For my journal entry I am going to talk about the Pruitt Igoe video on public housing development. The residence that lived in St. Louis Missouri Pritt Igoe where poor and uneducated families that relied on public assistance to get by. The 1949 housing act that the government granted give the people of Pruitt Igoe hope. One theory I see in this film is social disorganization, “which is social change, social conflict, and lack of social consensus as the root of the crime and deviance, is closely associated with the ecological school of criminology” (bookshelf). In this theory you have zone where unique characteristics wherein unique populations and typical from of behavior could be found. For example, Pruitt Igoe would stand in zone two, surrounding
This investigation will focus on the question: ‘To what extent does the movie “Sacco and Vanzetti” (by Giuliano Montaldo, 1971) portray what happened in the trial?’ The investigation focuses on the case of the two men (Nicola Sacco and Bartolomeo Vanzetti) and the events that eventually led to their executions, which took place in 1927. It also looks at the racism towards immigrants in the United States in the 1920s; additionally it will look at the aftermath of the executions. This investigation will also look at how the political beliefs of the two men may have affected the outcome of the trial. To analyze how far the movie represents the events during the trial of Sacco and Vanzetti, I will look at the incidents that take place in the movie, and compare them to the events
Ushpizin is a movie about a married couple, Mali and Moshe, who are struggling financially. Moshe is a rabbi, but after missing several meetings, he was not given the stipend he was expecting, and it seemed as though all hope was lost. The Jewish holiday Sukkot was quickly approaching, and the couple had no money to pay their rent, much less buy anything to prepare for Sukkot. Moshe and Mali prayed for God 's help, and miraculously, their luck turned around. A man anonymously gives them $1000, and a friend gives Moshe a sukkah, a temporary dwelling used during Sukkot to commemorate the 40 years the Jews spent wandering the desert in the Bible.
The modern society allows and encourage people to own their different thinking and ideas and this tendency makes very diverse environment. However, the same characteristics of the environment are still existing and influence people who live in this place in same way. In Malcolm Gladwell’s “The Power of Context: Bernie Goetz and the Ride and Fall of New York City Crime”, discusses about how Bernie Goetz changed his behavior after being assaulted and affected by the situation he lived in while he was robbed, which mainly reflects how environment and dangerous situation changed human beings’ minds and behaviors. The other author Leslie Bell focus on the the different situations for young women and their different reactions in “Sections from Hard
Spatial mismatch is the phenomenon of people, usually black poor people, who are isolated into a neighborhood or ghettos that are far from the jobs and economic growth. There are many implications to spatial mismatch such as the potential workers lack of knowledge about jobs, these people do not have adequate transportation to the job, and there is generally a cost-benefit that discourages many workers from even attempting apply for jobs if they do know about them. When these challenges combine it creates the mass joblessness in ghettoes that lead to crime, drug abuse, and drug dealing. As William Julius Wilson notes, when high levels of joblessness afflict neighborhoods, there exist a lack of social organization or that thing needed to maintain the social order of said neighborhood. Formal and informal controls are all undermined by the lack of economic opportunities, which creates incentives to participate in crime and drug dealing.
Though they are friends, the lives of Pedro Machuca and Gonzalo Infante differ drastically in many aspects including family life, the luxuries they can afford, and the political affiliations chosen by their families. All of which relate to the common everyday life of Chilean citizens during the Allende Presidency, and the Pinochet Dictatorship implemented after the coup d'etat. During this time, the civil unrest never ceased, and life for chileans was generally either good or bad based on social status, income, and party affiliation. Both Machuca and Infante are classic examples of the division inequality of life amongst Chileans, with Machuca being a poor boy who lived in a shanty town, having very little education, and owning very few possessions. Where as Infante is wealthy, has a high end private education, and can afford to buy various luxury items such as brand name shoes and food for his family.
