Introduction

With technological developments, people now prefer to meet people online, and that called social network sites (SNSs). SNSs allow individuals to show themselves, illustrate their social network and create connections with each other. There are many sites that contain such concept such as Facebook. In Facebook, users are enabled to present themselves in an online profile, add friends who can post comments on each other’s pages and view each other’s profile. As usual, everything has pros and cons. Returning back to ‘Social Capital concept’, as it declares in the article, Social capital generally refers to the resources gathered thorough the relationships among people. The Internet use is linked both to increase and decrease in social capital. For example, some studies argue that Internet use detracts from face to face time with others, which may reduce an individual’s social capital. There are three forms of social capital as it classifies and measures in the article: bridging, bonding and maintained social capital that will briefly defined as following. “Bridging social capital as researchers called weak ties which loose connections between individuals who may provide useful information but usually not emotional support”. Bonding social capital is typically with close people like: family and close friends. The third form is maintained social capital which means the ability to maintain valuable connections as one progress through life changes. Certain kinds of Facebook use can help students to make and maintain bridging social capital (which dealing with “weak ties”) that seems well-suited to social software applications because it allow users to maintain ties cheaply and easily.
