Qualities Of Odysseus In 'The Odyssey'

In The Odyssey an epic poem by Homer, Odysseus, a hero from Ithaca, is trapped on his way home from Athens and Troy. His son, Telemachus, goes on a journey looking for his lost father. Both son and father want to reclaim their house from the suitors who wish to marry Penelope, Odysseus’ wife. Genghis Khan, Choi Yuna, my brother, An Thai, and Odysseus have traits like strength, thoughtfulness, and attractiveness. People need heroes with these traits because they need role models and someone to guide them through life.

Odysseus is a typical example of a hero. He is able to pull off miraculous things to save himself and his crew seemingly without fail. The story of his journey is well known, and a great tale of his adventures. In the two parts we have read so far, we see what he is willing to do for his crew, and his intelligence and quick thinking in difficult situations. The first challenge that waits them is the island of Cyclopes. They begin by checking out the island to see if there is any danger, but they are caught. Odysseus then has to lie about the ship saying it had been destroyed. Then after his friends meet a terrible fate, he tells Polyphemus, the giant, his name is Nohbdy. After he stabs the cyclops in the eye, this leads him to say that nobody hurt him. After this Odysseus makes his escape, and is almost caught as they leave, so Odysseus taunts them, telling them his name and story. This is the end of act one. In act two they tell us of the island of Aeolus which ends up giving them a worthless gift, and then the land of Laestrygones, that destroy all of their ships but one. They then end up at Aeaea, and split up into two groups, one to search the island, and the other to watch the ship. The exploring group then gets trapped by Circe’s cunning magic. Following this news, Odysseus is offered help from Hermes for ways to avoid Circe’s magic. He then enters and tries to avoid the fate of his crew. “The Odyssey” is an Epic Poem which discusses the life story of Odysseus. The main focus of the poem is the journey of Odysseus and his way back home. Certain events distract him, most importantly; his encounter with the Gods, Goddesses. It takes Odysseus all of what it takes to head back home, including his bravery and intelligence. These qualities in Odysseus not only help himself but his men survive through the chaos of the journey called “The Odyssey”.

There are many types of hero, fictional, historical, and modern day. Odysseus was a historical hero, who saved his home of Ithaca. He had so many heroic traits, such as, bravery, courage, caring, loyalty, determination, and so much more. Fictional, modern day and other historical heroes have many of these traits as well. Therefore, the word hero has not changed.

In the Odyssey by Homer, Odysseus shows heroism throughout his interactions with the Cyclops, Polyphemus, more than anything else. Odysseus first demonstrates his heroic actions towards Polyphemus by using one of his various cunning tricks. Odysseus already knows that he couldn’t possibly defeat the Cyclops by fighting due to their difference in strength and size, so he came up with a machination, which was to do what he’s adept to, using his brain. He tried to make the Cyclops drunk so he wouldn’t be in his normal state, which would be at his advantage because it would be easier for him to take actions when Polyphemus is drunk-asleep. In the epic story the Odyssey by Homer, Odysseus is returning from the Trojan war, and on his way home he finds many obstacles ahead of him. Odysseus is the ruler of Ithaca and he is trying to return home to his land. Many creatures try and stop him from achieving his goal of returning home, but he and his crew have to push through and get home. Odysseus portrays bravery and courage leading his crew through these tough challenges. Odysseus heroically leads his crew and himself through dangerous obstacles, but also foolishly endangers them during the journey home.

Heroes in today’s literature often take on difficult challenges that put themselves in constant danger to better themselves. Joseph Campbell came out with a book in 1949 called “A Hero with a Thousand Faces” which he introduced the “Hero’s Journey” formula that Odysseus closely follows. The Odyssey is a Greek mythology following Odysseus, a Trojan War hero who faces many dangers trying to get back to his homeland of Ithaca. At his homeland of Ithaca suitors are eating out his home and trying to marry his wife while Telemachus sets out to find his father, but eventually comes back unsuccessful. Do you know any epic heroes that show heroic qualities? Some heroes that you might be thinking of would be Batman, Spider-Man, or even Thor; but those aren't the epic heroes I'm talking about. I'm talking about the real heroes the ones who don't need any powers to achieve anything. The type of hero that does not need to fly or shoot lasers out of it's eyes. One hero that would be considered an epic hero would be Odysseus; you might not know who he is, well he's a character that comes out in the Iliad and the Odyssey. Odysseus is an epic hero because he cares about his family, he is intelligent and he shows courage and because he shows determination. There was one obstacle where they fell into a cyclone and were stuck there Odysseus managed to get through it.

Odysseus was an effective leader in battle, an amazing fighter, and he was the person who helped defeat Troy by using the wooden horse. Although everyone thought this was a heroic action by Odysseus to obtain victory, the gods were not so happy with him, especially Zeus. The gods punished Odysseus by making his journey back home difficult for him and his men. Even though Odysseus was being challenged by gods, he had traits that were of an epic hero. Also, throughout his journey he had friends and companions to help him travel back to Ithaca safely and obtain his kingdom once again.

He finally makes it home and has to prove to his wife that he is truly Odysseus. In fact, his character traits can connect to others in the world, like determination. Odysseus’s determination throughout his adventures is a similar trait that I share and has brought us both success.

A child relies on his parents and is foolish from time to time. A child could also represent the ever so often hero, Odysseus from the Odyssey by Homer. The Odyssey is an epic poem about the mortal Odysseus and his journey to get home and at Ithaca, with the help of the greek goddess Athena. Throughout the poem, Odysseus is generally seen as a hero when Athena helps him, but once in awhile he can act like a hero without any help, but is otherwise selfish without it.

Many of these traits that George has are the same to Odysseus. He was a commander for his army while sailing to Troy. Troy was an enemy towards Ithaca. Also, Odysseus had just as many hardships as George. He got sent away from his family battling Troy. He then battled there for 10 years. It was a hard battle then Odysseus finally succeeded and won the war between the two rivaling cities. Back at home, on Ithaca. He left a newborn son named Tellemicus, and a wife named Penelope. As well as an entire city throw into chaos because everyone thinks he’s dead. Meanwhile, Odysseus gets thrown off of course sailing back from Troy and that’s where his hardships begin. After battling for 10 years, Odysseus leaves Troy in hopes of coming home and seeing his wife Penelope and now almost grown son. But he soon gets thrown off course because his men upset the gods.

The odyssey, an epic told by Homer in ancient greece, has many major themes following odysseus’s adventures. While Odysseus is sentenced to never return home after the Trojan War. He is overcoming challenges to return home to his wife penelope and his son Telemachus. Throughout the story major themes of loyalty, hospitality and vengeance are hidden within the plot. The story continues to show his heroic side with three major traits. His first trait is being exceptionally skilled continued with cleverness and bravery. Despite Odysseus’s challenges he proves himself a hero because of the actions that show him as skilled, clever and brave.

Over time, many novels have been composed but society seems to continually come back to the writings of Homer. His novels have captivated audiences around the world with their heroic qualities that audience’s can appeal to. The Odyssey by Homer displays human like characteristics that society can admire because it reveals the morals of society. The audience is with Odysseus as he suffers through heartbreak, long nights away from home, and revenge. These qualities are all possessed by humans in today’ society which makes the epic poem more relatable to today’s public. The epic appeals to audiences today because Odysseus is a hero that society can admire for his perseverance through a perilous journey.
