What as Americans are we proud of? Freedom of speech, the freedom to marry who we chose, the freedom of religion, or the right to vote. To be an American is something that we as individuals, have our own opinions on. Because some of us were raised in the city in a suburb with a picket white fence, and some were raised in the country with big trucks. Were all raised differently and have varied beliefs. In my Opinion to be an American is having pride in your country, knowing your freedoms, and having the courage to be whatever you put your mind. is also being strong enough to stand up for what you believe is right. Others say that it mean you know how to dress up when needed, but you are also not afraid to get down and dirty in the mud. To me, it all depends on your family values that the one that stands in the middle and does not lean left or right, but stays put would be the same thought of individuality and how that is important to all.

In some of the pieces of literature like “I, Too, Sing America,” “America and I,” “The Bill of Rights,” and “Veterans Day: Never Forget Their Duty” the authors have different ideas of what it means to be American. They also express their ideas using different strategies: negation, classification, and function. With these ideas and strategies a more complex definition on what it means to be American was developed. Being an American means being patriotic, having freedoms, and believing in a dream of something amazing. Having patriotism is part of being American.
