Racism formed many years ago, but it is still occurring in the world today. The dictionary defines the word racism as “prejudice, discrimination, or antagonism directed against someone of a different race based on the belief that one’s own race is superior.” This demoralizing type of hate causes conflict between the two parties in disagreement. Racism can be very violent whether it is in the actions demonstrated by a certain group or verbal abuse by a particular race. Many different groups have been racially attacked, but African-Americans, Chinese/Japanese Americans, and Native Americans have been plagued with racism for a long time. The first racially affected class of people were the African-Americans. African-Americans have faced hardships …show more content…
The Native Americans were in North America far before the first settlers arrived. After settling in the New World, there was a numerous amount of conflicts between the settlers and the Native Americans. Eventually the two groups made peace with one another for a period of time. When Andrew Jackson became president feud also came in between the Native Americans and the Americans. President Jackson took land from the Native Americans, which was a problem because the Indians had sacred lands which was being stripped by the U.S. government. After several attempts to make peace with the Americans, the Indians finally began to fight back. With the fighting in place many casualties occurred, but every Native American loss resulted in the loss of their homeland. After a while the Indians finally surrendered and lost most of their holy lands. The American Government then started to place the different tribes in reservations. A reservation was a bounded amount of land granted to the Native Americans by the Government. During the presidency of Andrew Jackson, a famous walk called “the trail of tears” took place. The trail of tears consisted of the Seminole tribe in Florida was forcefully removed from their villages, and then escorted by soldiers to a reservation west of the Mississippi River. The thing is that they made all the Indians travel by foot so they walked for thousands of miles to suffering
Before the 1860’s the native americans were living in peace until the Colonists attacked. The Western Expansion of 1860-90 greatly affected the lives of Native Americans, due to the powerful role
Even the soldiers escorting them felt bad for them, but they had to follow orders. Native Americans had long lived in settlements stretching from Georgia to Mississippi. However, President Jackson and other political leaders wanted to open this land to settlement by American farmers. Under pressure from Jackson, Congress passed the Indian Removal Act. Congress then established Indian Territory (land in what is now Oklahoma) and planned to move Native Americans there.
In the late 1800’s the United States was a young nation. That wanted to expand it’s boarder ’s so they headed west. This began the great “Westward Expansion”.
First off many conflicts happened because of the social tension between the Native Americans and the White Americans. For example according to Document E “Perspectives of the Natives and Whites” Santana the Chief of the Kiowas said, “A long time ago this land belonged to our fathers; but when I go up to the river I see camps of soldiers here on its bank. These soldiers cut down my timber; they kill my buffalo; and when I see that, my heart feels like bursting; I feel sorry.” This tells you that because of the White Americans the Natives and the land has suffered seeing as how the White Americans kicked the Natives off of their land and destroyed the land by cutting down trees and killing buffaloes which affects the ecosystem. Things like this forced the Native Americans to try to negotiate with the Supreme Court and the Supreme Court ruled in their favor.
The Trail of Tears event of the removal of the Indians happened in 1838. “At the beginning of the 1830s, nearly 125,000 Native Americans lived on millions of acres of land in Georgia, Tennessee, Alabama, North Carolina and Florida–land their ancestors had occupied and cultivated for generations. ”(History.com Staff). In this event, the Cherokee community of Native Americans was forced by the US government to move from their native home in the Southern part of the contemporary America to what is known as the Indian territories in Oklahoma. Arguments over land, restrictions, and laws were common amongst the Indians and settlers/whites.
