In conclusion, Margaret Mead has a very clear and correct understanding of success.Taking our eyes off of those who are on national television and rather focusing on those around us will be the best type of success. Those prominent figures in the media are important, however, but we need to remember that their success is almost on an entirely different scale. One cannot jump from poverty to prosperity in a matter of days, it is a constant mode of self-improvement that will eventually amount to something. And this is the American way! Current republican presidential candidates currently display this idea, those being Ted Cruz and Ben Carson, because each of them understood the idea of success and utilized it in the best way to improve themselves for the betterment of all.
Utilitarianism promotes happiness, happiness exclude pain, suffering, struggles, stress, and anything that makes one ‘unhappy’ or ‘sad’. When discord occurs in The Silmarillion, it is said to prove still the world more beautiful and to create an even more phenomenal world than the one in existence. “...no theme may be played that hath not its uttermost source in me, nor can any alter the music in my despite. For he that attempteth this shall prove but mine instrument in the devising of things more wonderful…”(The Silmarillion 17). It is said to create this beautiful world because even the discord was part of the plan in making the world wonderful. Essentially, if a change is to be made, either intended or unintended, it can not alter the grand scheme of events because these are predisposed in the divine world.
The major theory of ethics that this argument relies on is Utilitarianism. Utilitarianism (U) is characterised by carrying out an action to produce the greatest amount of good (or “utility”) for the greatest number of people, regardless of whether or not the action is right or wrong. The word “good” is defined as a sense of satisfaction, gain or welfare – according to the Oxford Dictionary and Thesaurus. Alternatively, the theory focuses on reducing the total amount of harm imposed on the greatest number of people. Viewing this theory from either perspective will generate an overall positive outcome.
The universal energies are shifting toward the encouragement to speak truthfully. Oprah stated in her Golden Globe speech, “What I know for sure is that speaking your truth is the most powerful tool we all have.” This is not giving people a license to be unnecessarily cruel. Speaking your truth is NOT saying whatever comes to your mind that may be hurtful or is coming from a place of anger. Speaking your truth comes from a place of love and kindness. I truly believe that we are all good and have kindness to share with the world around us.
I would have to say that I agree most with relativism and how it is explained. I agree with the idea that there is no global idea of right and wrong, or the ideas of values tend to differ from one culture to the next. The reason as to why I chose this theory compared to egoism and utilitarianism is because of how each of their main points had been given. With egoism it revolves around being a completely selfish being in order to fulfill a well being and utilitarianism revolves around the idea of complete equality of happiness which is not a bad thought although it is far
