Throughout my life I have remained observant of my surroundings, using the information to make sense of the world around me. It’s that quest which leads me to ask the challenging and trying questions that don’t always elicit an obvious answer. The abstract nature of social science appeals to me, but what drives me even more is building the puzzle by finding new pieces of information about the world we live in. So why would a Psychology major want to transition into teaching? Simply said, I magnitude of individual experiences that I have had in undergraduate and in the workplace.
My adult life has consisted of working in social services, an extremely rewarding field that I am truly privileged to be a part of. I have climbed the scale of a direct support professional to a county social worker, and through this process I have gained an abundant amount of self-confidence in myself as a leader and professional. In addition, I believe I bring a unique skill set into the classroom, in particular my skills in redirection and creating engaging activities that I have honed after years of as a direct support staff. Although I am well-versed in some areas, there are many things I am excited to get to learn through the GTL program. As an advocate for furthering education, I want to cultivate students’ critical thinking skills by improving my pedagogical skills and leading engaging discussions. Also, I look to continue incorporating social sciences such as Psychology and Sociology in to the high school setting so students who would like can be exposed earlier
It was under the most delicate of circumstances, when I realized what I was born to do for the rest of my life. It was march 2007, my grandfather was suffering from pneumonia and due to his deteriorating condition he was hospitalized. I had flown in from Toronto to be by his side. Sitting anxiously by his bedside with tears in my eyes wondering if I could do anything to make my grandfather feel better, I watched doctors come and go , updating us on his blood reports, EKGs, chest x-rays, ABGs, and at the same time constantly counseling my concerned family members. As they explained what they were doing to bring my grandfather to the path of recovery, I watched in utter fascination.
I am studying a Psychology degree and this field I have chosen really interests me because I have a passion for helping people. Generally, I am that type of person to put other's happiness and well-being before my own, because it makes me feel like I have a sense of purpose. Also, since I was a little girl I have always been so fascinated with the way people interact, behave, think and feel. I always asked 'why?' and I still do to this very day.
Personal Statement – Harvard University Clinical Psychology PhD Sitting at the dinner table when I was young, listening to my parents rattle off at each other in medical jargon, drove me crazy. Almost everyone in my family is a physician, specializing in various areas.
Throughout my undergraduate career, I have learned more and more about the field of psychology. I have been able to interact with the field from cognitive, clinical, social, biological, and developmental perspectives, and have quickly realized that my passion lies with clinical science. I am especially interested in investigating the effectiveness of various types of psychotherapy, as well as how this varies for different mental illnesses. For example, are some forms of therapy better for depression than for other illnesses? Perhaps there are some therapies that are actually worse for certain illnesses.
At 16 years old, I had no clue as to what career I would be heading into in the future and I was starting to get a bit worried. I was going to enter my junior year of high school and I needed to enter an alternative course on my course selection sheet, in case the AP Psychology would not have any room for me. I randomly selected Marketing Essentials, confidently thinking that I would definitely be in AP Psychology next year. Little did I know, AP Psychology was full of students and I ended up having Marketing Essentials on my schedule, a topic that I had no knowledge of.
I learned how to adapt to the individual needs of students to provide them the best education. Like students with a communication disorder, many of my students would shy away from activities or tasks because of obstacles. Through these experiences, I watched my students gain the confidence to participate in activities and excel in academics to become successful individuals. As a future Speech Language Pathologist, many qualities that I possess can be improved by furthering my education.
During my high school years, I pondered upon what my future held for me. The only thing I knew at the time was I loved science. It was during my junior year that I discovered how much joy my AP Psychology course brought me, particularly the units which covered the brain and how it produced behavior. This set me on my path to pursue my undergraduate degree in neuroscience. When I arrived at Randolph-Macon College as a freshman, I had the opportunity to meet a couple of excellent peers whom I will be forever grateful to.

The more I don’t know, the more I know. The more I realize I don’t understand, the more I discover my desire to know more about psychology. My interest in educational psychology was triggered by my first experience in changing schools.
I am pursing a degree in Elementary Education and Early Childhood Education. I am passionate about education and excited to share the joy of learning with students. The perspective of wonder and sense of excitement that children bring into education motivates me daily. Teaching can leave a lasting impression in a child’s life and offers a special opportunity to shape the bright young minds of future generations. While many professions can be impactful, I believe the qualities of the person in the career position to be the most influential.
In five years, I hope to be in college, studying about something I'm interested in. I want to get into a good college with a great psychology program where I can learn enough about it so I can turn it into a progression. One thing I've noticed is that it's hard to find a hobby which is directly related to psychology, unlike other professions where your hobbies can be very similar to what you would be doing in that job. I believe that given the environment I was born into, where I have had to help many people to get through tough periods in their lives, I could be a good psychologist. This being my reality, I have grown to enjoy listening to people’s problems and difficulties and trying to help them to the best of my abilities.
For as long as I can remember, I have possessed a desire to help people, especially those who are less fortunate than me. This trait along with life experiences are what drew me to want to pursue a career in social work. I want to be available to provide support to people when they have nowhere else to turn. My experiences in social work have taught me to celebrate the small victories just as much as the big.
I decided to make psychology my major during the first semester of my sophomore year. This was after a long struggle with not knowing what to major in, I was undecided all of my freshman year, and after taking the child development psychology class, I decided psychology was something I was strongly interested in. It was interesting to learn how small events in early childhood could impact one’s social and mental capabilities later in life. Thus, I decided that I wanted to pursue this and potentially work with children, either in psychology or whatever I decided I would be interested in during Graduate school. I am hoping that at Duquesne, I can pursue a degree in Psychology and Communications, both being majors that will help me later in life
My interest in psychology began at a young age. I realized my desire to learn more about the wonders of the human mind in my freshmen year of high school. I began to study the way the other students acted towards each other and the ways they reacted in certain situations. I also began studying body language, beginning with the most basic signals, such the signs of lying.