Prior to the English landing on the Eastern shores in 1607 of what is now known as the United States of America, Native Americans dominated areas from coast to coast [of the future nation]. Many of these tribes had built their own form of society, influenced by maternal dominance, agriculture, fishing, hunting, trade, and religion (Foner, Chapter 1).Unfortunately, their way of life was altered as soon as Europeans began emigrating and landing on the Americas, and began taking over the land Native Americans had possessed for centuries. Although weakened by a wave of disease, many tribes showed acts of resistance against their invaders, in disputes like the Pueblo Revolt, King Philip 's’ War, and Worcester v. Georgia. These acts of resistance
Systemic Racism in the United States Many individuals today have different point of views on how the United States of America became what it is today. For instance, point of views such as how society learned to function the way it does, the law and order in place, and ultimately, how circumstances have developed throughout history. Unfortunately, institutional/institutionalized racism, also known as systemic racism is also a concept that has settled and is grown to be quite predominant in the United States all through times past. Systemic racism continues to take place in settings such as banks, courts of law, government organizations, school systems, and the like.
More conflict arose because the government didn’t stop coal miners from entering and mining on the sacred and sustainable lands of the indians, disregarding the treaty. Although the government attempted to buy the lands, the Sioux were reluctant in giving sacred lands to greedy miners moving westward. Rather than keeping peace as the treaties were intended to, they caused more conflict amongst the settlers and
Some Native Americans wanted to stay and fight for their land and others wanted to leave for money. The Cherokee wanted to stay in their lands so they decided to stay. The Chief John Ross of the Cherokee tribe resisted to leave until the end. Then soldiers came and forcefully made them leave their land and were held at gunpoint. The Indians had to walk thousands of miles.
After imposing political and military action on urging the Native American Indians from the southern states of America, President Andrew Jackson decided it was time to enact the Indian Removal Act of 1830. The Indian Removal act of 1830 proclaimed that all Native Americans living east of the Mississippi River were to be forced to move west of the Mississippi River where the region of the Louisiana Purchase remained. This land set aside for these Native Americans was known as the “Indian colonization zone”. Because some of the Indian tribes refused to leave their homelands, “As a result, wars broke about between the U.S. Government and Indian Tribes”(xbox360). The Indian Removal Act was originally created to have the Native Americans vacate
When America was discovered and colonized, the indigenous peoples faced real hardships. Americans disliked anything that wasn’t European culture so they tried to eliminate tribal identities and assimilate the Native Americans into their culture. They outlawed certain Indian rituals such as the Ghost Dance and forced Indian children to speak English instead of their native languages. The constitution did not outline specific details for relations with Natives, so as America grew older, the government was left to deal with the Indians however they pleased.
A problem I would like to solve is the prevalent racial inequality in the United States today. African Americans and Hispanics are the most underserved racial groups in American society. About 45% of African Americans and 46% of Hispanics live in episodic poverty (defined as poverty lasting less than three years). Over 15% of African Americans are unemployed, and they make up 40% of the prison population in America. This is a shocking statistic, as only 13% of the United States ' population is African American.
Racism is a part of American history that can never be forgotten; a dark past that shows the constant mistreatment of African-Americans. Although African-Americans were freed from slavery in the 1860’s, discrimination continues to be seen today. Racism is defined as prejudice, discrimination, or antagonism directed against someone of a different race based on the belief that one 's own race is superior. The white supremacy woven into mainstream American culture led to the continued widespread exclusion of African-Americans.
Racism: a curse for the society INTRODUCTION:- "Racism is an ideology that gives expression to myths about other racial and ethnic groups that devalues and renders inferior those groups that reflects and is perpetuated by deeply rooted historical, social, cultural and power inequalities in society." Racism is one of the oldest truth around the world .Racism, is said to be as old as the human society. Racism is nothing but only the belief that all members of each race possess the characteristics, abilities, or qualities which are specific to that race, especially, so as to distinguish it as inferior or superior to another race or races. And this differentiation change the people’s mentality and bring death among themselves.
Racism has always existed with humans. Racism is treating someone differently of unfairly simply because they belong to a different ethnic community of have a different religion or nationality. When someone believes their race is better than another and feels superior ro other people because of his of her race, is called racism. Throughout time, many people have lost their lives, or lost their families and children, and are left without homes due to racism. Racism causes wars, which could destroy humanity ultimately.
