Community service or volunteering hours is a need for every high school student to be eligible to attend college. It is an opportunity that is given to change people 's lives, including yours. Volunteering is like a win-win situation where you feel good to achieve more knowledge and others feel good because they are getting helped. Although it may be considered unpaid work volunteering can also be a great way to explore, or gain experience for your new job or career especially for me since I want to be a doctor. People need attention elders for example, do not get that many visitors at care centers.
I have frequently tried to impact the lives of others through service, and found that each attempt has also had a profound impact on my own life. This phenomenon is especially true about my Congressional internship with the Hon. Nancy Pelosi, Democratic Leader of the House of Representatives. Working for Leader Pelosi, I learned that service is about the people who are served, and not just about abstract ideas. I learned to serve others best, not by acting as their savior, but rather as their partner- a partner that empowers them to live better lives.
Becoming an Upstander In a study by the University of California Berkeley, when there are four or more people who are witnesses in an emergency, the likelihood that at least one of them will help is only 31%. The remaining 69% of witnesses who are present but do not take part, are called bystanders, but if these bystanders become upstanders, they would become part of a solution to a problem. To become an upstander, a person should take responsibility by educating themselves about bystander apathy, learning how to overcome it, and be willing to help others. Articles written by Tara McCartney and Bryona Golding demonstrate the importance of comprehending the responsibility of becoming an upstander.
Community service does not only have a profound impact on our community, but the impact it has on the individual people is even greater. The concept of community service has always been something that I grew up with, and now that I am older I better understand how important community service is for society. I have participated in community service activities. Starting in elementary school, I helped feed the homeless and rescue animals. Even with my wide range of volunteer experience, it was difficult to find an activity that would be meaningful and fulfill my thirty-hour obligation for my senior project.
Not to take away from that football player 's accomplishments in any way—I 'm a great admirer of excellence in any form—but I found nothing about him even remotely heroic. I wondered if he was ever introduced to my patient if he wouldn 't find the label a bit embarrassing himself. What actually makes a hero? I 'd argue it 's the willingness to make a personal sacrifice for the benefit of others. If you don 't find yourself having to resist a voice inside your head urging you to save yourself instead of whatever action you 're contemplating, my heart, at least, will refuse to recognize your actions—however legitimately compassionate or courageous they may be—as heroic.
Volunteering has a lasting effect on the community due to the hard work and effort the volunteers put into to completing the task at hand. Howell’s article explains, “Whether it’s the money communities save by the hours volunteers dedicate, the partnerships that bring organizations together, or the much-needed services volunteers provide, community service projects have a measurable impact”. This quote stats that anyone can serve their community anyway a person see fit. Many homes and people’s lives have been effected by natural disasters. The destruction from natural disasters is one of the leading causes for people to help rebuild and help one another out of the goodness of their heart.
You would n ever know by looking at me or talking to me that my family and I have been homeless before. For the kids that have been homeless before it doesn't make you any less worthy, or intelligent than anyone else. There are many things you can do not only to help yourself with the feelings of being embarrassed or ashamed but you can also help others like you, be apart of organizations, and volunteer your time to others that have been in our situation of being homeless so they can feel better and know it ’s okay.
Community service is an inspiring way for students to interact with their community, which develops lifelong social skills. It also builds many strong relationships with the public that leads to different connections with other people. Volunteering helps students find their passions and interests that may lead to a career choice they may have not considered. There are numerous self benefits to performing community service, however you could also assist others through volunteering. If I could do any community service activity to meet my graduation requirements, I would choose to assist others at a sports camp because it’s something I am abundantly passionate about, I would be able to help kids develop their skills, and I could learn a lot of different things from it as well.
I just got back from the Coming Home Retreat in the Sacred Heart Novitiate, and I had three extremely significant experiences. Magpahanap ka. One thing that Sir Bobby Guev pointed out was that we are always trying to look for God. We always try to seek God so we can better love Him. We always try to search in the deepest parts of our hearts to look for Him.
During my entire school year starting from freshman year and ending it now at senior year; I have always enjoyed helping others. When I volunteer, I go out my way to help out others who are involved in organization or even the ones who are doing everyday things. Many of my friends may see it as uncool or wack, but I see it as building character and work ethic up. If there is a person in need of assistance with their groceries, cleaning, crossing the street, or more; I will be their to help that person out. This will help me out in the long run with college and everyday life.
