Many individuals experience growth and development through significant experiences that happen in their lives; these transitions help shape and define who they truly are. The Simple Gift written by Steven Herrick was published in 2000. The Simple Gift is about a sixteen year old boy named Billy who runs away from an abusive and violent home; Billy turns to a hobo lifestyle. Billy finds himself in a town called Bendarat, where he meets an old hobo named Old Bill and forms a close relationship with him and a girl named Caitlin. The Hobbit by JRR Tolkien written in 1937 is about a Hobbit, Bilbo Baggins who is taken on a journey to reclaim the dwarves home from a dragon. Throughout Bilbo’s journey he develops and changes from being in his own little …show more content…
In the Simple Gift Billy recognises Old Bill as a father figure, and they both have something in common. Throughout this poetic novel Billy and Old Bill develop a close friendship. "I like the kid...I like his company" Herrick uses repetition to convey that Old Bill thinks of Billy as a friend and that Old Bill likes having Billy around. In the Hobbit when Thorin is dying on the table he wishes to part with Bilbo in friendship. “I wish to part in friendship from you, and I would take back my words and deeds at the gate.” This shows that Thorin forgives Bilbo for taking the Arkenstone, and he wishes to part in friendship because he is dying and leaving Middle Earth to go the halls of his fathers. In Tomorrow When the War Began when they are back at Corrie’s house, Ellie and Homer grow their friendship even more when they are talking about when Ellie killed the soldiers with the lawnmower. “ El, it’s not your fault, It’s not your fault. It’s theirs. It’s all…theirs.” When Homer is saying this, Beattie uses a close up shot of Homer. This expresses how Homer supports Ellie and her actions towards the soldiers and makes their friendship even stronger. Throughout these three texts we see that friendships are important to individuals to help them grow, flourish and become closer to each …show more content…
In the Simple Gift Billy finds courage to leave his violent, abusive home and father and journey towards a new and better home. In this poem Herrick uses direct speech as Billy leaves a note for his dad. “See ya Dad. I’ve taken the alcohol. Drink this instead to celebrate your son leaving home.” This conveys that Billy has the courage to leave his home and to take his father’s alcohol and leave him with the bottle of lemonade to celebrate Billy’s leaving home. Courage is also shown in the Hobbit when Bilbo gave Bard the Arkenstone, Bilbo knew that Thorin would be angry; but he still gave the Arkenstone to Bard anyway. Tolkien uses imagery to show that Thorin is getting angry because Bard and the Elven King have the Arkenstone. “How came you by it, “I gave it to them!” This conveys the courage of Bilbo by telling Thorin about him taking the Arkenstone, Bilbo also knew the risks of what would happen to him if he told Thorin the truth. In Tomorrow When the War Began when the soldiers are shooting at Ellie and Fi, and Robyn takes the gun off Chris; the director uses slow motion and the sound is muted to show dramatic affect. Through the dramatic affect shows us that Robyn has the courage to put aside her religious views on not to murder anyone and to shoot down the soldiers attacking her friends. Courage is shown to us throughout these three texts allowing us to understand
As you can tell from my examples both characters, Elie Wiesel and Atticus Finch are courageous. It may be in different ways, with Elie going through physical pain and Atticus being more of a mental/verbal challenge, but in the end, it’s all courage. Hence there is courage in both Night and To Kill A Mockingbird. Both characters knew that they were most likely going to be conquered, they had nearly no chance of overcoming their problems, yet they both put forth their full effort until the
In chapter five of the “Hobbit” Tolkien demonstrates the Archetypal Quest when Bilbo awoke in the darkness alone, he must depend on himself if he wants any chance of finding his way out. “Just imagine his fright! He could hear nothing, see nothing and he could feel nothing except the stone on the floor.” Bilbo only let these thoughts cross his mind for a moment before he “got up and groped about on all fours, till he touched the wall of the tunnel.” This event is where we begin to see the new hobbit bilbo is becoming.
“The Hobbit” is a piece of prose written by J.R.R Tolkien. There are many ways that Bilbo has changed as a charter in the first eight chapters of The Hobbit. For example in the first chapter “An Unexpected Party”, Bilbo says,”I don’t like the sound of that. I really must sit down for a minute and collect my wits.” This is how Bilbo was at the beginning of the book, he was confused and scared why there were so many people at his house, and when Gandalf told him he was going to take him on an adventure.
Courage The dictionary definition of courage is “strength in the face of pain of grief.” Throughout the novel The Things They Carried by Tim O’Brien, the common idea of courage is expressed with different meanings as each character interprets courage differently.
