The people of montgomery were under segregation. Colored people had to use signs that said for colored like bathrooms, water fountains, restaurants, schools, car dealerships and places like that. The Same applied to the white folks except they like that law because they did not want to be near the colored folks. The KKK & The NAACP The Ku Klux Klan is a terrorist group that burned down black people 's homes and churches even schools the people were afraid of the members of the KKK the people would put sheets with holes over there eyes to nobody would see their faces and they would walk around with torches and set things on fire. The NAACP stood for National association for the advancement of colored people Rosa also thought it was unfair that if a white man beat a black man he only needed to pay a fine of 24 dollars.
The police there kill black people with little consequences thinking they are black so they must have done something wrong. These black people are given the blame more than white even though they are completely innocent. Also, police kill lots of refugees at the border with mexico which are innocent
As the court case is coming up and going on the racism gets out of control. Atticus knows that the town will hate him for defending Tom Robinson, a black man accused of raping a white woman. But Atticus simply doesn 't care, he will defend any person of any skin color because that 's the kind of person he is. Atticus is a man of high values and loves everyone equally. To back him up, take this quote for example.
They do everything in favor of the “black folks”. Each time a colored person is “wrongly accused” or “killed for no reason”, this group takes to the media and protests to make it seem as so. The purpose is to help the black man no longer be oppressed. (Black Lives Matter) Although, by them assuming that the white man is out for vengeance, and that every white man is racist towards the blacks, it turns the tables and makes the African Americans look like the prejudice group. Groups like this are fighting racism with racism, which is not a sufficient way to get rid of the problem.
However, Tom Robinson is no match for the iron grasp racism has on the southern United States. In the novel To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, racial prejudice leads to the unfair treatment of Tom Robinson during his court case and after his death. During the trial of Tom Robinson, racial prejudice and stereotyping lead to unfair bias amongst the jury, ultimately resulting in a wrongful conviction. Tom Robinson, a black man, is on trial for rape. He has a very good chance of winning the trial because the prosecution "has not produced…medical evidence…that the crime…took place" (Lee 271).
African Americans should not have to be scared to go outside any day thinking they might not make it home. African Americans feel targeted in today’s society because so many innocent African Americans are being incarcerated, shot, and killed. Since 2001, it is 6.1 times likelier to be incarcerated as a black man than a white man. This is all because of skin color. Black Lives Matter (BLM) was a group created to raise awareness for the heinous acts the have presented itself to the black community
Bob Ewell is an example of following the crowd, meaning he knew the truth but preferred to have a innocent man killed because of the color of his skin. Mr.Ewell states “ I seen that black nigger yonder ruttin’ on my Mayella”(Lee 231)! Almost the whole town believes that he is guilty just because he’s black. Mr.Ewell has now brought more attention to his color and is going with the crowd. Today following the crowd still exist but is under a new name called peer pressure.
As he makes his statement this calms down the other cops who are about to shoot him because he is black and speaking angrily, the irony occurs later in the movie with the same liberal cop picks up a younger black man but end up shooting the young black male because he made a move reaching inside of his coat thinking that he was making a threaten move but after he shot him he realized the young black man did not have a gun he had the same Jesus piece. The liberal cop went from a person who believed racism is wrong and viewed people the same to end up killing a young man base on his race and his threatening
During the Jim Crow Era, whites and the police would brutalize those blacks that were attending the rallies. The Black Panthers continued to fight back. Malcolm X stated in a one of his famous speeches that "the time has come to fight back in self-defense whenever the black man is being unjustly and unlawfully attacked (“The Black Panther Party Fights for Equality.” 123helpme.com 22 Apr 2016
When there is a news story about police brutality on black people, there are people that say that the cops are innocent and should not be held accountable for murder (Greene32). When someone is killed by another person it is murder no matter what unless if it is in self defense, but a lot of the murders of black people by cops are for no reason. We hear stories about how an officer has shot and killed black male after pulling them over and saying that it was in self defense to shoot, but what they do not tell you or show is that the man was just stepping out of his car and had his hands up. Another opposition is that it is not discrimination. When cops are accused of discrimination against blacks people there will always be people
Five police officers ambushed by a sniper and two black men shot by police during a supposedly peaceful protest. This protest quickly got out of hand because of the violence and threatening protest. Killing police for the rights of the black community was or should have never been a part of the plan. Now that police officers have been killed, this gives the police a greater reason and law enforcement to fear us and another reason for us to take caution. According to USA Today, Dallas Police Chief David Brown had a simple, prayerful message: “All I know is this must stop ... this divisiveness between our police and our citizens.” One must agree for us to work as a nation, law enforcement and the people they are protecting must come to a total
Mr. Gilmer would have said it’s the jury duty to convict Tom Robinson for what he has done. That Mayella will never know peace until Tom is hung for his crimes. That with Tom running free no women would be safe. He would want to play up the stereotypes of savage black man that can’t be trusted with white women, because that would hit home with the men on the jury. This tact Mr. Glimer hopes to distract them from the lack of facts.
Police brutality was rampant and so the BPP stepped up when no one would protect them. The BPP created a self-titled newspaper in 1967 that called for Blacks to “protest the police killing of Denzil Dowell, who was shot while allegedly running from a stolen car” (Foner, xi). Panther members would patrol their neighborhoods armed so when the police pulled someone over they would watch what happened and they were prepared to fight back if the police officer overstepped his boundaries. The Panther members learned about California law so they could know their rights. If members knew their rights then it was harder for the police to take advantage of Blacks.
