The Effects of Racism “No one is born hating another person because of the colour of the skin, or his background, or his religion. People must learn to hate, and if they can learn to hate, they can be taught to love, for love comes more naturally to the human heart than its opposite.” Agree or not with the words of the great Nelson Mandela, this quote truly defines that racism does not occurs naturally or already exists in the society but rather chose to be acted by the people. Racism is really hurting people in the society and a stop to it would make a friendly and better environment. Racism creates huge destruction to individuals. However, racism can even create division in the society. Racism really tears down the friendly society. Communities, students and staffs in work place can be separated because of racism. In the United States for example, credit to the mighty Rosa Parks who took a stand against racism. According to the Wikipedia article, it stated that on December 1, 1995 a coloured lady by the name of Rosa Parks did not her seat in the coloured section to a white passenger after the white section was filled. What we can deduce is that the bus is sectioned for the coloured and white people. This shows how racism creates a great division among the people in the society. This may have taken place years ago but it is still seen in the society. From my personal experience in the Belizean society especially, I take public transportation almost every time especially travelling from a rural village going to high school. I can remember at my first year of high school, we had to share bus with several students from different villages. The seats were always for the Creole and Garifuna students. Not be racist but rather honest, I believe ‘some’ coloured people are still racist in Belize. I can say this because from my experience. The Maya culture especially tends to be scared by the coloured individuals. This maybe not common throughout Belize, but in some places it still takes place especially in the Toledo district.
