Public policy is the single most important element in driving the course of nation 's future. It is therefore good to understand the role of politicians, bureaucrats as well as citizens to get it right. As a political strategist while I work with politicians and candidates to devise winning strategies, an understanding of public policy, role of politicians and citizens should support my endeavor to strengthen constructive democracy. I am not looking at this course from the point of view of a certified course but more to widen my horizons in this space, more as an opportunity to interact with the interesting people who enroll in this course and build connects with the faculty and draw on their knowledge and experience. Policy is an effective and a highly valued mechanism, significant for the Government and its citizens as well. For the former, it essentially formalizes the intentions and the road-map that the Government aims to take. It is a set of guidelines that direct the Government on taking important decisions and their implementation. Public policy holds a more important place for Governments, because it caters to vital matters which have a huge impact on the citizens, including among others: health, education and security. Considering that public policy has a direct impact on people, it is seen that Governments are often critiqued and evaluated on how well they fare against their policies. Lastly, public policy is also an important framework which guides as well as empowers local governments such as Panchayats and Municipal Corporations. On the other hand, policy is an indispensable tool for the citizens who are being governed. In essence, public policy shows the citizens what the Government’s short term and long term plans are. Public policy provides a know-how of the activities and decisions being taken by the Government, to the citizens and therefore giving them something to critique and compare different Governments. After college, I intended to change my stream and actively work towards a Master’s degree in social science. However, I was hindered by the lack of relevant educational background as well as my lack of work experience. I want to do the Graduate Certificate in Public Policy to primarily bridge this gap. A certificate of recognition from a reputed institute will go a long way in giving me the basic foundational knowledge about Public Policy that I seek. It will also, I hope, open up job avenues in the social sector, where I intend to move in a year’s time. Finally, armed with the GCPP and a few years’ work experience, I hope to be ready for a thorough MPP
