"Just before throwing myself upon the hyena, to collect myself before the final struggle, I looked down. Between my feet, under the bench, I beheld Richard Parker's head. It was gigantic." In this quote Pi realizes the true size of Richard Parker and how much of a threat he could be and because of this he must find ways to survive with the tiger. Pi is now alone with Richard parker who he once thought was an enemy but now he must make into an ally to
However, their family went through a shipwreck like a Titanic, except for Pi, all of the people were gone. Pi survived on the cover of the lifeboat; there was also a hyena, a broken zebra, a female orangutan, and an adult
Pi continues his journey by learning how to live in a small space with these animals and even training one of them. In the end Pi reveals another story with people replacing the animals that were on the lifeboat before. Pi had initially used animals which best represented the people who were really in the boat. This showed how throughout the story, since these people were put into a life threatening situation, they had revealed a more primal side. Life of Pi is accompanied with various symbols, with each
When Pi and his family are on the Tsimtsum, Pi is the only one to wake up, and while he tries to wake up Ravi, he ultimately starts the call to adventure by exploring the explosion on his own. (New PDF 83-84) This symbolizes the very beginning of the hero’s journey and how Martel spent most of the first half of the book developing Pi so we as the readers can understand what he is about to go through. Next, Pi gets thrown onto the lifeboat with a ton of animals, being the only one to survive the boat sinking.
It can be difficult to accept that a tiger and a boy could coexist on a lifeboat alone at peace, but somehow in the context of the novel, it seems possible. Piscine Patel is the protagonist as well as the narrator for the majority of the book. With him playing both roles, this narrative device distances the reader from the realistic standpoint. It’s difficult to predict the accuracy of Pi’s story, but it may have been Martell’s intention all along.
Pi used to be a good prayer, he was kind to people, he loved animals and all living things. But know, he destroys his faith, destroy his hard works before the trip on his religion dream, ultimately betrays the goals of himself and his family, betrays all the person who trusted him. Therefore, although Pi is alive now, but there is just an empty body lying on the bed and nothing left inside except tears on his
Lastly, the real reason for this quest and that being a strong will of survival. Pi has to find land to save not only his life, but to find out if his family or any of the animals survived as well. The sad reality was he never did find his family, but he was gifted with the wisdom and the strength of his family or even possibly his religion to save himself from a certain
Not everyone can stand eating or drinking unpleasant substances, survive while being blind, and live next to carnivorous creatures. Pi on the other hand withstands all this misfortune for nearly a year. Additionally, another theme that comes to mind is that survival instincts result in some
Even though Pi was living in the perfect life, the ship sinking caused his whole lifestyle to be flipped upside down. As one can imagine, being alone with a very scary animal in the middle of the Pacific Ocean is extremely terrifying. At the beginning of Part 2, Pi felt very helpless and was extremely scared of his circumstance. “I looked out at the empty horizon. There was so much water.
This is important because, though Pi only cared for Richard Parker at the beginning, he started to actually care if Richard was with him or not. On the boat, Pi had to stay patient and sympathetic toward his
Pi indicates, “You may be astonished that in such a short period of time I could go from weeping over the muffled killing of a flying fish to gleefully bludgeoning to death a dorado” (Martel 89). This clearly states that Pi is a dynamic character through this time span. At first, his religious values made it hard for him to kill the flying fish, but when the dorado was killed “gleefully” he goes against his religious values. Conclusively, people may think that Pi does not change as a person, but evidently, he is looked upon as a dynamic character after the actions of killing the flying
These realistic events are not the only examples that show Pi ignores all his morals in order to survive and over the course of the book these events can be seen to get more unbelievable. In addition, this progression could relate to the continuous loss of humanity inside of Pi. Most evidently, in Part 2 an almost direct progression to become more and more magical and unbelievable can be found. Beginning with the shipwreck, then along the way, finding another blind man on the vast ocean and finally to come across a floating island
During his stay in Pondicherry, he happened to get the story from Piscine Molitor Patel who claimed that his story would make him believe in God. The novel, Life of Pi, which is structured on 100 chapters runs into 319 pages. The novel’s setting moves from India to
Pi’s life has changed in many aspects, he has learned many new things that have helped him out. Pi’s character transforms based on life circumstances, spirituality, and relationships, which the author utilizes to shift reader’s perception of religion. Pi grows up to be a good man, but he goes through a lot of difficult times and has to learn many things, which involve religion, and handling things on his own. Religion played a big role in the development and growth of Pi. When he first found out about Christianity and Hinduism he was amazed, he had never heard or learned about it.
The novel “Life of Pi” gives insight into many of life’s questions, through the mind of Pi Patel. Pi is a very lovable young man who readers can see change in him throughout the story. Pi is very open minded on life as he believes in three very different religions, first being Hindu, then Cristian, and Muslim. When he first found himself on the life boat he was a frail vegetarian boy who had to talk himself through the choice of eating crackers made with animal fat instead of not eating, that changed quickly later in the story he soon did not think about what he was eating and tore into fish and turtle to get his feed. Surviving a ship sinking, and living on the open pacific ocean for two hundred twenty seven days is a very extreme task, that
