The first reason that you should get rid of school sports is the health risks that playing can impose. The rate of concussions for people age 14-19 have tripled in the last decade, rising from 7,000 to 22,000 ER visits per year. A concussion is a serious head injury, a concussion left untreated can lead to brain damage, liver problems, and depression. A concussion leaves a child more susceptible to other injuries and can cost up to $30,000 for 6 months of treatment. Dr. Daniel Gould, director of the Institute for the Study of Youth Sports, in his essay “Are High School Sports Good For Kids?” argues that problems with high school sports are beginning to outway the benefits.. He supports his claim by providing evidence of how sports are beneficial to kids, explaining the problems within sports, and extending the importance of what creates a positive response from sports. Gould’s purpose is to inform coaches, principals, and parents about what makes sports beneficial and how to prevent the problems in order to allow kids to learn and become better citizens. He establishes an informative tone for coaches, principals, and parents.

Dawn Comstock, an investigator at the Center for Injury Research and Policy stated “We have an epidemic of obesity in this country, and sports is one of the ways for kids to incorporate exercise in their lives” (qtd. in Perkel 2) . Most kids don’t get active anymore.
Football is America’s favorite sport. American citizens spend their Sunday nights glued to the television, and Friday nights at the stadium watching athletes tackle, run and catch. Some viewers believe that football is too dangerous and should be eliminated from high school. In the article by Jeffrey Perkel it states, “Researchers found that college football players get injured more often than their high school counterparts but high school athletes are more likely to end up injured.” Youth sports are harmful because they, make the kids so they are most likely to end up in the emergency room, they do not get enough sleep, and the college students get injured easier. Youth sports are helpful because, they help with educational purposes, they have positive effects on adolescents, and they helps associate kids with participation and sportsmanship. However, with all the information I have gathered they say things like, “But better coaching may help.”
There are over 1.3 million athletes throughout the nation that participate in high school football, but less than 10% of those 1.3 million players even get a concussion throughout their high school career (Weber). The main problems that cause high school football injuries is from the improper teaching of technique on how to tackle, block, and even run the ball correctly (Weber). Health and contact sports are something parents worry about as over 500 deaths in the past 3 years from contact sports alone are making parents stand out against these sports and if the government doesn 't do anything about it the number of 7% overall contact sports drop will just keep getting lower and lower each time. Dr. William Speight also had this to say “Many other kids have suffered paralyzing spinal injuries”(Pennington). Kids being paralyzed is the fear for many athletes these days and the number f kids getting paralyzed has increases 2% which is equivalent to about 8,000 kids each year which is crazy to think about kids can 't play sports for the rest of thrie and maybe not be able to live their life because of it so next you hear mom or dad i wanna play sports your answer should be a simple NO. Kids under 10 need to stop playing contact sports because 45% of kids under 10 getting hurt are from contact sports and 5% of the time its ending that kids chances to play sports in the feature, Not to mention contact sports can also make kids go to their fullest and being burned out and although contact provide some kids will useful tools in life most of the time there is more negative than positive. Children have strived for years to make their parents, teachers and coaches proud of them. Kids have come to practice Monday,Tuesday,Wednesday,Thursday, and Friday to get better, while their academics are suffering. Students have pushed their bodies to the limits, causing extreme injury that will hold them back from sports in the future. Student athletes are not getting the opportunity to play multiple sports during the year, because they are expected to spelize in one sport and focus on it year round, leaving no opportunity to play other sports or do other activities. Youth sports are becoming too intense for young children to keep up with.

Schools should not get rid of their sports programs because they help with student’s academics.
Contact sports involve touching, hitting, or banging other children, which is often why children get hurt in these sports. Among teens, concussions and death have happened. While these sports increase the strength of teenagers as they partake in a school activity, the risk of injury and death is great. To most kids and students, competitive sports are a gateway to blow off some steam or to have fun. To parents, the sports that their children play and the lessons that they teach are an important part of their development and life. Despite what many ‘experts’ would like you to believe, both of these statements are completely true. I believe that kids should be allowed to play competitive sports due to the health benefits, the lessons that they can teach, and as a result of the advanced equipment and rules that are focused on making sports safe, as well as the fact that sports can keep kids out of trouble. One extremely important reason that forces me to take the position that kids should be allowed to compete in competitive sports is the health benefits that children who play sports recieve.
