse German radar. This part of the Operation was codenamed …show more content…
They launched their devastating air raid on Darwin. A port city in the Northern Territory. Japan’s military beliefs were that surrender was beneath contempt. As they started losing the war Japanese pilots started doing Kamikaze flights. Kamikaze started as being a way for the Japanese to take out more ships even if their planes were shot and crashing. Later in the war the Japanese trained pilots, but never taught them to land. They were not going to come back. These Kamikaze pilots were seventeen to twenty two years old, the youngest was sixteen years old. Their jobs were to crash into ships, essentially commiting suicide. The Americans realized that Japan was becoming more desperate. The battleship USS Missouri was a victim of a Kamikaze attack during the Battle of Okinawa. The pilot hit the side of the deck but did little damage other than bend the steel. The pilot was thrown from his plane and died. His body was committed to the sea by the sailors on board under the Japanese flag. One of the men on board was taking pictures during the battle and managed to capture the moment before the Kamikaze hit the ship. The Kamikaze attacks were effective in the fact that they did cause damage to the ships, but it only secured the fact that the Japanese were resorting to last
The pilots of these planes were well trained after years of training and countless victories under their belts. So while yes, more planes could be built, they wouldn't have the same caliber of the elite flyers from before. Effectively it ended Japanese offensive power in the Pacific. The war turned from Japan on the offense to Japan on the defense.
Japan planned to invade Midway Island to get a base to attack Hawaii. The Battle of Midway destroyed the naval strength of Japan. The navy of Japan never recovered from its loss at Midway. After this battle Japan was on the defensive. Midway is one of WWII’s most significant
They were going to invade a country taught to die rather than to surrender. The japanese were ruthless fighters and were not scared to die. The Japanese had kamikaze suicide pilots who turned their planes into guided missiles. Truman and Americans new the cost of an invasion would be extremely high. With warning president Truman decided to drop the bomb.
Japan started using Kamikaze attacks on US soil. Kamikaze attacks occur when a pilot crashes into a target on purpose, killing the pilot and damaging or destroying the target. “As the war progressed and it became obvious that American technology was superior to Japanese, the Japanese began utilizing kamikaze pilots to attack allied ships in the pacific to balance the power. The Japanese pilots became guided missiles taking out American ships”(Document 1). Japan was so set on winning that they gave up their lives on purpose to win this war.
Since Japan was a rising power they saw one country in the way from keeping their empire secure, the United States of America. Hence the attacked pearl harbor. Japan did this without thinking about the consequences that would later come. Unfortunately for Japan, the U.S. decided to end the war with two nuclear bombs, little boy, and fat man. These two bombs devastated Japan and caused them to surrender.
Japan need something to distract America from the pacific, to give them time to attack their crucial targets, Pearl Harbour was the perfect plan, wiping out the pacific fleet gave the Japanese the allowance it needed.(Source B). Planning Japan set out for sail on November 26 for their pre-emptive strike, only on the 1st of December and the 7th the fleet commander got his final orders whilst they were in Hawaii. (Source L)The Japanese even had to learn code signals like “TO, TO, TO…” telling them it was time to attack. (Source L).
Introduction: The Second World War, WWII, was a global war as it involved most of the world’s countries, lasting from 1939 to 1945. There are many points of view as to why WWII was fought, but it ultimately goes back to the end of World War I, and the signing of the Treaty of Versailles. Adolf Hitler slowly rebuilt German forces and, driven by his expansionist policy, first invaded Czechoslovakia in March 1939 and then Poland on 1 September 1939 prompting the declaration of War from Britain and France. America managed to stay out of the war, citing neutrality, until 1941.
Secondly, Japanese people were willing to do anything to win the war like kamikaze attacks (Doc. C). “In these kamikaze attacks, more than 3,000 ruthless Japanese pilots were killed, and there were more than 7,000 casualties among American, Australian, and British personnel (OI/http://education.nationalgeographic.org/resource/first-kamikaze-strikes). This quote shows just how much japan was willing to do.
World War II DBQ World War II was one of the most devastating and disastrous time periods in the world. World War II spanned from the years 1939-1945 and approximately 60,000,000 people were killed. (OI) During the war, the Japanese, allied with the Axis Powers, attacked an American harbor in Hawaii.
World War II was a global conflict that lasted from 1939 to 1945 and involved many major countries. The war began with the invasion of Poland by Nazi Germany. It rapidly spread throughout Europe and progressed to outside countries. The thing that most angered Germany and could even be labeled as the origin of World War II was The Treaty of Versailles at the end of World War I. The treaty imposed heavy reparations on Germany, limited its military capacity, and forced it to give up territory to neighboring countries.
These leaders were viewed as war criminals and had to be stopped of their actions. Conventional bombings in Japan took place and killed over 300,000 people. Despite losing a drastic amount of soldiers, this warfare seemed to go on and displayed Japans inability to relinquish. Mass suicidal missions by the Japanese such as, the attacks of Okinawa or Saipan showed no political concerns either. As a result of Japans efforts to show no surrender, they then continued to threaten the lives of Americans and promised to fight with more intensity.
(Doc C) Because of the U.S military presence building in the Pacific, Japan was worried that the U.S could possibly use their forces to attack Japan in order to try to stop them. So, the Japanese believed it needed to cripple the U.S navy early on so they could continue to gain
December 7th, 1941, at 7:48am, the Empire of Japan “deliberately and suddenly” attacked the Navy at Pearl Harbor. The United States of America was at peace with Japan until the horrific event. Eight naval ships were docked at Pearl Harbor filled with many men and women. Four Navy Battleships were damaged while the other four were sunk with hundreds of brave sailors still buried alive and killing over 3,500 sailors overall. This event changed the world.
Japan also attacked the U.S ships in the Pacific Theater using Kamikaze pilots (Doc. C). Japan also showed the U.S they were willing to kill themselves and sacrifice their own people to destroy Americans. The U.S offered an ultimatum but Japan refused it and didn’t accept the terms (Doc. I). In the same way as the ultimatum, there were also many warnings. At the point in the war before the droppings, surrendering was a clear option.
They sent hundreds of fighter planes just before 8 am to Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. Japan managed to cause a ton of damage to America finally forcing us to join the war against Hitler and Japan. “In all, the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor crippled or destroyed nearly 20 American ships and more than 300 airplanes. Dry docks and airfields were likewise destroyed. Most important, 2,403 sailors, soldiers and civilians were killed and about 1,000 people were wounded.”
