Race & Ethnicity in Kuwait
Introduction:
Although it seems that different racial and ethnic groups in Kuwait are harmonious, there is discrimination based on race and ethnicity in daily life and in work. In many instances some groups attain advantages over others by reason of their ethical or racial differences. The construction of hierarchy concerning racial or ethnic differences in Kuwait occurs for multiple reasons, but a principle motivator is often social, political, or economic power. Several classifications of ethnic and racial groups exist in Kuwait, including Kuwaitis and Non–Kuwaitis. These hierarchical classifications are then used to create, expand, or maintain domination or supremacy of a group over others. Racial and ethnic study of Kuwaiti society reveals that there is a prevalent discrimination among different groups living or residing in Kuwait.
The State of Kuwait:
Kuwait is located in the northeast part of Saudi Arabia at the northern end of the Persian Gulf, south of Iraq. Kuwait falls under the category of a Constitutional Monarchy, governed by the al-Sabah family. Oil was discovered in Kuwait in the 1930s, and established to have 20% of the world 's known oil resources (Dinkhan & Dakhli, 2009). It has been the world 's second-biggest oil exporter since 1946.
