Since I was a child, everything I wrote was done using a free-writing technique. Quite a few of my teachers have told me, and occasionally forced me, to use brainstorming, prewriting, and other systems to help my writing, but I do not believe that I write effectively using those methods. Whenever I brainstorm, I end up just writing complete sentences that would be better off in the essay to begin with. This often leads to just duplicating what I have in the brainstorm right into the essay, adding an unnecessary step that just slows down my writing. He describes the books at their house by saying, “They were stacked in crazy piles in the bathroom, bedroom, and living room” (215). Which details how he learned to read despite having limited resources but only books that helped him to mature and be concerned to help others with his knowledge to be as great as him. Sherman Alexie knew he was different and that is why he never gave up even though he was viewed as an oddity. Knowing this stereotype motivated Alexie to become an exception to this rule. When he was adult he tries to make other students believe that they can make a difference by reading and opening their minds to the world.
His family was in need by normal standards, but overall he came from a middle class background. The main plot of his essay was that Alexie was different than his fellow other Native Americans due to the fact that he learned how to read and could read very challenging works, such as the Grapes of Wrath at a young age. Has he gets older, Alexie values education and knowledge and does not let preconceived ideas of the stereotypical concepts of how Natives Americans “are” let them get in his way. In this essay Alexie juxtaposes himself in his own essay to demonstrate how he broke the stereotypes against him. However, Sherman is trying to demonstrate to his audience (upper-middle class who now “values diversity”) who are the people who were types to probably doubt him.
Reuven notices that Danny is very different from whom he had expected him to be. As the son of Reb Saunders, Danny shows many signs of having an intellectual passion, however he admits that studying just the Talmud is not enough and that his school life is quite boring. He feels that the teachers are too afraid of his father to challenge him, thus, he reads many books as a replacement for experiencing the challenges and excitement that he could never achieve at school. Rather than judging Danny by his appearance or position, Reuven uses this opportunity to actually listen to him, as a result, he was able to learn many things about his new friend. “I succeeded in learning to read and write,” said Frederick Douglass, whom struggled to achieve his goal in learning to read and write. “I never realized so many words existed,” said Malcolm X whom learned to read and write under some difficult circumstances. Evidently, Douglass and X have both experienced some interesting challenges to succeed in the English language. Without a doubt, currently today education is difficult, although not in the same way as Douglass and X experienced it, but some individuals do not have the proper education due to the lack of resources, or due to a learning disability. Unquestionably, Douglass and X have many interesting similarities and differences.
Through trial and error, college students are having to figure out what constitutes as acceptable writing for every one of their separate classes all on their own without their ethnic backgrounds taken into consideration. While although Dave was considered privileged because of his years of experience in classrooms that consisted of teachers and students who shared similar social backgrounds, “students from diverse communities may need… teachers in the disciplines… [to] provide them with assignments and instructional support appropriate for first steps in using the language of their community” (262) McCarthy’s findings contribute to the notion, “learning to write… is not only a developmental process that occurs within an individual student, but also as a social process, that occurs in response to particular situations” (236). Although McCarthy only documents Dave as he takes this “journey across the curriculum”, her study is addressing the college student body as a whole. She declares that the success of a student is determined not only by their intelligence, but also their ability to adapt to a wide range of social and academic settings without any negative interference towards their
Looking Back Looking back through my papers that I have written for Dual Comp. English III, I realized that I struggled greatly with the use of transition words. I had always used the same few in my papers for other classes and did not understand their importance. I learned that transition words can make a paper really good if used correctly, or really bad if they are non-existent. While writing for Dual Comp.
When it comes to improving these skills, I believe that the only way to do that is to practice and work on incorporating those skills into each essay. I will not become comfortable with those skills unless I force myself to use them. I also found myself struggling to meet the word count requirement, I would easily be able to write a good portion of my essay, but I struggled to stretch and add to my ideas to reach the length requirement. In order to improve this, I need to further develop and elaborate on my ideas in each essay. Prior to AP Language I really enjoyed writing, but during that class my love and ease of writing went away and I often found it to be dull and like a chore.
Looking back through my days of writing in high school there was a lot I did not understand about the writing process. My writing was much unstructured and overall very poor compared to what it is today after this class. I believe that I have always been a good writer I just have not had the tools and knowledge to create a well written and knowledgeable paper. This course has helped me to meet the learning outcomes of learning to conduct factual research, making original and unbiased papers, writing different genres of papers in a professional way, correctly implementing the academic writing process, learning proper grammar and mechanics, and implementing critical thinking skills into my drafts. I helped out with students during their lessons. I was able to work with the same student for several weeks, and I looked forward to seeing their improvements each week. It was such an eye-opening experience for me to see just how much the riding affected the students and helped with their conditions. During my time as a volunteer, I gained a lot of knowledge on the effects of therapeutic riding and how beneficial it can be to the disabled. There is an article that helped me learn to truly revise my essays, the title is, “Revision Strategies of Student Writers”, it is by Nancy Sommers. It is about different strategies students can use to revise their paper. She stated in her paper that for many students the idea of revision makes them uncomfortable and can lead to them not spending very much time working on it. Corcoran was able to keep his grades up by making friends to do his work. He got a job as a teacher and was able to teach his students while he hid not being able to read. However, this is incorrect. It is still more a drawback to mask someone’s identity. Even though he got through his school years, he struggled a lot and had to break many rules to get through college.
