Coming from a disadvantaged household myself, the lyrics of rap artists resonate with me. Artists like Kendrick Lamar spur a pursuit of something greater. Artists like Kanye West allow me to understand that is alright to be different. The lyricism of the artists that I am a personal fan of not only deal with the trials and tribulations of poverty and crime, but touch on overall human experiences, such as finding love, or growing up. However, many people do not see it that way. In one instance, I was travelling with a group of friends, a parent driving us. I was gifted the power of the ¨aux cord¨ (the ability to choose and play music on the car radio - a commonly sought after position in the car), and played the empowering song, “Dreams and Nightmares” by Meek Mill, a song that tells the story of a young Robert Williams as he tries to survive on the streets of Baltimore. Whether it was concerts, clothing, or albums, my parents encouraged my participation in the hip hop culture. As a Hip Hop Head, time and time again I have related to a lyric in song. Rap and Hip hop touch base on so many issues, and provide an insight on the life of the artists. This insight allows Hip Hop Heads to see that they are not lone in any struggle. Instead there are thousands of people that know exactly what that Head is going through. It is a blessing that my parents allowed me to participate in a culture that allowed my to grow and understand myself as a person. However, not every Head has this luxury. Gabe Villegas explained that, “My mom thinks it’s nonsense, never really ever supports it. She thinks I’m gonna end up like a druggie,” which further supports the discrimination against hip hop culture. It is a travesty that Heads do not have the support from their strongest safety net, for the culture of hip hop is fundamental to most Hip Hop
