Films have been a mode of expression since its creation in the 1890s. Some movies definitely have deeper meanings than others, such as Pulp Fiction compared to This Is The End. Despite the seriousness of the subject matter, movies are a form of expression for everyone involved: the writers, directors, producers, actors, and even the viewers. When someone writes anything, it is a reflection on something that they have been thinking about and they feel as though they need to share it. Many movies are created to comment on societal issues, such as Moonlight, Get Out, and many more. Many movies are created to comment on societal issues, such as Moonlight, Get Out, and many more. Gattaca reveals the extremities that can result from the never-ending development of technology and how that could affect our society’s structure. It gives the viewers insight into a dangerous world which we could unfortunately be moving towards. Although there are usually deeper themes being explored in movies, it is still entertainment and the people involved want it to make money. By including entertaining elements, such as the romantic relationship between Vincent and Irene in Gattaca, the true message of the movie is not very explicit. Dramatic subplots are essential to a financially successful movie, though, which is unfortunate because viewers can easily become distracted by the trivial details and completely disregard the important message the movie is trying to make. Although it does include the expected drama, Gattaca manages to accurately display the overall intention of the film: to …show more content…
The technology that is used in the film to genetically modify embryos and to identify people is currently not yet a reality, but it is being developed through science like CRISPR. This film is meant to reflect a possible reality for us in the future and how it would affect everyone. By creating a society that values genetically superior people over those who were naturally born, huge amounts of pressure are put on both naturally born children and children who are genetically superior. The genetically superior children have to live up to high expectations, while the naturally born have very low expectations for them. They are limited in the amount of jobs they do, despite the fact that people like Vincent are completely capable of doing the same job as someone whose genetics are more pristine. Since this technology is not too far away, this film acts as a warning for the extremities that technology can cause, and it encourages the audience to consider the current discriminations we face today. People are discriminated against today because of their race, gender, socioeconomic class, ethnicity, and sexual identity. This movie shows how we as people continue to determine others’ success based upon things that make them different, or things that do not make them perfect, and I
In today’s world, you can have your baby with blue eyes, perfect height, and how you want your baby to look when is old. Now we can even make a baby be born smart because now scientists are more specialized in genetic and how the genes work. For example, if women can’t have babies she can rent a belly from another woman so she can have the baby but the baby is going to have the DNA of the women who can’t have babies, not of the other woman. Is pretty impressive how today scientist can modify genetically the genes of babies before they are even born. Now in today’s world is almost possible to create the perfect baby if we want.
The film touches the controversy of teenage pregnancy, but that is just the surface of the movie. Through implicit and explicit meaning the audience is able to see the symbolic connection between the objects in the movie, and the characters emotions. Through the social class and feminist analysis the audience can understand the statements the directors showed throughout the film. The actual setting and the camera angles of the movie can show the audience more about the character, and what their lives are like. The movie Juno may be seen as a film about a pregnant teenager, but through the art of film the audience learns that the film has a deeper
People believe technological advances are changing the public’s mind that they must avoid and restrain from using the technologies because they are destroying our experience with real life. This new movement is educating
Genetic analysis should be used freely in society, but only to help those who actually need it. The movie advocates the rules of your genetic makeup which leads to certain opportunities being presented to certain people with higher pedigrees than other. If a person's genetic makeup is sub-par you are unable to obtain your goals in life. While this is not true in the real world it could become a possibility in the future. The movie gives evidence of how your genetic makeup could affect who you love, what jobs you get, and expose you to certain discriminations in your life.
The 1997 science fiction film ‘Gattaca,’ directed by Andrew Niccol delves into the concept that the human spirit will prevail despite an uncaring fate. Protagonist Vincent Freeman represents powerful notions of perseverance and humanity, and through his victory epitomizes humanity’s triumph over science. Niccol implies that all children deemed Valid do not possess the trait of the human spirit and consequently have no true dreams nor aspirations. Niccol infers that when one knows their predetermined fate, they will not strive to accomplish anything further. When a Valid does not accomplish their predetermined fate they struggle under the burden of perfection.
Moreover, demonstrate consequences are taken to oppress racial and ethnic minorities to keep them in a subservient position. Overall, this film has provided me with a visual depiction of how stereotypes are a mental tool that enforces racial segregation and self-hate. The label of “White” became a necessity for Sarah Jane to achieve in society. To attain it she needed to move to a new city, change her name and deny her mother.
“Although the butterfly and the caterpillar are completely different, they are one and the same” (Lamar). The butterfly and the caterpillar in the famous rapper Kendrick Lamar’s quote are similar to teenagers in the real world. All the teenagers around the world suffer from several different problems in their lives. However, there are frequently some similarities between their actions and feelings while they are trying to solve their problems. In spite of the fact that the novel The Catcher in the Rye and the film The Outsiders took place in very different times and even though there is a huge difference between the problems that characters Holden and Dallas deal with, they have lots of similar reactions towards these problems, such as the
Over the past century, film has served as a powerful means of communication to a global audience and has become a vital part of the contemporary culture in a world that is increasingly saturated by visual content. Due to the immediacy and the all-encompassing nature of film, the process of watching a film, is widely perceived to be a passive activity by the general masses. However, quoting Smith in his article about the study of film, “nothing could be further from the truth.” The study and understanding of film as an art form enhances the way we watch and appreciate films. It requires the audience's active participation and interaction with the film in order to fully comprehend the directors' intention behind every creative decision.
I have always viewed movies as mood boosters. Whenever I watch a movie, I judge how good it is according to how well I understand the story. This is why I never truly understand how critics rate movies. However, upon reading John Berger’s “Ev’ry Time We Say Goodbye”, I start to understand how paying attention to the different components of a film helps in understanding the essence of a story. As Berger once said, “There is no film that does not partake of dream.
This film is able to take these concepts and satirize them in a way that becomes comical, after watching this movie, it can put some of these peoples fear to rest because they realize such things are almost impossible. Peoples minds tend to think the worst situations possible before any other conclusions, and this film puts some of those situations to

Movies don’t have a complex storyline as movies shorten the story down to a simple plot with slight similarities to the book it is based off of. Most of the time, the script does not do the story justice. Movies are limited as it relies on visual stimulation and having to tell a story primarily through dialogue. It is tough for filmmakers to depict the inner conflicts of a character’s mind thus making it very shallow and lacking in depth. Furthermore, movies are visual and auditory.
It allows us to reach our destination by showing a way to achieve the things and make us do things which we are afraid to do. Like near the ending of the movie the main character Cooper decides to go into black hole in order to save his daughter and son. But again it may make people to cause trouble because of their love towards others. Like Dr.Mann who wants to leave with other people in his last days plans to kill Cooper and his team members in order to get the spaceship to return to the Earth. Dr. John Brand in order to save human species doesn’t tell Cooper and others that plan A in the movie is impossible but lies to them it only takes some to solve the equation.
