Psychology Personal Statement

I have always been interested in the field of psychology because I am fascinated by people. Why they do what they do, why they think how they think, why they feel the way they feel. As my studies progressed, I began to narrow my interest and through a series of friends and books, I became really interested in the way humans at this particular moment are striving to develop computer systems that behave, think, and feel the way humans do. For this reason, I am now pursuing a second degree in computer science. Although some do not see a clear connection between psychology and computer science, I have noticed that even the most basic programs require a level of understanding of human cognition.

I want to use my experience and knowledge to encourage and change the obstacles that discourage Latinas to pursue a STEM career. These obstacles, have been implemented throughout the years. For minority women, these unsolicited messages prove to be a greater burden. For example, on a regular basis we Latina and Black women are mistaken for janitors in the companies which we work for. We are strongly constrained by cultural assumptions that we lack the ability to be successful in the field. Constant belligerence creates self-doubt that in the long run prevents us from continuing or pursuing a career in science, technology, engineering, or mathematics. I propose that a solution to this situation can begin once we strongly promote awareness about the long term results of gender and racial stereotyping. This solution in addition to guidance and training on ways to eliminate these stereotypes are needed, especially because our presence in STEM fields are needed for success. When creating the product, it is necessary for the person who will use the product to have a place in the design process. A diverse group of people will have a better understanding of how to create a solution to a problem. It increases innovation and devises a solution that targets a greater
