Music: A way to convey one’s emotions to others through different notes and rhythms. Though not many people can create this form of art, anybody can enjoy, and interpret it in their own way. All music takes talent to write, but as time has passed, it is a common opinion that music has lost the meaning behind it. In order to make it to the top of the charts, the talent needed has declined. The lyrical meaning, as well as the feeling in the notes has all lost the amount of meaning it once contained. Progressive music has proven itself very complex, and difficult to write, whereas rap has become easier to write. Lyrics, though not necessarily required, help explain the meaning of the songs. They can explain exactly what the musician is trying …show more content…
The structure of the instrumental parts have also become much simpler, becoming a 4/4 time signature with a bass and snare beat. Bands, especially in the progressive genres, like Dream Theater were written in more complex time signatures, which can help the song have a different feel, and make each song more significant. Writing in 4/4 isn’t always bad, however not every song should have this time signature. Songs like “The Dance of Eternity” by Dream theater has a total of 108 time signature changes. This is not necessary, but listening to it, you can get a very different feel as opposed to songs such as “Black Beatles” by Rae Sremmurd. All the switches of time signatures aren’t the deciding factor on whether a song is good or not, but a change can help communicate different feelings. The song length is another aspect that has been hurt. Though many groups don’t usually write music over approximately 5 minutes, both Pink Floyd, and Dream Theater have songs over twenty, and both songs contain enough differences to maintain the listeners attention. Progressive rock and progressive metal both top the average song length, at about 6:10, while rap songs typically stay below 4 minutes. Long songs do not take talent, but making them interesting does, and the progressive genres have proven themselves worthy of such a …show more content…
The drummer in a rock or metal band is given the task of holding the band together. Every kick of the bass drum, sharp ting of the snare, or ring of a cymbal helps keep the band at the same spot of a song. In many genres such as pop, rap, and electronic, the artists use artificial sounds, made from a computer. Even if the music was immensely difficult, performing it would be as simple as hitting “play”, taking away any musical talent required to play live. Many drummers practiced for years, studying every aspect of the art, developing skills to perform the music they love. In fact, every instrument in a band takes years of practice and hours of practice to get where they are. Guitarists like David Gilmour, John Petrucci, and Adam Jones have all spent a large majority of their lives committed to their art, and have or will be committed for most of their lives to come. As time has gone on, and genres like Progressive Rock have died and Mumble Rap have been born, music has become simpler and easier to write. The lyrical meaning and structure have become yelling about money they acquire over a 4/4 beat, and the difficulty of performing has dropped dramatically. The instruments have become computers, making generic sounds over and over. Though music requiring talent still exists, it is much more difficult to
We have had music throughout history, and it has changed yet stayed the same. What I mean by this is that even though music is constantly evolving and has throughout history, its always been there. I hope that music is something that we will always have in life to connect us. No matter the
Music fans continue to play and listen to their music.
The usual age of artists nowadays can be surmised as very young compared to what was popularized in the mid-80s to the early-90s. We all have been amazed by the impressive talents of musicians as young as 14 until the mid-adult age of 25. It is quite an elating feeling to know that those who are dubbed as The Millenials have this awe-inspiring trait of being confident, despite their seeming inexperience. What they lean on is their talent being developed at an early age, and the challenge they have to undergo is truly valid to enter the general music scene. We can never deny that the more we become music addicts, the more we 're exposed to knowing singers or groups 10 years younger than us.
How Rock and Roll Has Been Affected and Evolved Through the Ages Larry Williams, the blues and rock and roll singer, once said, “Rock and Roll has no beginning and no end for it is the very pulse of life itself.” With this quote, he shows that rock and roll truly is an ever-changing enigma. Its lifespan is similar to that of a human’s life because it has consisted of many phases like rockabilly, doowop, and many others. It has had its ups and its downs with the appearance of young new talent that inspired people around the world, and the death of superstars has ripped fans apart as long as this historical music genre has existed.
