I have always been interested in the field of psychology because I am fascinated by people. Why they do what they do, why they think how they think, why they feel the way they feel. As my studies progressed, I began to narrow my interest and through a series of friends and books, I became really interested in the way humans at this particular moment are striving to develop computer systems that behave, think, and feel the way humans do. For this reason, I am now pursuing a second degree in computer science. Although some do not see a clear connection between psychology and computer science, I have noticed that even the most basic programs require a level of understanding of human cognition.

I want to use my experience and knowledge to encourage and change the obstacles that discourage Latinas to pursue a STEM career. These obstacles, have been implemented throughout the years. For minority women, these unsolicited messages prove to be a greater burden. For example, on a regular basis we Latina and Black women are mistaken for janitors in the companies which we work for. We are strongly constrained by cultural assumptions that we lack the ability to be successful in the field. Constant belligerence creates self-doubt that in the long run prevents us from continuing or pursuing a career in science, technology, engineering, or mathematics. I propose that a solution to this situation can begin once we strongly promote awareness about the long term results of gender and racial stereotyping. This solution in addition to guidance and training on ways to eliminate these stereotypes are needed, especially because our presence in STEM fields are needed for success. When creating the product, it is necessary for the person who will use the product to have a place in the design process. A diverse group of people will have a better understanding of how to create a solution to a problem. It increases innovation and devises a solution that targets a greater
Summary Freeman Hrabowski talks about how to improve the shortcomings of university attendees, especially those who are minorities and majored in science and engineering. According to him, we must first set high expectations which will drive students. It is all about having a thorough understanding, and not just enough to barely make it through. He states that secondly, a community has to be built among students by working in groups in order to support, understand and trust one another, as well as helping each other succeed. Hrabowski then explains how it takes researchers to produce researchers meaning, we have to expose the upcoming generations to the many exciting fields available to keep the fields and their enthusiasm alive.

It was under the most delicate of circumstances, when I realized what I was born to do for the rest of my life. It was march 2007, my grandfather was suffering from pneumonia and due to his deteriorating condition he was hospitalized. I had flown in from Toronto to be by his side. Sitting anxiously by his bedside with tears in my eyes wondering if I could do anything to make my grandfather feel better, I watched doctors come and go , updating us on his blood reports, EKGs, chest x-rays, ABGs, and at the same time constantly counseling my concerned family members. As they explained what they were doing to bring my grandfather to the path of recovery, I watched in utter fascination.

A diversification in STEM needs to happen. The more variant the minds of tomorrow 's scientists are, the more potential there is for new innovations and inventions. Yet today Hispanic students (as well as other minorities) continue to be underrepresented in the STEM disciplines (Hoekenga, 2012). In the face of these disparities Hispanic scientists have had a major and lasting impact on the world around them. In many cases they overcame obstacles, including racism and sexism, poverty, cultural and family expectations, and lack of mathematics background, in order to work and excel in the fields that they love.
Dreams That Can Be Accomplished African American history is filled with a plethora of contributions in the music, acting, and sport industries, but some young adults fail to recognize the African American contributions to the science field. For decades, minority women have been the most underrepresented individuals in science, engineering, and medicine. Being one of less than 100 African American women physicists in the United States, Dr. Hadiyah-Nicole Green has been an inspiration to me to pursue a degree in Chemistry. She once said, “It’s important to know that our brains are capable of more.” It is important for African American women to further their skills and know that they are a valuable part of the workplace and that their contributions to STEM is essential.
STEM disciplines require an immense amount of work and effort to succeed for most students. From my personal experience, on average, as an undergraduate student pursuing a Mathematics degree, I have taken four, five unit courses in my field per semester. Often I was overwhelmed by how many different concepts I had to learn simultaneously and became concerned that I would accidentally apply wrong formulas or techniques in my varying courses. The more I don’t know, the more I know. The more I realize I don’t understand, the more I discover my desire to know more about psychology. My interest in educational psychology was triggered by my first experience in changing schools.
In five years, I hope to be in college, studying about something I'm interested in. I want to get into a good college with a great psychology program where I can learn enough about it so I can turn it into a progression. One thing I've noticed is that it's hard to find a hobby which is directly related to psychology, unlike other professions where your hobbies can be very similar to what you would be doing in that job. I believe that given the environment I was born into, where I have had to help many people to get through tough periods in their lives, I could be a good psychologist. This being my reality, I have grown to enjoy listening to people’s problems and difficulties and trying to help them to the best of my abilities.
When she was studying in a rural public school, her principal expressed, “girls never go on in science and math.” This shows the biased role models in American K-12 schools. Teachers cannot foster the initiative of learning about science if they continue the stereotype threat. The negative stereotypes transmitted from schoolteachers affect girls’ science attitudes and eventually undermine their academic performance and interest in science. Female students are afraid of selecting a STEM major as their future career, because their science teachers indicate that they cannot get the same successful academic achievement in this field as men
Moreover, according to the report presented by the US Department of Commerce, more than 50% of the total jobs in the country is taken by females. However, only 25% of them is in the fields of science, technology, engineering and math (Stem), regardless of the 33% more value in the average salary of other industries (Knight, 2011). Reports also show that on average, men get higher salaries than women. Work expectations among men is also higher as compared to women (Hays & Farhar, 2000, p. 20). The report also indicates that for all those students who have graduated Stem, less women will pursue and advance in jobs in related fields.
