In the classic novel “Lord Of The Flies” by a British naval officer named William Golding shows its readers what it was like during World War II in a different P.O.V. Imagine multiple boys stranded on an Island without adults, and are slowly being driven mad. If it weren’t for Ralph, Piggy, and Simon their “Society” would have dissipated long before, and the boy would not have been rescued. Ralphs bravery is an important trait in the plot, his bravery benefits ever boy on the island. Simon is very helpful, especially when Ralph needs help. Piggy is known for being intelligent, Ralph goes to Piggy when he needs advice, and that benefits everyone. Being a leader means you have to make multiple hard decisions, luckily for the boys Ralph usually …show more content…
“I can’t decide if this is an island. Three of us will go on an expedition and find out” (Golding 23). At that moment Ralph volunteers himself to go on the possible dangerous expedition with the two others, Simon, and Jack. He believes as a leader he needs to go on this voyage therefore he is only able to take others. Ralph went on this expedition so he can acquire more information on the island. By volunteering he earned more respect from the boys. Ralph had to make many difficult decisions during his reign as chief. Some of those decisions had a good result, while the others had bad results. An example of a bad decision he made was when him, and the other boys lit the fire on top of the mountain causing the island to catch on fire along with some …show more content…
“The trouble was if you were a chief you had to think, you had to be wise. And then the occasion slipped by so that you had to grab at a decision.” (Golding 78). Being a leader shows initiative, and making tough decisions also meant thinking it through. Luckily for the boys on the island Ralph does exactly that. Towards the end of their time on the island a few boys didn't make it, some of those decisions led to death, but the good ones led to achievements. Not every boy on that island is like Ralph. Which is why he was the one who had to make the tough decisions. Because he knew how to think, and he thought about stuff
The boys knew Ralph would do what is right and best and in the end what they truly wanted. The other boys would be happy that they got a say in what happened on the island as well. Ralph did not change much in the novel, he mostly stuck to his ways of civilization, law, order and rescue. He tasted the urge of savagery in the novel and understands why the other boys have acted so savagely. Although he realized he must stay civilized and did not change.
‘’ You are always responsible for how you act, no matter how you feel. Remember that’’ unknown Ralph should not get Two Dog for these three reasons: Ralph went secretively went against his parent’s sound counsel, Ralph’s expedition could be a catastrophe, and lastly The first reason Ralph should not go is because he secretively went against his parent 's sound counsel. He initially rejected the thought about informing his parents of his decision. He didn’t evaluate the effect on his family, especially with his mother 's uncontrollable nerves.
The mannered and civilized boy, Ralph, shows excellent survival skills. He uses logic and strategic planning to gain durability in an unfamiliar environment. For example, when the group of boys crashed into the deserted island, he commenced the first meeting and started a bonfire. Another example would be how the boys would come up with assumptions and superstitions of an actual beast that exists in the island, he investigates to find out that it was actually a dead paratrooper, and uses that as evidence to tell everyone to keep calm, (although they didn't believe in him). These events all imply on how Ralph is a natural leader in any given situation.
In William Golding’s Lord of the Flies, there are many possible leaders. Ralph’s adversary on the Island had been Jack, who had been pushing to take over as leader. This caused a lot of controversy among the common people on who is the more powerful leader, rather than the most effective. Throughout the book Ralph has proven to be the better leader in two ways; he’s civilized and organized.
Although in this scene the boys entrust their faith in Ralph, he fails later on to keep their loyalty with him and loses the majority of his party to Jack. As shown Ralph is able to keep ahold as well as gain the loyalty of his group due to his high
Ralph "A true leader has the confidence to stand alone, the courage to make tough decisions and the compassion to listen to the needs of others. He does not set out to be a leader, but becomes one by the quality of his actions and the integrity of his intent”(Commentary: Leadership in Quotations). In the book Lord of the Flies one of the main characters is named Ralph. Ralph is a born leader who tries to lead the boys to get back home from a deserted island.
Although Ralph seemed to be a leader but he never really took control of his power and authority as leader. From the outside Ralph was good looking and seemed to be the best candidate as a leader. But soon after he began to show that he may not have been the best choice for leader, he gave up very easily. Ralph decided that he wanted to build a fire on the island that would double as a smoke signal. He assigned Jack and his hunters to keep the fire going and they failed to do it.
One example of why Jack is a better leader than Ralph is because he creates jobs for the boys and maintains them well. This is something Ralph struggled with. Ralph assigned more of a variety of jobs for people, but the boys did not listen to Ralph and he did not reprimand them. In the text it states, “Some of you will stay here to improve the cave and defend the gate. I shall take a few hunters with me and bring back meat.
Ralph starts out as a very strong, and confident leader, but as the story goes on he is second-guessing him self, and needs Piggy to help him know what his goals are, and how to lead the group. That was until Piggy was killed, then he went into complete fear with Jack leaving the group, Ralph didn’t want more boys to leave him for Jack so, he gives fewer commands to not drive the boys away.
During a time of war, a british plane carrying a group of schoolboys is shot down over the Pacific, killing all adults and leaving the group of boys stranded on an island. One of the two leaders of the group, Jack, is the perfect character to portray humanity changing from civilized to savage. Jack is power-hungry, violent, and savage. In the beginning of the book, Jack is innocent and carelessly follows the leader, Ralph.
When it came time to choose a Chief for the island, Jack believed there was no competition for leader of the tribe. Ralph believed in rules, his overall goal was to have the boys create a society similar to the one they had known before they crashed onto the island. He was constantly trying to get the boys to build shelter, gather food, and perform other jobs necessary for their survival. Every day Ralph was commanding the boys to keep the fire going. In Ralphs eyes this was the only way they were going to be rescued.
The tribe wants to hunt Ralph even though he did not do anything wrong. In fact, all Ralph wants to do is get rescued which is something that not only benefits him but everyone else on the island. The boys on the island want to hurt Ralph solely for their own pleasure. Ralph does not share the violent beliefs of the tribe and because of this, he does not join them. However, because Ralph does not engage in the violent actions taken by the other boys, they target him.
Although Jack expresses strong desire to become chief, the boys elect Ralph as a leader, suggesting an air of charisma that made him worthy of his position. He believes a leader has to “think, be wise… grab at a decision”, someone who can look after others and keep the group in
Golding shows that although Ralph’s leadership starts off strongly, authority based on order will not survive due to man’s savage nature. Like in a democracy, Ralph gets the position of authority when the boys elect him as their leader. As chief,
“Well, we won’t be painted,” said Ralph, “because we aren’t savages” (172). There are many great leaders all over the world. To be a great leader one must have certain qualities including, being courageous, being responsible, willing to take charge, having all priorities straight on the important things, have determination, and many more. In Lord of the Flies, Ralph shows all of these characteristics and a few more. Out of every boy on the island, Ralph would be the best choice as leader.
