In Chapter Seven: Lessons From My Year as a Freshman, Rebekah Nathan summarizes and answers questions on the knowledge she gained from becoming a freshman. The author begins the chapter with a cross-cultural conversation between professors and students. She discusses how professors are not aware of the students living conditions or the effort that goes into achieving a high GPA. Likewise, the students do not understand professor rank and advancement. Nathan also reflects on the time she spent as a student and gains a new perspective during course preparations.
I do not share Deresiewicz’s pessimism about the soullessness of higher education today because the students I have met and had the pleasure of teaching — engineers, artists, accountants, pre-med, pre-law, and yes, English, history, philosophy, and classics majors — have souls, every last one of ’em, and in many cases more developed souls than their elders running the asylum. One reason for this is what Deresiewicz describes as the parallel curriculum and parallel college. Students pursue internships, network in student organizations, and participate in a dizzying variety of extracurriculars. Deresiewicz thinks students are “deserting the classroom” for these opportunities. He should be pleased.
This could still happen if players feel that they have been mistreated, which is why players should not be allowed to unionize. The main reason players should not be allowed to unionize is players could get whatever they want if they went on strike. A nationwide strike of NCAA athletes would not only upset the school, but also the millions of people who watch college sports every year. Besides making masses of people upset a strike would lose millions of dollars of revenue for schools, affecting the whole school not just the athletes. “This threat has to do with the position of these so-called "premier" sports as part of a continuing and dramatic revolution in the culture of sport in America(Hearn)”.
Some people believe this because college athletes aren’t employees, sports programs do not have the money to spare, and there are already scholarships given to athletes. Many people never want to be the person putting money into another person’s pocket; paying college athletes is no exception. College athletes are at a college to learn about a specific degree. They are not at college to play sports (Cooper 12). Many of the college athletes aren’t considering their education, they want to play their sports.
These students know that their may be dirty looks, or harsh words. That is still to this day something that happens. According to Sonali Kholi of The Atlantic, ""On top of the issue of paying for college—often without in-state tuition or financial aid—and the stress of illegal status, undocumented undergraduates in the U.S. also find themselves wondering whether a college campus is "..undocufriendly. In other words, is it welcoming to students who are not in the country legally?" (Kholi).
In college today there is an overload of privacy. People believe the they are old enough to be trusted on their own. The pravice given by the college is too much for the students too handle on their own. Also people in college don't have enough time to do everything they want. These are some of the main reasons that people in college are failing.
I took courses across multiple disciplines, yet I remained remote from the ideas presented – until I met my professor for General Chemistry during my junior year. I enjoyed the class lectures, and I attended the professor’s office hours often that she asked me to become a learning assistant (LA) for the course. As luck would have it, I acquired the job title. With the help of four other LAs, I assisted the professor teach a class of two hundred students. The five of us met weekly and collaborated with the professor on lesson plans while answering students’ questions during lecture.
Part of the college experience is about meeting people, making friends; but even this isn’t for everybody. If anyone even tries to go to a school that is outside their socioeconomic class than they are at such a large disadvantage for making friends with anyone. Bobby Allyn wrote an article about his experience as a working class man going to a very prestigious college. Allyn says in his article, “College is supposed to be a time of self-reinvention, when students discover who they are and decide on career paths. But for me, it has been a time of social readjustment.” When it come to the social aspect of College, students are forced to stick to their social class which is a complete dice roll for if the College selection is good or not.
It is frowned upon by many in academic institutions, not just from the faculty but from the students as well. Those who earn their grades honestly feel as if they are not getting the full satisfaction they deserve from working their butts off to get the grade they earned. On every campus cheating is considered breaking a law, which makes it a social standard that everyone needs to follow or else face the consequences. Yet according to the “Cheating College Student Epidemic” article, when an anonymous survey was put up about cheating, 60% of the people who admitted to cheating said that they were never caught. They realized that they did something wrong but yet were never forced to pay the consequence so it just seems like a part of the academic experience to them.
America is built on diverse ideas from different group of people, and by not comfortably allowing students, who are the future of this country, express their opinions; we are slowing our growth as a nation. In addition to that, professors on campus don’t feel safe either when guns are allowed on campus. College students just like me, want good grades and when they feel like an exam was too hard, they like to complain to the teacher. In a normal classroom, this wouldn’t be a big deal. However,
According to the TNCC 's Graduation Transfer Retention report, only 15.7 percent of students were able to complete their degree in 2012. This statistic is appalling because the students are working hard in their classes, paying the college 's financial gills, and hoping to get their degree. Some of student cannot graduate. I am attending Thomas Nelson Community College, and I hope to earn my degree within two years. Although college is difficult, I will be successful by seeking advice from experts and developing some effective study strategies.
During my Micronesian Island Club meeting, our Pacific Islander Student Commission Director needed a proxy for her voting seat in the ASUW Student Senate. I saw an opportunity to become more involved in my school community, even if it was temporary. I took the initiative to be her proxy. I attended weekly meetings which discussed current issues impacting our students and campus to formulate the official opinion of ASUW. After a few meetings, I was intrigued with the leadership of ASUW’s cooperative organization and was elected to be senator.
