The Puente Movement and Larkin & Lacey Frontera Fund Civil and Migrant Rights Crusades
Arizona is home to many civil, human and migrant rights groups and advocates. The Phoenix based Puente Movement is one such organization. The movement advocates for migrant justice by empowering and educating communities to enable them defend their families and enhance their quality of life. The organization’s operating framework is built on the foundation of “Closed Fist, Open Hand strategy”. The Closed Fist strategy infers to fighting enforcement actions that criminalize people, though racial profiling, detention, Police-ICE collaboration and deportation. The Open Hand strategy, on the other hand, involves creating an all inclusive community and combating attrition policies skewed to make the lives of immigrants unbearable.
The programs being undertaken by the Puente migrant justice organization at the grassroots level currently includes; Community Defense Courses, Underground Library and Puente a la Salud, which encourages community leaders to promote holistic health

The journalists received a settlement of $3.75 million after their unlawful arrest by Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio on October 18, 2007. They were accused of writing about a secretive grand jury that sought reporter’s notes covering the Sheriff. Their website continually highlights news about migrants along with local and national policies and laws with repercussions to civil, human and migrant rights in Arizona and throughout the US. Latino Families in Therapy Second Edition was published in 2014. Celia Jeas Falicov who is a clinical psychologist, author and currently teaching at the University of California in San Diego wrote the book. As the main contributor of the book Celia’s goal is to help others understand the importance of being competent when working with Latino Families and acknowledging that because the families come from a different background than those giving the interventions we must find therapeutic approaches that will benefit the Latino community. Falicov gives great insight to the different Latino communities that we could encounter and successful evidence based practices that can be used such as a meeting place for culture and therapy (MECA).
1. First important point is that author is describing the Mexican-American movement (La Raza Unida). He is also discussing the purpose of development of this movement. According to author; La Raza Unida is a conglomeration of gatherings is the southwest United States. Author is clearly supporting this movement in positive way and creating a positive image of this movement is also the author’s objective.
In effect of African-Americans fighting for their civil rights, Mexican-Americans formed La Raza Unida when they saw that, “even the most disillusioned Mexican-American begin to dream large dreams again” (372). The civil rights movement for African-Americans helped opened the eyes of Mexican-Americans, and they soon realized that there was a disadvantaged minority. At this time period, they faced “the same level economically, but substantially below educationally” compared to African-Americans (372). “Mexican-Americans is not too much better off than the Negro” (372). After world war two, many Mexican-Americans wanted to be acknowledged for their sacrifice for serving their country.
Cesar Chavez, born March, 31, 1927 near Yuma, Arizona, was a civil rights activist who fought for rights of farmers. He was the founder of National Farmers Association, which later became the United Farm Workers. He used nonviolence to fight for the union’s agenda. Chavez was a prominent labor leader throughout his life. He died for April 23, 1993 near San Luis, Arizona (Biography.com)
In “Intersectional Resistance and Law Reform,” Dean Spade proposes that the United States was founded through “racialization…(which) continues to operate under new guises… that produce, manage, and deploy gender categories and sexuality and family norms” (16). More over, these laws and norms tend to maintain the “status quo,” and employ an inherently flawed justice system that is only equipped to address single-axis discrimination issues (5). Thus, the intersectionality movement is largely dismissed by the social and justice systems, as it utilizes “critical intersectional tools… that are often (too) difficult for legal scholars to comprehend” (17). Interstionality’s progress is also impeded by advocates leaving to support single-axis issues. However, Spade warns that this approach is ineffective, as it fails to protect the most marginalized members of society.
According to Hernandez, “ Mexicans in the borderlands, regardless of immigration of citizenship status, were subject to high levels of suspicion, surveillance, and state violence as border patrol officers aggressively policed not only the U.S and Mexico border but also Mexican communities and work sites” (Hernandez Pg. 2). Dorothea Puente appeared to be the sweet old lady that couldn’t hurt a fly, but you can’t judge a book by its cover. When you open Puente’s story, you’ll find a long history of lies, manipulation, and crime. This criminal behavior all began with her troubled childhood. Born January 9, 1929 in Redlands, California, she was originally Dorothea Helen Gray. She was abused by both of her parents who died before she even turned sixteen.
