'If you make listening and observation your occupation you will gain much more than you can by talk.' Psychology has been a part of my life indirectly for many years, from something as an impromptu counseling session for a friend with emotional trauma to self analyzing to just looking and observing people's behavior, I have always been fascinated by people and the way they behave, but it is only as I have grown older and become more aware of psychology that I have begun to question why people are the way they are, why they interact differently with other people and why we all take a different approach to certain situations. I also find it interesting how society, culture and the attitudes and opinions of other people can have such an impact on a person's behavior. During the first couple of years of high school I was somewhat reserved and barely spoke out in class. However by observing the confidence of my friends and class mates I feel that I have sub-consciously applied their methods and learnt to be more confident over time. It also made me observe people around me more closely, made me want to comprehend their mood, expressions, their dynamics with others and what really attracted me to the program was being in a profession that helps people help themselves. …show more content…
It helped me understand the basics, the energy and effort that goes into each session, conduct different psychological tests with the clients under constant supervision of an experienced psychologist. Conducting an elaborate Attachment Theory experiment by Bowlby on a caregiver-child attachment patterns, which was a part of our curriculum further encouraged my interest in child and adolescent
Admission into the University of Florida is a catalyst to achievements and progression of ideas and knowledge and dreams and aspirations. Although it is just a degree that defines what you receive from a college education, it is the individuals you meet and connect with that create the platform of excellence that provides opportunities that contribute to a flourishing adulthood. I hope to solidify connections and experiences that permeate not only in my mind, but in those collages as well. To achieve this goal and reach out to the student community of Gainesville I plan to implement and refine a Senior Freshmen mentoring program, create the largest fundraising event during the Halloween season to help support families of severely mentally disabled
Shanghai is my homeland, which is a worldwide global financial center. Due to its geographical location and historical background, citizens are easily exposed to Western culture. Although all of this information can be seen in books and films, I wanted to explore and experience this first hand. My two passions in life drew me to America.
I strive to be the most well rounded individual I can be. I feel Marquette University has the opportunities for me to achieve those aspirations. Through research and first hand encounters, such as my campus visit which left me highly impressed, I have found that this university has the ability to open many doors for me whether it is my education, faith, commitment to serve, or extracurriculars. First and foremost, Marquette has the capability to set me up and excel in my future career with its high quality education and programs. I plan on majoring in biomedical sciences and minoring in health studies.
Breaking the limits of the human possibilities. Before I stumbled upon psychology in a level , my childhood and teenage years were based around athletics , relationships and aspiring to out do those I felt were within my capabilities to surpassing. I am a very competitive person , since a child , i’ve always found competition in an activity I do whether it's sports , grades , homework or any general lifestyle activities. Before psychology , my biggest dream was to become the fastest man in history and use that success to help people in need as well as find talent within people who didn't think they had it through guidance. The most important thing about competition besides winning was my development as a person to become the greatest I could ever become.
Without the mind, it would not be possible to know how one is feeling, or that blue and orange are the best colors. The mind and its functions are of interest to me, because of this I have decided to pursue a career in psychology. In completing a psychology degree, I will have a better understanding about research and the steps that go into publishing papers. Seeing as I will have better understanding of the research that goes on in the field of psychology, it will be possible to answer my own questions and test other’s work. I hope to have my theories disputed by my colleagues.
Effective interpersonal communication skills are very important in the psychology work field. Psychologists are health-care providers that council and asses in treating mental and emotional disorders.(Mahuron) Communication is one hundred percent key to a psychologist. They communicate with their clients to council them. They must actively listen and comprehend what clients tell them, and be able to speak clearly with clients about sensitive issues.(Mahuron) Being a psychologist, you must create a relationship with your client and build trust.
When you think about it, everything we say, do, and experience boils down to what goes on inside our skulls. To me, this is pretty mind-blowing, and every time I think about it, it renews my excitement for science. I remember when we studied neurology in anatomy and physiology; while I am sure it doesn’t even begin to compare to neuroscience course at Brown, it was my favorite unit. Additionally, while doing a research internship this past summer about psychology, I found myself very interested in the neurobiology of obsessive-compulsive disorder and how involved “hard science” was with a discipline that was once considered a “pseudoscience.” I want to complete a degree in neuroscience, although I have not yet decided whether I want it to be an AB or ScB degree.
Looking back, the journey from freshman to senior year has me feeling sanguine. The impetus of my initial decisions that lead me here feel like distant memories. It raises several questions worthy of circumspect reflection. From my motivations to pick psychology as a major, my initial perceptions of it, and why I stayed in the major just to state a few.
Being a Psychology Major Picking a major is very important, a really tough decision. You’re choosing what you want to do for the rest of your life so no pressure right? Truth be told I did not plan to be a Psychologist when I was a little girl, I did not even apply to colleges under the pretense that I would be a Psychology major. I originally came into college being a Biology major. I wanted to be a Pharmacist for years, but for all the wrong reasons.
For more than twenty years, my mother has been working as a financial accounting expert in Vietnam. Throughout my adolescence, as her position became more and more senior, she had to deal with enormous amount of work that often meant she had to work late into the night. Consequently, I volunteered to be her little assistant in the evening by simply copying data into books as well as rechecking calculations to check for errors. This basic training with my mother was my very first exposure to accounting and finance. As the years rolled on, I learnt a great many more fundamental financial terms, but more importantly, developed a comprehensive understanding of the symmetry of numbers, of what makes accounting and finance a career path I want to follow.
In 2009, my second term at Santa Monica College, I took a political philosophy class that initially sparked my interest in the mind, and further more where certain aspects like morality and ethics came from. As we transitioned from the early Greeks to philosophers like John Locke, my interest in psychology deepened. Though at the time I would go on to pursue my undergraduate degree in Philosophy, I always wanted, and had the intentions of eventually turning my sights onto Psychology as a career. As I began my studies into Philosophy, it became clear that the mind has always held my interest in some way. Philosophy taught me the diversity of thought, the diversity of the understanding of what thoughts and consciousness were, amongst many other subtle introductions into psychology.
I am meticulous. I am conscientious, analytical and exacting. This is how I characterized myself in the introductory paper for my course in theories of personality. The personality inventory included with the assignment diagnosed me with a predilection for empirical data and logical reasoning. It informed me that personality types like mine thrive in occupations that reward organization and accuracy.
I have many academic interests I am excited to pursue at Indiana University in Bloomington. My main goal is to achieve, not only to receive my bachelor’s degree in psychology, but to be accepted into Bloomington’s graduate program for psychology. In my graduate studies, I would pursue my Ph.D. for psychology. I am also planning on accomplishing a double major during my bachelor years. My double major would be in english.
My vision for the contribution I would like to make in the field of psychology and my community is to create a more effective means of assessing current and future employees to unlock their true potential. Assisting in finding a career they can believe in and truly make a difference. In my current position I am lucky to work in the community in which I live as well as a neighboring community. I have the opportunity to use the knowledge gained from my studies at Cappella to make a difference in the lives of people I work with and care about. When I first began this course I knew that a degree in Industrial and Organizational psychology would enhance and add to the knowledge I already had and assist me in providing a better service to my client.
Early in my second year of high school, I discovered that my education is the most important thing in my future. During high school, I learned my capabilities, unique gifts, talents and some of mine include determination and strong will. Which will be used to further my education in the nursing. Child nursing is a very challenging and demanding career, however the rewards would be amazing and I am ready to embark on this career. Nursing has always been a desire of mine to continue after high school.
