Question Behind the Question As a future nurse one of the most important parts of my schooling/career is learning how to properly communicate. This proper communication needs to be used in all aspects of my career, with coworkers, patients, patients’ families’, doctors, and all other healthcare professionals involved in a patients care. When communication is lacking the patients care, treatment, and outcome can suffer greatly. The book “The Question Behind the Question” really opened my eyes to how easy miscommunication can occur, along with how easy it is to aid in better communication. In this paper I will reflect on three different stories from the book. The first story will relate to my nursing practice. The second story will be helpful to my successful completion of the nursing program. The final story will aid in positively influencing my nursing practice. My favorite story from “The Question Behind the Question” was about personal accountability. I think this was my favorite story because when you think of a nurse you think of someone who is confident in the care they are providing. Personal accountability should come along with confidence. If you are confident that you are providing the best possible care …show more content…
The second story from “The Question Behind the Question” that I will talk about relates to successfully completing the nursing program. I feel as if I am already living this short story. The key point of the story is repetition. You learn by doing something repetitively, until it is stuck in your brain. I believe this is one of the keys to successfully getting through nursing school. To master each new skill you will practice, practice, and practice some more. You must go over care plan after care plan, assessment after assessment to become proficient in the skills you will use on a daily basis to take care of your

Peplau (1988, cited by Betts, 2002, in Kenworthy et al, 2002) argues nursing as an interpersonal process. Betts (2002) argues that effective communication is intricate and obscure. Both the nurse and the patient are distinctive individuals, and they both bring with them their perceptions, values, interpretations and experiences to the interpersonal process. To achieve trust, the nurse must use openness, honesty and effective communication
Proper communication skills can decrease stress related to the miscommunication of ideas. It has been shown that “communication plays a key role in the diagnosis, care and treatment of patients” (Khademi et al., 2021). Continuing with the angry family member scenario, the nurse should encourage the family members to express their feelings and the nurse should acknowledge what has been discussed. This shows that the nurse is displaying positive, interpersonal communication by providing compassion and active listening.
Mary’s sixteen month training made her a greater nurse. This training made it possible for her to be asked to speak for the NACGN, become a member of that association, and later become a member of the ANA. Mary’s active membership in the nursing associations, and her outstanding work as a nurse made it possible for an award to be named after her. It is because of Mary that women of all races who aspire to be in the nursing profession can make it through like Mary

To have a better understanding of nursing from a person who has been in the field longer, I interview Ms. Santa, Faulkner University’s school nurse. She is located in the school’s gym and is able to accommodate every Faulkner student, faculty, and staff. It was joy to interview her because unlike Alicia Burke, she only has an associates in nursing. Ms. Santa is from France and started out attending nursing school at Le Vinatier Colloque.
Communication is described as the interchange of information, thoughts, and feelings between individuals using dialog or other methods (Kourkouta, & Papathanasiou, 2014). Communication between patients, nurses, and other healthcare professionals can influence the patient outcome subsequently, understanding what establishes an effective communication will be beneficial for nurses and other healthcare professionals. Having the skills to articulate efficiently exists beyond having verbal skills. According to Wright (2012), to establish effective communication, a nurse should develop the use of nonverbal cues such as body language, demonstrating active listening skills to facilitate assurance that the interaction remains successful, and having
According to Patterson & Krouse (2015), It is important to transfer the message in a good way, for that the communication skills is one of the most important basic skills of nursing leadership. More than that, communication in nursing can make their job efficiently and help them to communicate with a wide range of people, including the patient, patient 's family, and healthcare providers. This brings back all sorts of emotions from anxiety when we would have to test our skills, to happy with the comradery of our class coming together learning something new. I picked this piece because I think it shows how great the structure of nursing and instruction can be. It shows that there always was a standard for learning and that nurses just weren’t thrown in the hospitals to figure it out on their own. It shows how we strive as nurses to perform the tasks correctly and efficiently.