The legend of the Virgen de Guadalupe has become a common symbol of hope to many incoming immigrants of Latin American countries. Due to U.S. governmental and economic interventions in Latin American countries, it has caused many people to migrate as refuges and flee unstable environments. These mass migrations have been followed by torturous trails and stories that many times end in death or abuse, however, other times it has allowed refugees to move away and live stable lives in the U.S. However, once in the U.S., these immigrants are faced with discriminatory policy based on false accusations that makes their lives unsafe and unprotected. Therefore, Latinx religious faith becomes a strong component of community for these groups.
In this essay, I will argue how the Chicanos in the U.S. have responded to the lack of inclusion in history, opportunities, to racism and violence because through time we have seen how the Chicanos have been part of the country history and what it came to be, but we have been left out of history. The Chicano helped build what the united states came to be, we are part of its culture since the treaty of Guadalupe was signed, but our path has not been easy, many have been victims of oppression, poor working conditions, lack of civil rights and segregation. Unity for Chicanos came in the form of an idea, of a dream, called El Plan Espiritual de Aztlán (The Spiritual Plan of Aztlán). ‘Plan of Aztlán’ became one the Chicanos signature ideas, this ‘Plan’ “sought to connect Chicanos to their indigenous past while… reminding them of the colonial implications of the Mexican-American war.” The ‘Plan’ become a method through which Mexican-Americans could be united through their shared ancestry and culture. Cesar Chavez History Day Project One Mexican American farm worker dedicated his days to better the lives of his people, his name was Cesar Chavez. Horrendous treatment of farmworkers caused Chavez to take a stand for what he believed in, for no one should be treated poorly because of race or social class. During Chavez’s life, he organized peaceful protests, boycotts, as well as participated in a historic 36 day "Fast for life". Chavez not only changed the working rights for farm workers but subsequently gave dignity to the working class of America. The legacy that Cesar Chavez left behind was that he became the most important leader of the Latino people in the United States, and he founded the still standing United Farmworkers of America.
In her book, From Out of the Shadows, Viki L. Ruiz argues the contributions to history that was made by farm workers, activists, leaders, volunteers, feminists, flappers, and Mexican women. She explores the lives of the innovative and brave immigrant women, their goals and choices they make, and how they helped develop the Latino American community. While their stories were kept in the shadows, Ruiz used documented investigations and interviews to expose the accounts of these ‘invisible’ women, the communities they created, and the struggles they faced in hostile environments. The narrative and heartfelt approach used by Ruiz give the reader the evidence to understand as well as the details to identify or empathize with.
With the current election raging, illegal immigration has been the hot topic amongst both liberals and conservatives. Many conservatives believe that illegals steal jobs, abuse tax benefits, and, most importantly, threaten their way of life. Liberals, on the other hand, support immigration reform based purely on sympathy. They understand that many Latin Americans go through extreme measures to escape hopeless situations back home. While there’s nothing wrong with sympathy for our fellow humans, it may serve to be beneficial to look at immigration reform through the lens of reason.
During the Chicano Nationalist Movement, a well-known speaker, Rodolfo ‘Corky’ Gonzales, delivered a speech titled Chicano Nationalism: Victory for La Raza. In this speech, Rodolfo Gonzales tries to unify the Latin American people within the United States by using the idea of a family and to create a new political organization for the Chicano people. This speech was a cumulation of various ideas which stemmed from his own life, the experiences of the Chicano people, and the Chicano Nationalist Movement in general. Each of these factors contributed to the context of the speech and how the ideas within the speech are presented by Rodolfo Gonzales. Rodolfo ‘Corky’ Gonzales was born to Federico and Indalesia Gonzales, two Mexican immigrants, on June 18, 1928.
