“If a man does not keep pace with his companions, perhaps it is because he bears a different drummer. Let him step to the music he hears, however measured or far away” strikes the heart of the individualistic belief in transcendentalism. Thoreau speculates that if a person is non-conformist the reason may be that the person holds different values and beliefs and is acting in accordance to their own conscience rather than society’s. This is also a warning along with explanation that these people should not be forced to conform but rather allow them to continue to follow their beliefs even if you do not understand it or if it radically different. Ralph Waldo Emerson reiterates this precept of individualism in his line, “Do not go where the path may lead, go instead where there is no path and leave a trail.” The theme of individuality is paramount to the transcendentalism. …show more content…
Following your heart and taking risk at times when society may convince otherwise can lead to unexpected achievements. Steve Jobs is a perfect example of someone who received success from the uniqueness novelty of his ideas despite being called a lunatic in the beginning and event now. This quote although is inspirational is not practical and is only true in exceptional circumstances. It is idealistic to follow your dreams and pursue the career path that you want for an example whereas someone may want to be an artist it is not practical – there is a reason for the term “starving artist”. Only the best can even attempt to go to art school and in the end there is not guarantee the public and critics will appreciate the
"I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived.”- Henry David Thoreau. Transcendentalism is an American philosophy that revolves around self-reliance and independence, commonly in nature, a Transcendentalist wants to find the true meaning in life. I believe that Chris McCandless was a Transcendentalist because he was able to leave his whole life behind and take on a minimalist lifestyle while having a strong relationship with god. However, I believe that I am not a Transcendentalist, but simply an adventurer.
Oscar Wilde once said, “To live is the rarest thing in the world. Most people exist, that is all.” Wilde’s quote is describing, in whole, the laborious idea of transcendentalism. Transcendentalism is a simple way of living life that promotes reducing the dependence on property, self expression, and the goodness of human and respect for other beauty. Starring in the book Into the Wild, Chris McCandless shows many examples of transcendentalism through his simple lifestyle.
In the Piece “Self-reliance” written by Ralph Waldo Emerson, one of the most influential writers in America, speaking to the individual about being true to who people are, and not who society expects people to be. He explores the concept that greatness is achieved by rising above the average person; making one’s thoughts extraordinary, instead of just ordinary. He uses strategies such as metaphors, personification, syntax, and more, to shine a light on his purposeful perspective. Emerson applies divine figurative language to express the importance of being who people are when he remarks, “Always the soul hears an admonition in such lines […]” (1) Here he is depicting the image that people are supposed to listen to their hearts and souls, because that is their direction. Warning and counsel comes from within, and listening to that voice is what distinguishes an ordinary person, from an extraordinary one, taking that leap from society, and into the life of the individual, where people listen to
Thoreau’s life was full of independent spirit. He tried to live by his own values, rather than society’s, which he considered materialistic. He wanted to be different, like most transcendentalists do. In one of his most famous works called Walden, he comes up with an amazing and inspirational aphorism, “If a man does not keep pace with his companions, perhaps it is because he hears a different drummer” (Thoreau 390). This aphorism is similar to one of Emerson’s most famous, but also gives a whole new perspective to the idea that everyone is different and everyone can accomplish their own goals independently.
The quote that I was most fond of throughout David Thoreau and Ralph Waldo Emerson’s works was said by Emerson in the 2nd paragraph of Self-Reliance that states “Trust thyself; every heart vibrates to that iron string. Accept the place the divine providence has for you, the society of your contemporaries, the connection of events.”. He had said this quote when he was talking about how one will find a time in their life when something becomes too much to handle, and that the “imitation of suicide” will be relevant. He also tries to convince the reader that their divine spirit is greater than the one of society, and that they should be different than the people surrounding them. After the quote, he discusses that society is simply a conspiracy
The concept of disregarding society’s views and being self-reliant is celebrated by Transcendentalists. Although, this is not as easy for me as one may think. I was brought up ever since I was a kid to care what others thought of me. So by following the concepts of Transcendentalists I would be changing the person I

The movie starts in 1957, where the Soviet Union just successfully launched the space rocket Sputnik. The movie is about Homer Hickam, who lived in Coalwood, West Virginia. In this essay I am explaining how the four authors: Michael Donovan, Emerson, Thoreau, and Krakauer’s transcendental beliefs are similar. To me transcendental means your own belief and the way you see life. Michael, author of “It’s All-On-Me” says in his poem, “looks like it's time to up and start mounting a game-plan attack” he is saying everything is going wrong and needs a plan to make it all better again so Michael is going to find the best way for himself to feel better. Michael Donovan is very similar in a way with these authors, they are very independent and kind of stubborn in a way that these differences make them alike. Ralph Emerson, a very independent man who needs nobody but himself, he believes in rights as well as his
Ralph Waldo Emerson: “Self-Reliance” Ralph Waldo Emerson, one of America’s most significant thinkers and writers, in what is believed to be his most important and influential expression of America’s spirit “Self-Reliance” talks about the importance and significance of individualism and being yourself. Throughout his writing, Emerson uses many rhetorical devices, interesting sentence structures and hortatory tone in order to successfully explain the importance of being yourself. Emerson’s work often times stands out due to his interesting way of writing, and even in the first paragraph, Emerson is quick to grab the attention of his audience by using a periodic sentence and a dash with which he states his claim, “To believe your own thought, to believe what is true for you in your private heart, is true for all men − that is genius” (Emerson 1). To put into other words, Emerson’s unique sentence structures in his writing really serve as effective and important tools.
The transcendentalism time period is described as a time that stressed equality, social responsibility, and the power of the individual. Although this time period had many influential authors, Ralph Waldo Emerson and Henry David Thoreau were two of the most influential writers of this era. Throughout both Self Reliance, written by Ralph Waldo Emerson, and Civil Disobedience, written by Henry David Thoreau, the lesson of non-conformity to society and the idea that it is each person’s social responsibility to stand up for themselves is discussed. One of Emerson’s main goal of Self Reliance was wanting to explain an important idea of individuality and that humans should not conform to the societal views that were being forced upon them and that
Transcendentalism is the belief that man is inherently good, is an independent thinker, and goes out into nature to get in touch with himself. Generally, man has good intentions and intends no harm unto others. In addition, man does not need society to give him and develop his thoughts, as he already has them within. To help bring out these already installed beliefs, man has the desire to go out into nature to get in touch with himself and find deeper notions within. In Ralph Waldo Emerson’s writings “Self Reliance” and “American Scholar”, he writes about how being a true individual means that one must have his own beliefs, and not copy someone else’s ideas.
Individualism is important to society because we would be able to be who we want, you get to look at problems with different perspectives, and you get to choose your religion. If you aren 't allowed to be who you want, then who are you? Being who you want to be is important to individualism because you should be able to be who you want to be. You can choose to read what books you want, watch the movies you want, hang out with the people you want, and do what you want if you live in a country that allows individualism. You
