Fuller encouraged women to go against the grain and educate themselves. She told women to disregard society and learn to be an independent person. In these aspects she shows a few of Emerson’s main ideas. Fuller is different in her thought process though, because she is mainly talking to women in her essay.
The need for a suitable role model as a child developed is key to helping them find themselves. Ideas revolving around this statement are explored in Sandra Cisneros's novella, The House on Mango Street. Cisneros writes through thirteen-year-old Esperanza, as she describes herself trying to discover who she truly is and what she wants to be like in different females. The novella tells about these experiences, and the poverty filled world around Esperanza. Esperanza views female role models in her life with question and curiosity.
Personal attack shows an attack on the character of a person rather than his or her opinions or arguments. Ms. Campbell is the head of a department who also a teacher. She was totally looked down on the student in class 203 because many of them are on probation, can’t be relied on and are the lost cause’s. For example, when Mrs. Gruwell finds out a new book to let the student read but Ms. Campbell is not giving it to the student. Ms. Campbell thinks that the student reading scores are not so good and believe the book will be damaged by them.
She uses sarcasm as a way to process uncomfortable situations and does so in a self-destructing manner. She lost a part of herself in the process, the most important part to deal with her post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD): verbal communication. For people she interacts with or lacks of interaction with it seems like she is purposely deciding not to talk. As if it was her choice. But there is more to it.
Overhearing Joanie expressing to Isadora that she could not help but be in the manner she treats me, soon after being told she will no longer be allowed to continue with her hostile behaviors, drove me to seek higher aid in resolving this matter, if it be with a change in behavior for me or for the others. These matters can easily turn into legal issues if not handled properly. I would love to have this corrected in-house before another reoccurrence, which would force me to seek professional advice on my next plan of action. Joanie 's statement " I can 't help it" informs me that the hostile behavior towards me is not of my doing. with that being said, I believe its time to start approaching each other in a respectfully and mature manner.
The theme of “Choices” by Nikki Giovanni is that she has to make do with what she’s got. For example, in the poem, it states,” since i can’t go where i need to go then i must go where the signs point,”(Page 195). This connects to our theme because she has tried to do what she wants, but each time, she gets drawn back so she tries to make do with what she has. Another example would be when the poem says,” when i can’t express what i really feel i practice feeling what i can express,”(Page 195). This is relevant to the theme because she is not allowed to express her real feelings so she tries to express the ounces of happiness she has.
I wished I could regain the confidence I had before moving to the U.S. The book’s key takeaway is that lack of confidence leads to inaction, and actions are necessary to build confidence. I agree that most women, including me, think a lot about consequences and often have self-doubt. This can ultimately inhibit women from seeking opportunities and affect their decision-making ability. I agree that confidence is related to upbringing, and how one is being nurtured.
For this evaluation I'm going to talk about Kelly Sue DeConnick's 99U talk: How To Make People Uncomfortable (And Still Make a Living.) In her talk DeConnick found that the best way to lead, inspire and bring people together was by making them uncomfortable. So in her talk she shares her “Five Steps to Becoming a Professional Discomfort Provider.” From the beginning DeConnick introduces herself and her career as a comic book writer. She goes a little into the history of comic books, graphic novels and the difference between the superhero genre and the comic book medium.
