Latin America is an ethnically and racially diverse region, and this diversity is made visible through the multiplicity of cultural expressions and different ways of living of its citizens. However, the Latin American societies were influenced by hegemonic racial ideologies that created social structures and diminished the way in which indigenous populations in Afro-descendant populations are represented in recognized in the region.
One of the mechanisms through which racial ideologies manifest and reproduce is the media, which over the decades have served as a space for the reproduction of images and representations about ethnic and racial diversity and ethnic populations several. The exotification of Dolores del Rio is evident in an article published by a Photoplay issue in 1934, as she is described as possessing “golden skin, smooth as mellowed ivory and her dark, flashing eyes bespoke the lue of those maidenly ‘senoritas’ who peep at life from behind cloistered shutters… When the young man comes to call on a senorita in Mexico… he brings his guitar” (38). Through the exotification of Dolores del Rio, Hollywood found great success in the United States and in Latin America, one of the most profitable film markets in the cinematic industry. As a white-passing Latinx woman, del Rio was “more easily able to move in and out of ethnic roles” (33). In the book, National Colors: Racial Classification and the State in Latin America, author Mara Loveman examines the history of racial classification in Latin American nations, through the use of census records. There are three main questions that the author works to answer throughout the book. The first, is why did these nations historically classify populations by their race? Why did they eventually decide to stop using this method for some time and why was it brought back? The author also looks at the different ways these nations are influenced by other nations, and how this affects the recording of these populations over time.

Everlena Goddard Latin Anti-Blackness is a very real and extremely under discussed topic that is affecting millions of Latin people today. This disguised and rarely talked about topic is the practice of discrimination and prejudice against dark skinned, mixed race or non predominantly white Latinxs by other Latinx people. This distressing treatment of Latin(o)(a)s is not only a national issue, it is a global one as well. This issue is ongoing and was and has always been apparent yet unidentified and unaddressed. To rid the Latin community of this ingrained racism we need to call attention to this topic.

The Bronze Screen introduced both positive and negative portrayals of Latinas and Latinos in film. While there are plenty of positive Latino roles in films, Latinos and Latinas should be included in more positive roles because the negative roles Latinos have in films cause negative stereotypes. Positive and negative representations of Latinos in films has always fluctuated throughout history, however the more negative ones seem to always overpower the good ones. The film, “The Bronze Screen”, gave many examples of the negative roles Latinos played in films throughout film history. Early films included Latino actors, however they did not always have a lead role or even a positive one.
Las Vegas is where I was born and raised. That doesn’t mean that I just gave up on my Mexican culture. Like many others, I have a culture that is both American and Mexican. My culture has shaped my values, perceptions, and behaviors. The culture of my family, community, and society has made who I am as a person in numerous ways.
To what extent has the media shaped our perception of certain ethnic groups? Media has always played a vital role in the way that people shape their opinions on certain ethnic groups. If people are shown the same image of a specific ethnic group over and over again they will eventually begin to believe it. In the article The Myth of the Latin Woman: I Met a Girl Named Maria Judith Ortiz tackles and debunks one of these misconceptions created by the media and society that latina women are promiscuous and dumb. Throughout her life Ortiz is faced with the misconception of being promiscuous and dumb, but is able to overcome that educating people on the reality of latina women through her poetry.

Injustice and unfair treatment could not be erased from the world easily. Just like the situation described by John Steinbeck, the immigrants faced injustice. But there are too many injustices that even worse in the world.

The relationship between race and racism is due to the fact that there are racial categories created, in order for particular social groups to be on top of the hierarchy. For example, the white group, which is on top of this racial hierarchy, established the notion of race in order to benefit themselves, which has led to racism among other minority groups. The ideology of a group being superior than others leads to racism. Ultimately, race is the product of racism, and racism is not the product of race (25).

Introduction The concept of identity has been a notion of significant interest not just to sociologists and psychologists, but also to individuals found in a social context of perpetually trying to define themselves. Often times, identities are given to individuals based on their social status within a certain community, after the assessment of predominant characteristics that said individual has. This chapter explains the difference between race and ethnicity and how they came about. It also explains the advantages and disadvantages some have due to the creation of race. Race and ethnicity have strong foundations not only within countries, but between them. Globalization has increased the individual’s ethnic identities, but has also put some at disadvantages. Having different races and ethnicities is not an issue, but ranking the different races and putting others at disadvantages creates issues.