Music can change time, tempo, dynamics, and mood very fast. This music can also be easy on the ears to quite difficult to listen to. “It is natural enough for the uninitiated to imagine that all problematic music may be safely damned under a single heading. But actually, even in the old days of "ultra-modern" music, a great many different kinds of music were grouped indiscriminately together,
Musicians are “great problem solvers in school and social situations” because they have a stronger corpus callosum, the part of the brain that connects the two halves.(Berman) When an outsider joins band their minds are opened into a whole new world. This is because when a person is making music there is not only one place in the brain that is being activated. A musician is using parts of the brain that have to do with the visual, auditory, and motor functions of the brain. People who play a musical instrument are working multiple parts of their brain at once making it easier for them to remember information more.
Rock and Roll has revolutionized the way we behave, dress, and much more. To this day rock and roll continues to make its statement in society. It had become a popular music genre that dominated the 1950’s and currently today 's music culture. The music genre originated in the 1950’s. It is a combination of Jazz, Blues, and Gospel.
How many people have ever thanked their practice on the trombone when they received a raise or got a call back on an interview? Not to mention that people with fine arts degrees, depending on where you look, have a staggering 16.2% unemployment rate (yes, even worse than library sciences). This causes college graduates, who spent thousands of their parents’ dollars to “pursue their passion” as they likely justified it, to find welcoming jobs at fast food restaurants and laundromats. This leaves band with no purpose other than entertainment. Yes, it is true that the games and performances are fun.
From songs like the notorious “Gucci Gang” and the repetitive “Thunder,” music has slowly been losing its depth. As Trevon Dunn once claimed: “Pop culture is not about depth. It's about marketing, supply and demand, consumerism.” However, to claim that all music lacks depth and only cares about consumerism, is rather generalized opinion considering there is an incredible amount of songs that are filled with emotion and meaning that are still consumed just as eagerly as ones thats aren’t.
Music classes serve no purpose in schools and are essentially replaceable. This is because most adults either forget how to play their instruments or never use it in real life unless it’s part of a career or passion. What’s the use of knowledge that fades away and makes no contribution? A newrepublic.com editor surveyed adults who had
Hail the human race, but I never knew a person can gyrate their body part of their body with such vigor and dedication such as I see today. I doubt if whether Elvis Presley were to wake up today he would do a gig with Justin Bieber or Shakira and go home celebrating how they fired up the place. Or would he go home complaining how the song lacked harmony, or they were too synthetic or lacked a particular instrument? I don’t for a second doubt whether The Beatles and Lady Gaga would find common ground when it comes to rebellion and controversy, but would share the same platform. Disappointingly, this new crop of musician will always find a way to get inspired by a Diana Ross, a Michael Jackson, or an Elvis Presley.
The Homogeneity of Pop Music Pop music, or popular music, in the modern sense has been around in the United States for several decades, having begun around the late sixties, and has encompassed an assortment of genres throughout its progression. As pop music has aged and adapted, an increasingly common complaint among the critics of this genre is all pop songs being homogenous, or they “all sounds the same”. Typically, the fans of this genre respond by stating each song is easily distinguishable from one another, provide a unique musical experience, or they aren’t less unique than any other category of music. Nevertheless, recent evidence supports the notion of pop music sharing numerous underlying traits between many of its songs. The homogeneity
For example, heavy metal band Avenged Sevenfold have been able to write and record their newest album without the use of autotune or computerized beats,“There's no drum samples on there, there's no vocal tuning, there's none of that stuff” (Epstein, “Avenged Sevenfold Talk Wild New AI-Themed LP”, rollingstone.com, 2016). Despite the vocals not being altered whatsoever, the album still managed to debut at number 4 on the Billboard 200, which is considered to be a huge achievement for many bands in the metal genre. Unfortunately, many artists are not able to achieve the same level of success while writing their own material and refusing to use autotune. For example, Taylor Dayne refused to let people write material for her and her album sales plummeted (Rich, “Hit Charade”, theatlantic.com,
Different types of music have shaped how people in different areas can use it to fit their own needs. As the world continues
It all depends on who the artist is and if they are inspired to write or not. A song is like a three minute story. There’s a beginning, a middle, and of course an end. The main purpose of a song is to tell that story, whether it is about love, heartbreak, bad times, good times, it is a story that is being told.
