Statement of Purpose
The quest of knowledge has always been my raison d’etre. Among other things, the very fact that man could communicate with another man using sand and over waves has always intrigued me. Every time I looked at a computer terminal I wondered how those letters that are printed on a keyboard when typed could transmit information that was read, understood and processed by the system. I always wondered what could be the use of that contraption that lay beside the monitor people called CPU. It is this curiosity to understand the internal functioning of this device that led me to take up Computer Science as a major in Bachelors among other disciplines.
Growing up in the early 90’s, I had little exposure to computers let alone study

My desire to pursue higher education has never been dictated by pecuniary interests. Education for me was never about attaining a degree, procure a job, make big fortune and perish into obscurity. I want to contribute in whatever way possible to the field of computer science. My grades in Bachelors may look pedestrian but I know that I have the willingness and the ability to do further research in this field of Computer Science. I have seen both the best and the worst that life can offer. To err is human and I have made my fair share of mistakes in life which includes getting arrears in 3 papers in 4th semester. It was the very nadir of my academic life as I had never tasted failure before and was indeed a very humbling experience. But, I took heart from my failure and with all humility worked hard not just to score but to develop my concepts. I looked at my failure as an opportunity to study those papers with a renewed …show more content…
Since, I am working in the Telecom domain, I understand how IOT or Internet of Things is going to revolutionise the world of tomorrow. It is touted as the next major revolution in the field of communication. The IT industry is itself going through a major upheaval where manual processes are being replaced with automated processes. Working as a DevOps engineer, I have the privilege to not only witness this transition but also contribute towards it. The traditional approaches to SDLC are being done away with in favour of newer more agile methodologies; teams be it development, testing or operations no longer work in silos but take active ownership and co-ordinate with other teams to deliver with higher
Learn to fail.” By Angel B. Perez, the author explains how a student gained his attention through the honesty the student provided when asked what he expects to learn or experience in college. The student answered with, “I look forward to the possibility of failure.” Failure
Dana Nguyen Ms. Newray ERWC, Period 5 August 28, 2015 Perez’s & Graff Articles Summaries In Perez’s article, Want To Get Into College? Learn to Fail [ Feb. 12, 2012], failure is the most significant, but hurtful step towards a successful life. If a person has never honestly dealt with failure, how can they possibly ever improve or move forward? It is important to learn and be able to solve problems in society, whether it is for academic or not.
Despite the challenge, I managed to earn decent grades that I was still proud of. Unfortunately, to
The reason that I want to share this story, is to show people who are in currently in high school that it is acceptable to fail. While it is not okay to accept failing as an option, if you tried as hard as you could and still ended up failing, it is actually
I personally was not sure about how I would pay for college but fortunately San Francisco State University allowed me other ways to have the opportunity to afford a bachelor’s degree and hopefully a Master’s degree. My initial incentive to attend college was better my education and understand of the world around me if even 5 miles away or 10,000 miles away. As a first generation student, I saw the idea of becoming more of an average worker fascinating, I aspire to be part of the 75% of successful investment, but if I am destined to be part of the 25% then I will find a way to continue to better myself with
The Value of a College Degree Having a college degree is arguably one of the most important things you can achieve in your lifetime. In today’s society, it is getting much more difficult to survive without one. Most places of business that offer substantial wages and benefits require some sort of college degree. This is a problem for most people in the United States due to the fact that only 17% of the U.S. population has earned a college degree (Odland).
I decided to apply to the University of Wisconsin-Madison because of their nursing school’s collaboration with scientists and renowned researchers across the UW-Madison campus, the nation, and the world. This school will help me network with the best researchers and scientists whom I can learn and grow from. The university is the third largest research university in the country and will help me further my career in research as a nursing student. Research is very important in the nursing field due to the fast growing pace of diseases and illnesses. There needs to be new techniques in developing cures and care plans, especially treatment that are unique to each individuals’ needs.
Failure is the not the end but it is a process of learning and getting success if you don’t giving up. I remember back in Nepal when my siblings and friends passed their classes but I did not. I felt gloomy because I was the only one who failed. I was crying but my dad did not want me to cry for what I could not do because he wanted me to move forward to achieve success.
I wish to attend college to further enhance my education, to be a first generation college student, and to become a better version of myself. First, I wish to enhance and further my education. Knowledge is the key to success and those keys can unlock doors never before seen. A high school diploma is great but it is not enough for me or any huge company.
Finding motivation to attend college is easy, keeping the motivation to finish is the difficult part. I decided to enroll in college to earn my Bachelor’s degree in Business with a concentration in Finance. I hope that the degree will give me the opportunity to apply for a better position within the organization that I currently work for. A secondary goal of returning to school is to demonstrate to my son that attending college is required for many jobs and that returning to school as an adult has various difficult challenges. I have been working for the past nine years as an Assistant Financial Officer and am highly competent at my job.
My interest in the Computer Science major at Carnegie Mellon was first piqued while I was in the Microsoft Student Partners Program, where I met a Technical Evangelist from Microsoft who graduated from the course. I had heard from him how the nation’s best graduates of Computer Science were often recruited from Carnegie Mellon. Naturally, this keen interest sparked off by my encounter with him did not just stop there as I am now sitting at my desk writing my CMU supplementary essays. As someone who has been trying to find myself within the tech sector in the future, Carnegie Mellon’s vast ties to the technology world only serve to underscore its appeal.
Everyone knows that life is not easy all of the time, and everyone will make mistakes. Making mistakes is an inevitable part of being human. However, it is what you choose to do afterwards that matters. Successful people choose to leave it in the past, and to learn from it in the future. It is hard to be successful if all of the focus is on failure.
“Our hopes for a more just, safe, and peaceful world can only be achieved when there is universal respect for the inherent dignity and equal rights of all members of the human family.” – UN Women Executive Director Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka Throughout my life, I have never been completely decisive on a career path. However, in the last few years I have realized that my passion for human rights advocacy is my natural calling which I am destined to pursue. As I entered my first year of college at the University of Maryland – College Park, I took a specific interest in a group known as Consult Your Community. The organization allows undergraduate students to engage with low-income and minority-owned small businesses to provide pro bono consulting services.
After carefully evaluating my abilities, desire to widen and reform my knowledge and aspiration to advance my career, I wish to pursue a Master’s degree in Computer Science at College. My goal is to work on the contemporary issues in the Information Technology industry and employ the knowledge to provide better solutions to the complex IT challenges. In the years to come, I envision myself as a lead architect designing systems which will get smarter and more customizable through interactions with data, devices and people. My whole life has been a multi-faceted learning curve which has prepared me to take the academic challenges of the graduate life.
Technology is a constantly evolving industry, but with evolution requires understanding of its fundamentals. In the modern era, a mass majority of the population spends countless hours staring at a computer or smartphone screen with little to no grasp on how it actually functions. Characters and industry experts in the Robert Harris novel, Enigma, Steve Lohr’s New York Times article “Where Non-Techies Can Get With Programming” , and the Natasha Singer New York Times article “How Silicon Valley Pushed Coding Into American Classrooms” voiced their unique opinions on why knowing basic computer coding languages are so important. Everyone should have access to computer science education.