Bilbo Baggins the Burglar Thesis: In the book The Hobbit, the character Bilbo Baggins is a middle class hobbit who must challenged his introverted nature to help the dwarves reclaim their land. Bilbo Baggins is a hobbit, who lives in his hobbit hole. Hobbits are generally short and fat introverted people who don’t leave their house much. Bilbo Baggins was living like that, until one day, thirteen dwarves and his old wizard friend(Gandalf) enter his house and start eating and talking like it was their house.
"You gain strength, courage, and confidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face. You are able to say to yourself, 'I lived through this horror. I can take the next thing that comes along. "- Eleanor Roosevelt.
One may define courage as approaching danger without fear. The idea of courage is a very beneficial element in literature. In almost every story, fiction and nonfiction alike, characters must face a challenge and possess courage to succeed with overcoming adversity. As an example, Jonas, the main character in Lois Lowry’s The Giver has to show courage to create change in his community. Furthermore, in Todd Strasser’s
Courage is shown through actions of people. Through the adventure of Roll of Thunder Hear my Cry, by, Mildred D.Taylor Cassie Logan shows a lot of courage by standing up for what's right. Cassie had courage when she had to stand up for her little brother, Little Man and then again during the fight with her rival Lillian Jean. Cassie showed that she can be sassy, she’s a very outspoken girl, and that she loved her friends and family. Even when equality meant nothing to everybody else but her, she still believed in it.
Bilbo’s Transformation/Maturation Some people say that people never change, while others believe that if given the chance, they will. In this case, J.R.R. Tolkien gives the character Bilbo Baggins the chance to change dramatically in his book The Hobbit. Bilbo undergoes many significant changes in his personality as a result of engaging in Gandalf's journey with the dwarves. The most important transformations include Bilbo going from cowardly to brave, from being ridiculed to respected and from being helpless to resourceful.
In the novel The Things They Carried, Tim O’Brien expresses to the reader why the men went to the war and continued to fight it. In the first chapter, “The Things They Carried,” O’Brien states “It was not courage, exactly; the object was not valor. Rather they were too frightened to be cowards.” The soldiers went to war not because they were courageous and ready to fight, but because they felt the need to go. They were afraid and coped with their lack of courage by telling stories (to themselves or aloud) and applied humor to the situations they encountered.
Along the way, they overcome many obstacles that threaten their lives and put their trust for one another to the test. Bilbo learns that there is more to him than he realizes and through hard work and dedication, he can accomplish almost anything. Overcoming these problems and learning more about himself helped Bilbo change from an ordinary, self-doubting hobbit into a clever, courage-filled, loyal hero. In the beginning, Bilbo has no desire to go on an adventure of any kind, but he quickly learns about the cleverness he obtains when he is forced to make quick decisions.
To children like Jem and Scout Finch, being courageous is completing a daredevil like task to impress others; however, as they grow up they learn what true courage is as they face situations where their courage is tested. They also witness an obstacle Atticus Finch overcomes that enhances their definition of courage. In the novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, Harper Lee distinguishes foolishness from real acts of courage through the experiences of Jem, Scout, and Atticus Finch. At the beginning of the novel, Jem and Scout believe courage is getting close to Boo Radley, a character whom has a reputation of stabbing his father in the leg with a pair of scissors and committing all of the small crimes in Maycomb. While Jem and Scout’s friend Dill
Courage is strength in the face of physical pain, hardship or death. It is also the choice and willingness to confront shame and personal loss. In Harper Lee's novel 'To Kill a Mockingbird', people demonstrate courage by standing up against prejudice, and overcoming their own loneliness and fears to live a good life. Mrs Dubose faces up to her morphine addiction. Atticus faces down the racism of the town.
Courage is Earned! Courage can't just be said it has to be shown. In the book Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry by Mildred Taylor, Mr. L.T. Morrision is the most brave, loyal, and kind person you will meet. Mr. Morrison showed courage by standing to the Wallaces, he moved Kaleb Wallace's car off the road, and when he stayed with the Logans even though he could get hurt Mr. Morrison’s actions proved that he knows what is right and he is going to stand up for that no matter what. Even though his parents were killed by whites, he stays calm and knows exactly how to deal with the situation.
Anyone can have courage. It can let people do what others could not do. In the novel, A Single Shard, Tree-ear shows courage. In the beginning, Tree-Ear, an orphan, does many things that would need courage.
