Ramon Betances was a politician, born on April 8, 1827, in Cabo Rojo. He received his primary and secondary education in private schools. His mother died when he was young and his father sent him to France. After receiving his medical degree from the University of Paris in 1855, Ramon Betances returned to Puerto Rico and founded a hospital. He worked to save Puerto Ricans from the cholera epidemic. Also, Betances founded a clandestine society which was dedicated to the liberation of the slaves. The Spanish colonial government exiled Ramon Betances for these activities several times. In the year of 1867, Betances fled to the present-day Dominican Republic, where he founded the Revolutionary Committee of Puerto Rico. The following year, Ramon
