Racial Tension Between Police And African-American Citizens

Introduction Michael Brown was an 18 year old African American man who was a suspect in a strong- arm robbery in Ferguson, Missouri. He was shot and killed on August 9th, 2014, by a man named Darren Wilson, a police officer with the local Ferguson, Missouri Police Department. The incident took place just a few miles from a convenience warehouse, where Darren had received a call pertaining to the actions of Michael Brown. Brown, the suspect, was as well accompanied by his friend Dorian Johnson at the time of the fatal incident who was 22 years old.

According to the National Institute of Justice, there are 6.6 complaints per 100 police officers on the excessive force. However, 8 percent of these claims had real concrete evidence to back up their story to take disciplinary action against the police officer ("Police Use Of Force | National Institute Of Justice"). This is the most controversial issue that is happening in America right now. We see a lot of police officers use excessive force on innocent civilians too much. It happens everywhere in the United States, it will show up on the news, local news, newspapers and most importantly in social media.

The state of South Carolina has followed the nation’s trend of increasing police brutality against minority groups. African Americans are the most targeted minority for police brutality. The first official slave patrol was formed in South Carolina and was a prelude to the modern police department. The fact that modern police departments has its roots in what was a racist practice of monitoring and beating African American slaves into submission or preventing the escape of slaves from their white owners it is not a stretch for a modern South Carolinian police department to have retained a racist attitude.

From early studies of police departments and law enforcement agencies, their culture is described as authoritarian, cynical, distrustful, elitist, homogeneous, macho, misogynist, monolithic, pessimistic, suspicious, insular, socially isolated and highly resistant to change. Relationships between police officers and the communities they are sworn to protect and serve is often times tense and difficult to maneuver. Police departments can implement an effective mechanism for change as "fish rot from the head first. "

In one of your most famous speeches, “I Have a Dream” I realized that you addressed many important issues. One being that people still look at African Americans as lost causes.

Police officers are entitled to care and protect the citizens of the country? In recent news, white male police officers have corrupted their use of power and used unnecessary, excessive force against African American males. Police brutality with African Americans resulted in the Walter Scott case, Michael Brown case, Trayvon Martin Case, and Eric Garner case. The following cases are referred to as racist to the public because of white male police officers are doing avoidable acts to African American males. The justifications induced rioting and protesting in the community of the African American males.

Also, there was the John Crawford accident in 2014 who was on the phone with his mother of his kids when he was shot and killed by police for being suspected as a dangerous shooter. These incidents have led to very damaging riots like the one in Ferguson, Missouri because Michael Brown was shot and killed after bullying a store clerk. A much more recent episode of rioting took place in Baltimore, Maryland after the death of Freddie Gray who was manhandled and not given medical assistance after being brutalized. During one account where an officer attacked a black man, the department stated that it had nothing to do with race but the man feels differently. Across the nation and all over social media many have given their opinions about these issues with the majority saying that the government really needs to step in and help the situation.

This report is showing light to the communities’ response to police brutality particularly in the black communities and also their encounters with police officers. Police brutality is physical violence and great cruelty demonstrated by a police officer. Police brutality and misconduct have existed for many decades and it even has been broadcasted in news stories over America, but nothing has changed. It has happened predominantly to African Americans in lower-income states. Police officers are given slaps on the wrist for taking a life or injuring an innocent person.

People pick the side that either defends or criticize police officers use of force. However, the people do not realize that this topic is plainly ridiculous and dangerous. This issue will not only hurt both sides, but also harm innocent civilians as well. In some of Americas society, the African Americans are viewing our police officers as terrible people or as racist. They see them playing favors towards the whites and just doing everything they can to target the blacks. They view at it from a child 's point of view. They are viewing it as the majority of people are out to get them. Police officers are going to arrest and do what they are compelled to do, regardless of color.

Police violence on African American males in the U.S. has only seemed to have increased in the past years in this country and researchers wanted to see the type of impact it has had in these African American communities. The study mainly focused on the beating of Frank Jude in the Milwaukee area but also analyzed the impact of three other beatings and how phone calls to 911 were affected. If calls to 911 are suppressed because of these shootings in these communities then it is putting the entire public in danger. One common opinion is that officers should not use more force than is necessary or reasonable, and even then, that force should be used only as a last resort. “Police use force to affect civilians’ conduct. On a day-to-day basis, they do so most often by employing the least degree of force available to them, their mere presence. Cops wear uniforms and drive distinctly marked cars so that, without saying a word, they may have an effect on citizens’ behavior” (Fyfe, 38). When an officer’s presence fails to fulfill the desired conduct, the next course of action for said officer would be verbalization.

Cops around the United States have been accused of racially profiling black people. This topic has been brought up by everyone around the U.S. and is very controversial. Studies have shown that the majority of deaths by police officers have been people of opposite color in America. Police brutality in America is a growing epidemic that has shown no signs of slowing down. Innocent men, women, and even children have been killed by police officers for no reason.

Police racism is a very big problem in America. The killings of Eric Garner, Michael Brown, and Walter Scott are other examples of police racism and brutality as well. Reasons behind police racism and brutality are simple. People still have a certain way that they think about people of color.
