Race and inequality negatively affects our games in many different ways. Race and inequality affects many different people in all kinds of ways. It is sadly very often that players, sports owner's and coaches are brought into the line light because of racism. In the way of gift exchange, when the African Americans would participate in their JUJU dances, people would make racially discriminating comments about the players and their supporters. Racial discrimination has recently played a very big role in both life and sports. The past couple years in the United States have been surrounded around racial discrimination against African Americans. Racial comments have become public by individuals like coaches and owners, degrading African Americans.
In the article Hispanic Team Changes Small Town Attitudes, by William L. Holmes, many things stood out to me. First of all, I think the race of the players can matter, especially in this era we’re in. Some races, such as Hispanics, tend to have a bad reputation, in the article it referred to the people in the stands calling them stupid, and mocking Spanish accents, just because they were Hispanic. I think the race can matter a lot, especially if you live in an area, that’s predominately another race. This can cause many problems in a community, if not addressed right away.
Some argue that the rule is not comprehensive enough and only requires teams to interview minority candidates without guaranteeing that they will be hired (Moore & Levitt, 2018). Critics also contend that the rule is often seen as a box-checking exercise by teams, and the lack of diversity among team owners also plays a significant role in perpetuating systemic racism in the league (Neuman, 2022). Also, according to the case, there is a possibility of teams not complying with the rule or conducting token interviews to fulfill the requirement without serious consideration of minority candidates. It is true that there is still a considerable underrepresentation of minorities in positions of leadership given the quantity of minority head coaches who have plateaued in recent years. For instance, Brian Flores claimed in a lawsuit that the NFL is run like a plantation because of the stark disparity between the racial composition of the league's players—nearly 60% of whom are black—and that of club owners, administration, and coaching positions (Neuman, 2022).
he past 40 years have witnessed an increase of Asian athletes in American sports. In addition to their low population, earlier Asians lived in an era when racial discrimination and oppression impeded their access into sports (Zhao & Park, 2013). Asians had been discriminated against since the arrival of Chinese immigrants as cheap labor for the railroad and mining industries during the mid-1800s. This discrimination became more obvious during World War II when thousands of mostly Japanese Americans were forced out of their properties, separated from family and friends, and placed in internment camps. There they were subject to horrific living conditions, extreme deprivation and brutality.
In this day and age, many believe racism to be an issue of the past, when as a matter of fact, it is still frequently impacting peoples lives all around the globe. Unfortunately, many issues regarding racism occur in the sporting world. In Australia, it occurs most often in Australian Rules Football, or in the major competition, AFL (Australian Football League). It is a widely accepted idea that the players and spectators of a sport, rather than the sport itself have a direct impact of inducing racism within that particular sport. Relating to the AFL, the main offenders of racism are the spectators, who are commonly abusing players of different race to them.
When you play sports, you want to be able to relax and forget about all of your other stresses in life. Racism shouldn’t be involved in sports because it makes the sport not fun. If you are going to play sports, you want to have fun, and not worry about having a target on your back because you are black. Everyone needs to forget about all personal characteristics (such as race, religion, etc.) and have fun playing sports. Sports are to help people learn how to live their life.
There have been as many major race riots in the past two years as in the previous 46. These movies, 42, Remember the Titans, Glory Road and The Express all were made since the beginning of the 21st century and depict people overcoming racist cultures. It is possible that this shift in movies which focus on overcoming racial barriers has had some impact on people wanting to stand up to racism. Pop culture and media have an enormous impact on people and are central to racial awareness. These sport films represent a part of the change in pop culture.
Turning on a hockey game and seeing mostly white players is an ongoing trend for hockey fanatics around the country. The NHL has been evidently dominated by white athletes since the league began in 1964, and this dominance has flowed into the present. A lack of opportunity for non-white children and the high economical demands of the sport have definitely played a role in this issue. That is why “Blacks on skates are still a rare sight: in the NHL’s nearly 100-year history, there have been just over 70 black players”(Whiting). The sport of hockey has been inherently deemed a “white” sport which seems to reinforce the stereotype of white dominance in the NHL, leading to the continual of this issue.
How can we call ourselves a nation that is trying to prevent racism and discrimination when we still have a racist sports name, which was invented in a very low and racial time for our long native people? Discriminating them and basically stalking the Native Americans of their rough history, this name is in every way disrespectful and filled with disgust. This name was invented when there were social policies to eliminate Native American tribes and Civilization Regulations, which banned and outlawed their traditions. How is this name not offensive and how was it meant out of respect? The Redskins are hated by so many organizations, like the NCAI, other tribes, Civil Rights organizations, school boards and even public officials that there is no way they can get away with the name “Redskins”.
For years there has always been inequality towards female athletes compared to men. College and professional sports continue to provide unequal funding, advertising, and pay for women. Typically men are payed more for playing the exact same sport a woman .In return women receive a less amount of pay. Could this be due to how majority of society sees women.
Racism has been an issue that has been quite prevalent throughout American history, unfortunately. Behaviors that damagingly influence the outlook of a race on other individuals have not only been dominant in American societies but sports also. Student-athletes are pitted against one another every day because of racial remarks not only from participants of the competition but crowds. Although with how shifting the nation's society is today it would be assumed that issues like this would not occur as often, epically in student environments. Regrettably, this research demonstrated that racism is still much present.
Stereotypes, or the oversimplified notions that one may have regarding certain groups of individuals is embedded in American culture. One of the main contributors of these ideas has been the media. This has become quite evident specially in sports. The idea that black men are naturally better athletes than white men, or conversely speaking, that white men are smarter and more disciplined athletes than black men is a perfect example of a stereotype that exists in American sports.
The social issue is addressed by the idea professional African American athletes should promote
In the sporting world, race is a widely discussed topic that frequently comes up. In today’s society creating an equal playing field and environment for athletes of all races is essential for the success of a sport. Based
Gender Inequality in sports is an issue as old as sport itself. I choose this topic because we as a society seem to sweep it under the rug time after time. Women in sports however, try to address the issue only to have it go on deaf ears, leaving them to continue in the sport hoping something will change. Over the last few decades, strides have been made, but he sport remains an institution dominated by men. These women, whether they are in sport or in the business world, want a fair chance to be on the same level as their male counterparts.
“Female discrimination in sports is a common occurrence all around the world, women are seen as less than males.” (Ladrea) Equality in sports is unequal. In the 1800 women got very little attention and did not get the opportunity to play in any sport in America and all around the world. Men could go and try out for different sports teams and workout but for women they were only allowed to stay home to cook and clean. There were some events women could participate in but it could not be competitive, it was focused on getting active and staying active.
