Rainsford And General Zaroff In Richard Connell's The Most Dangerous Game

Life maybe for the strong, but it can also be for the clever. Originator of the short story, “The Most Dangerous Game,” is Richard Connell. In 1924, Connell created the main characters Sanger Rainsford and General Zaroff. The two of them love to hunt, but the prey is bilaterality different things. General Zaroff and Sanger Rainsford share the same circumstance of hunting but perceive it differently because of their upbringing, morals values and military background.

Tanner Toussaint In the short story The Most Dangerous Game by Richard Connell, Rainsford is justified in killing General Zaroff. One of the reasons why Rainsford is justified in killing General Zaroff is on the island the only way to live is to hunt or to be the one being hunted. Secondly, Rainsford is justified in killing General Zaroff because Zaroff wanted to die. Lastly, Rainsford is justified in killing General Zaroff because killing Zaroff is going to be the only way Rainsford will escape the island from a psychopath.

In Richard Connell’s “The Most Dangerous Game,” Sanger Rainsford is forced to test his survival skills while he is intensely hunted by an experienced war general named General Zaroff. In this story, Rainsford exhibits some very helpful characteristics like his resourcefulness, his strategic planning, and his ability to reason. As a result of Rainsford’s questioning the validity of General Zaroff’s hunting methods, he ended up playing in the game. Although I believe Rainsford is a very helpful, interesting, and dynamic character, at the end of the story, he must give up his own personal morals to win the game.

Both authors develop the theme, the Decision of Fate, in “The Most Dangerous Game” & “The Lady or The Tiger”. At one point in “The Most Dangerous Game” Rainsford’s fate was in General Zaroff hands. On page 25 it state, “ The first thing Rainsford’s eves discerned was the largest man he’d ever seen- a gigantic creature, solidly made & black- bearded to the waist.

Hunting is a game where you can have fun killing a certain type of animal, but could be very dangerous at the same time. In “The Most Dangerous Game” Rainsford is a character that is a very good hunter. So one day him and his buddy's went out on a yacht and went out on the sea to go to the caribbean to look for this island to hunt Jaguars. But while on a yacht he feel of the boat and fell into the sea. Moving on he was on this Island and met this General. Which liked to me called General Zaroff. Moving on in the story the general like to hunt as well but he liked to hunt humans. So Rainsford was being hunted. Rainsford had to create traps and all types of strategies to beat the general. “The Most Dangerous Game,” by Richard Connell, is a narrative about Mr. Sanger Rainsford, a celebrated hunter, who finds himself on a secluded island after falling overboard a yacht. Rainsford locates a large building on the island and meets General Zaroff, who invites him to rest and replenish his health in his home. After Zaroff explains that he also enjoys hunting, he also reveals that he has discovered a new, more dangerous animal to hunt: humans. Zaroff forces Rainsford to become the hunted in order to win his freedom and return to the mainland. Connell’s central idea suggests that instinct does not always yield to reason.

Comparing and Contrasting: ‘The Most Dangerous Game’ The short story and film version of The Most Dangerous Game contain both similarities and differences. There are always going to be changes form book to movie no matter what. The plot of both of these is the same though; A man is lost on an island and meets General Zaroff. The man is very fortunate at the time because General Zaroff is welcoming.

Before Rainsford entered the “Dangerous Game,” General Zaroff, the owner of the island, tried to persuade Rainsford to believe that killing humans is not murder. The General was explaining to Rainsford that he had invented a new animal to hunt, a animal that can reason, make hunting last longer and more interesting, humans. Rainsford couldn’t help but to speak; “‘Hunting? Good God, General Zaroff, what you speak of is murder’” (Connell 27). Rainsford disagrees with Zaroff, he thinks that his irrational explanation is not good enough to explain why he’s taking human lives for fun. Minutes later, Zaroff talks about war, he compares it to murder. The General tells Rainsford that he “‘surely [has] experienc[ed]...war,’” Rainsford cuts him off,

In the story The Most Dangerous Game By Richard Connell, the antagonist, General Zaroff, has a very distinct personality which can be observed by the descriptions of his appearance. One aspect of Zaroff's appearance is that he appears to be a very handsome man. That conveys a sense of class and kindness that makes him appear as a gentleman. in the text we see that when it describes that, “Rainsford's first impression was that the man was singularly handsome.” The second aspect of General Zaroff’s appearance that helps us understand his character is that he has bold, authoritative features similar to the ones of someone in the military.
