Wilhelm Rontger, a German professor gave a lecture in 1896 over a new kind of ray that he called the “X-Ray”. After it was released to the public it started being used as a treatment for cancer. In the 20th century, not long after the new treatment was being used. It was discovered that radiation was not only an aid to a cure but could also cause cancer itself (Evolution).
People have multiple options for cancer treatment. Such as surgery, immunotherapy, and common chemotherapy. However, radiation therapy is used to target masses and tumors. There are pros and cons that come along with radiation, like all types of treatment.

One of the advancements that were made was the mobilization of the X-ray machine. Prior to the war X-ray machines were stationary and could not be taken into the field, but with the war more and more soldiers were getting injured and in need of medical attention. This prompted scientists, such as Marie Curie, to mobilize the X-ray machine. Another advancement in the medical field was the use wide spread use of blood transfusions. A few years before the war scientists discovered that there were different types of blood and that not all of them are compatible.
For example, in 1921, Insulin was discovered at the University of Toronto, by Frederick Banting and Charles Best. Insulin was a treatment for those suffering with diabetes. Although Insulin couldn’t save patients from diabetes completely, it gave patients a few more years to live as indicated by Leonard Thompson. He was the first patient to receive a dose of insulin, and this resulted in his high blood glucose levels dropping to normal levels (American Diabetes Association, 2019). Their great discovery led them to win the Nobel Prize in medicine.

Radiation therapy is often used with chemotherapy and is performed before an operation. Radiation therapy is helpful for people with bone cancer that cannot be removed with surgery. It can also be used after surgery to kill off any remaining cancer cells(Bone Cancer - Symptoms and causes). In conclusion, bone cancer is a serious disease that has many different types, variants, and treatment options.
I know a career in radiation therapy would be the best fit for me. I struggled deciding on a path for myself after high school. I wanted a career in which I could help others in a meaningful way, work in a team, and maximize my learning potential. Patient care seemed like the best area for me, and once I did my first shadow in radiation therapy, I knew it was what I wanted to do. I have done about 21 hours of observation, and in that little time, I learned so much and saw how much of a difference this department makes in people's lives.

Radiotherapy negatively affects society in many different ways. One way is the fact that the use of radiotherapy may result with the side effects of a change in appearance. This includes bruises and reddening of the skin. This may result in the patients not being comfortable with themselves as they stand out against the rest of society and they might look at this in a negative perspective. Patients start becoming self-conscious about themselves, so they don’t go out as often and they socialize less.
Psychosocial Advances in Oncology Research and Practice In the 1800’s, a cancer diagnosis was viewed as the equivalent of death (Holland, 2002). In this day and age, there was no known cause or cure, and it was considered inhumane to reveal the diagnosis to the patient. In a constantly changing and advancing society, this ideology was transformed as the result of an accumulation of technological advances, education, and research initiative. This led to the acceptance of the notion of cancer worldwide.
After reading a few articles and doing some research on my own I have reached a valid argument to explain a few reasons why preventative measures need to be taken. In this essay I will first explain how radiation is bad for you skin and why we need to take these measures to fight for our lives. Then I will help educate you on how we can add a few things to our daily routines so we can stay healthier and happier in our everyday life.