From the documentary, it appeared as if Pruitt-Igoe housed almost exclusively African Americans. It may be possible that racial homogeneity is also a factor of inequality, leading to crime. The second aspect, when crime should be stopped to prevent community deterioration, may be that this theory can only be reversed if the first signs of disorder are stopped. The push back of “unbreakable” objects seemed only to encourage crime in Pruitt-Igoe, so the attempt to stop crime may have come too late. The extent of how far crime may go before it is irreversible should be studied for this theory.
By 859, the Tang Dynasty is before its downfall. The emperor is incompetent and the government corrupted. Uprisings occur throughout the country and many revolutionaries form teams to overthrow the regime. The most powerful among them is a hidden league called "House of the Flying Daggers."
Colour can be an extremely useful tool in film making. Certain hues can make us feel different emotions such as loneliness or remind us of love. Directors use colour to help set a tone, mood and feeling for a scene. Red can portray passion, love, desire and danger Pink is feminine, sweet, innocent or playful Orange is exotic, friendly, warm and optimistic Yellow is naïve, mad obsessive and youthful Green is nature, evil, envious and lush Blue is cold, isolated, calm and cerebral Purple is fantasy, ethereal, mystic and erotic Personal Opinion
Social disorganization theory emerged from the early school of criminology and focused on the characteristics of neighborhoods which indicate a lack of collective efficacy that prevents deviancy and criminal behaviors. These aspects are summarized as poverty, high residential mobility, deteriorating physical conditions, homogeneity of residents and other social ills present. A neighborhood watch group collaborates with a neighborhood in order to organize themselves against aspects of social disorganization (Bennett et al, 2006), by improving neighborhood conditions, running patrols and reporting suspicious behavior to the police. The goal of this polices that, is to create collective efficacy which causes reductions in criminal behavior. The issue with neighborhood watch is that is characterized as a "black-box" where many aspects of multiple criminological theories have been incorporated making it difficult to determine which concepts are effective for reducing crime.
The theory states that when a community has high presence of informal social control the people are more likely to stand up to criminal activities. Furthermore,
A reflection on the movie - Delicatessen, directed by Jean-Pierre Jeunet & Marc Caro This essay is a short critique on the French movie Delicatessen. It will discuss the directors and writers of the movie. It also looks into some of the most memorable scenes of the movie and makes some assumptions of the meaning behind them. After watching the movie “Die Welle”, also known as “ The Wave” in English, which is a German thriller film that talks about a high school teacher who has to teach a class on autocracy, despite being an anarchist. I started questioning myself whether another dictatorship in the Arab world could be possible, such as the ones that were ruled by prominent leaders such as “Saddam Hussein” and “Muammar Gaddafi”. In the movie, the teacher starts an experiment to show how a country’s citizens can be manipulated easily. He uses certain tactics to guide them which results in the construction of a new ideological belief. These tactics he used were very similar to the tactics Hezbollah have been trying to use ever since they were officially established
Zelig (1983), featuring the main protagonist of the same name who can transform to any group he is with, is a mockumentary produced by Woody Allen. According to Stam, a commenter on Woody Allen’s production, describes Zelig as a film in which “artistic discourse is tested in its relationship to social reality” (196), which means that Allen attempts to use Zelig as a challenge to the media representation on what is reality. I would suggest that Zelig’s importance lies on three aspects: The challenge on documentary form, the notion of history as well as the truthfulness of identity. Before an analysis on how the movie challenges media representation, it is important for us to understand what is a mockumentary. Roscoe and Craig in the article

Cinema Novo & Influences of it on this Film When one looks at this films aesthetic, it showcases itself to be heavily influences by other world cinemas. Although this film came some thirty years or so after the end of the cinema novo movement it does draw certain parallels with it. Such as it’s underlying tone for the want of social equality, a strong characteristic of this cinema, it can be seen many times throughout the films entirety. Case in point, when the character of Benny befriends and gives money to the middle class Tiago, to purchase him clothing.
