Tone/Mood:
“ ... I would use her notebooks to reclaim
the past and overcome terrors of my own…”
(Page 1)
The first page really sets a dreadful tone for the
entire book. Isabel Allende uses words like
“terrors”, “defenseless”, “mourning”,
“powerless”, “indecent”, and “disgust”. I feel
as though the ending of the book will as
somber as the beginning of it.
Excerpt:
“But it must have been easier for me than most
people, because I’ve never been particularly
sociable …”
(Page 24)
I can relate to this because it would be easy for
me to live isolated just like Esteban. I'm not a
very social person, I hate parties and all other
social events. I, myself like Esteban, am
happier when Im not in the presence of other
people.

Chapter 4
Quote:
"I set my curse on you, Esteban!" Ferula
shouted back. "You will always be alone! Your
body and soul will shrivel up and you'll die like
a dog!"
(Page 147)
After discovering Ferula in bed with Clara,
Esteban throws his sister out of his house and
tells her that he will kill her if she ever comes
near his family again. Ferula goes while leaving
this curse on her brother. Which, in a sense
comes back to haunt him.
Family:
"They buried her in a special plot in the tiny
graveyard alongside the abandoned church, at
the foot of the volcano, because she had been
the patron's wife, in a manner of speaking,
since she had given him the only son who bore
his name, though not his surname, and

Jean de Satigny explains to Blanca that he had
no intentions of having sex with her. He

together without being intimate.
Chapter 9
Foreshadowing:
“Alba was born feet first, which is a sign of
good luck….. There’s no need to worry about
this little girl. She will be lucky and she will be
happy."
(Page 223)
I think Alba will bring a lot excitement into the
family despite the her parents forbidden love
affair. I think she will brings lot of change for
the better in to the both the Trueba and Garcia
family. Hopefully the two families will put
their differences to the side.
Characterization:
“The presence of his granddaughter
sweetened Esteban Trueba’s character.”
(Page 295)
Esteban Trueba has a soft spot for his
granddaughter, Alba, but that does not bring
him any closer to Blanca. In the long run,
Esteban and Blanca will both come together

As Mother Teresa once said “Loneliness and the feeling of being unwanted is the most terrible poverty” the feeling of loneliness can be terrible for everyone making them feel like they have lost everything they had. People can start feeling the sensation of loneliness because of their own families or the surrounding around them. Family can play the most important role to feeling alone and feeling unwanted by them causing you to make decisions that do not have a back button on them. Everyone is different and they all face loneliness in their own way. In Brando Skyhorse Novel, The Madonnas of Echo Park, Beatriz is the mother of Felicia and the grandmother of Aurora.
De La Garza’s neighbor – are those who attended the wedding of Pedro and Rosaura. Rebel forces and Federal troops – are those that were engaged in the fierce battle. Father Ignacio – the parish priest who told Mama Elena that her daughter, Gertrudis, was working in a brothel in a
She vows to god she will never ask him for anything for her son” (260). This shows us how Lourdes once cared for her son, but now is burdened with him for all of his actions. The point of view shows us how how Enrique once cared for his mother but now his mother is crying because of what Enrique has turned out to be. In conclusion, the POV shows us how different perspectives show us how Enrique ended up because of how he changed. Analyzing how Nazario uses literary devices show us how Enrique has changed throughout the novel.
First of all they are from Guatemala. Estevan and Esperanza are illegal immigrants staying with Mattie in the apartment above her tire shop to escape the horrible things they went through when in Guatemala. There were many hardships in their life, including their daughter Ismene being taking by the government in Guatemala because they did not give up the names of teachers on the teachers’ union. Due to this event Esperanza became very depressed and even tried to kill herself. Another reason they are not a traditional family is because of how they have to live.
Lourdes, Enrique’s mother, loved her children as every mother does and did anything in her power to provide for them even if it meant to travel 1,619 miles into a foreign country. Many parents like Lourdes have left their entire families for job opportunities and risk their lives through the dangerous journey but they have the hope and motivation because of love— love for their sons and daughters. Even Enrique found himself doing the same for his soon-to-be-born baby which was one of the components that made him persevere in his
She is very obsessed with her wedding that “she even painstakingly chose what her dress would look like, down to the last sequin” (Granados 5). In addition, she makes lists of the boys who are most likely to be her groom. This means she is not ready to have a boyfriend because we do not choose who we fall in love
Felice is an independent woman who lives a happy life. “Felice is free, she speaks herself into being, defying the social control that extends even to the geography” (Thomson). Felice does not have a husband, drives her own pickup, and provides immense help for Cleofilas. Cleofilas is fascinated by Felice and finds inspiration through her. The author claims “Everything about this woman, this Felice, amazed Cleofilas….she said she didn’t have a husband.
Characters in The Great Gatsby put the thought of money and success before their own health and living standards or personal relationships. When Gatsby takes Nick downtown to go meet up with some associates for lunch, he introduces Nick to Meyer Wolfshiem. Wolfshiem is clearly a mobster of some sort and goes on to discuss an old building across the street from where they were dining after Nick questions its significance,“‘The old Metropole,’ brooded Mr. Wolfshiem gloomily. ‘Filled with faces dead and gone. Filled with friends gone now forever.
“She had done nothing but reach up to the heat on her mouth and stare at the blood on her hand as if even then she didn’t understand (Cisneros).” Juan Pedro keeps this behavior up. A woman who goes by Felice changes Cleofilas idea on how a woman should be treated and their purpose to society. Felice helps Cleofilas escape her husband and takes her across the border back to Mexico.
Through Gatsby’s actions, he desperately created himself (wanted) to be with Daisy. Through these quotes, Gatsby shows the amount of danger he will deal with to be with Daisy. “Gatsby bought his new house so that Daisy would be just across the bay. ”(Fitzgerald 78). Gatsby moved near Daisy, acting like he was a stranger but Gatsby had wanted to be with her for five years.
It is important for the reader to understand that the timing of when the author introduces the characters. She introduces the neighbors which were depressing names when she was not happy and lonely in her marriage. When she makes up her mind to leave her abusive husband, Felice is introduced. The introduction shows the progression of maturity Cleofilas endures as she gains
The dysfunctionality of this family is anything but enjoyable. You have Felice’s father Brian who is close to irrelevant, he is ready to put his family on the line for a fling with his co-worker Fernanda, and is even driving in a hurricane to get to his office only because he suspects that his best friend Javier is blathering to Fernanda behind his back if he does not show to work. “Images of Javier and Fernanda fill his head: he sees them laughing, heads tilting together. The rushing, chaotic highway, the backlit sky…he feels increasingly doomed, assailed by a serious of bad decisions, yet he’s determined to be at the office. ”(305)
Esteban throughout the book throws multiple temper tantrums in which he smashes things and in one instance responds violently towards his wife and daughter. Esteban's abuse to his wife has significance to the story as a whole because it causes her to never speak to him again. Early on in the book Esteban rapes many of the young tenants on his Hacienda. This significantly affects the plot because one of the grandchildren who was born from a son of one of the rapes, Esteban garcia, would go on to cause a great amount of pain to the trueba
