In February 2014, the NFL had embarked on the biggest crisis the league has faced in its 94 years of existence. Ray Rice, professional running back for the Baltimore Ravens, has disrupted the NFL community because of his domestic violence scandal. The basic information of the case, the negative effects, the positive outcomes, and my opinion should hopefully make you understand the great effect it has on the NFL community.
It all started the late afternoon of February 14, Valentine’s Day, at the Revel Casino Hotel in Atlantic City with two other couples. They had dinner and drinks and then went to the bar at the casino were they had a bottle of tequila. As the night had gone on, the couple eventually made their way back to the room at about

It was then Ray Rice spits and openly smacks his then fiancé in the face as she is walking towards an elevator to get on her floor. As she steps into the elevator, he follows behind her as he begins to yell at her. When she begins to talk back to him, he then spits on her again, violently punches her with his left hand, and knocks her out by her falling into the wall and railing in the elevator. After the horrible confrontation in the casino elevator, the Ravens owner Steve Bisciotti, President Dick Cass and general manger Ozzie Newsome started to make public and private pushes for Ray Rice to get back on the field. In early April Rice’s attorney, Michael J. Diamondstein, got a hold of the inside-elevator video and told the President Cass: “Its f---ing horrible.” But that didn’t convince him that he should view the video and instead pushed for Rice’s legal team to get him in a pretrial intervention program after he heard some of the its advantages. One of the key benefits: it keeps the video from being released. Four days later, the prosecutor signed off on the pretrial intervention program. If he completed the one-year program and went to anger management classes, the court would discharge the felony aggravated assault charge. …show more content…
In another effort to fix what Goodell and the NFL have done wrong, he changed the punishments for domestic violence. People across the country have been angry due to the light punishment Rice had gotten and inconsistent with other cases. They have announced that the first offense is a six game suspension and the second offense the player will be banished from the league for at least one year. This is one of the rare occasions that Goodell has admitted he was wrong and he usually never back down in the face of criticism. Its taking time but the NFL is trying to make it right with the Ray Rice case.
Mike Webster was a center for the Pittsburgh Steelers. Mike Webster had many injuries as a result of playing football. He had broken bones, torn tendons, heart malfunctions, and his teeth were falling out. However, his worst one of all was the injury to his head. In 2003, after Webster passed away, Dr. Bennet Omalu did an examination of his brain.
The rivalry mainly consists of nasty fights, broken bones, accusations and allegations. According to Cohn, “If during the past decade the franchises had not forges what is considered to be the NFL’s most intense, competitive and bone-crunching rivalry.” (Cohn 1) The league continues to dismiss the rivalry as much as possible describing it as friendly rough competition but according to the players it seems sometimes more than that. Terrell Suggs is a current linebacker for the Ravens that has experienced first-hand the rivalry.
He was charged with running a dogfighting operation with a few friends and lying about being a part of the illegal operation. In the operation he would train dogs mainly pitbulls because they had strong jaws. If the dogs weren't good enough they would kill them with various methods such as hanging, electrocution and drowning. This charge can possibly get you five years in prison. The NFL suspended him indefinitely without pay at all after he admitted to taking part in the dog operation with a few friends.
This article addresses the Baltimore Ravens’ former running back Ray Rice and the ban that was placed on him as the result of a domestic violence incident he committed upon his then fiancé. At the time of the incident, the two were in a hotel elevator in Atlantic City, New Jersey. Video surveillance showed Rice punching his wife twice, knocking her out on the second punch. The commissioner of the NFL, Roger Goodell, responded by fining Rice and issuing him a two-game suspension. He was not prosecuted and his felony charge of committing third-degree aggravated assault was to be removed from his record after one year.
Over the past summer many sports fans have either watched, talked, or listened about the major NFL conflict known as “Deflategate”. In many ways Deflategate has either turned people away from being fans of the NFL or brought them in, but first the question must be asked: What is “Deflategate”? Deflategate all started when text messages between the New England Patriots starting Quarterback, Tom Brady, and Patriots equipment staff leaked to the media. These text messages occurred before a division final playoff game verses the Indianapolis Colts and they showed that Tom Brady had asked members of the equipment staff to deflate the football used for the game. To the average football fan the deflating of a football by two psi wouldn’t make a big
Rice, who played for the Baltimore Ravens, only received a two game suspension after video came out in 2014 proving his crime. Meanwhile Buffalo Bills player Seantrel Henderson in 2016 was banned from the NFL for using medical Marijuana, prescribed for Crohn 's disease. Its instances like this since the beginning Goodell 's tenure in 2006, that displays his lack of commitment to ethics in the professional sports industry. Goodell and his administration, have shown that profits and viewership take precedent over the well beings of people associated with the
On January 18th, 2015, during the NFL’s AFC Championship, New England Patriots’ quarterback, Tom Brady, was accused of throwing deflated footballs in the first half of the game. It wasn’t noticed until Colts linebacker, D’Qwell Jackson, intercepted a Tom Brady pass in the second quarter and realized the football didn’t have the proper air quantity. Colts personnel measured the ball and it was, in fact, under regulation amount. The footballs were inflated during halftime; however, Brady threw better with the proper sized balls than he did with the deflated balls. News began to leak on social media regarding the situation, and soon after, the NFL launched an independent investigation and concluded the findings in the Wells Report.
Direct violence is of course, one-on-one physical violence, which is not present in this conflict. But what is present is both structural and cultural violence. Structural violence is described by Burton as damaging deprivations caused by the nature of social institutions and policies. (Burton 1979) The players are suffering not only as a result of the NFL’s suppression of information about the extent of damage done by MTBI but also the NFL’s protocol for dealing with concussed players and their return to play.
“That would be like the American Association saying hey, if it’s not our sponsored research, we don’t acknowledge or comment on it only we can figure out heart disease” (Laskas 165). This showed that the NFL was being biased and that they were hiding some data thinking no one would uncover their secrets “Or it would be like the tobacco industry in the 1980’s denying that cigarettes caused cancer despite mounting evidence that they did” (Laskas 165). This is an example of what the NFL did in attempt to cover up the secret .By using Analogy Jeanne Laskas showed the audience how dirty and sneaky the NFL is. In the book Concussion by Jeanna Laskas the author used a variety of different techniques to persuade the audience on what the NFL has been hiding.
The NFL’s reaction was absurd and all they did was place many people in danger. Their decision to withhold the truth led to parents
In today’s society, we have former National Football League(NFL) quarterback Collin Kapernick who’s no longer in the NFL because of his protest against racial inequality. However, many people believe he is no longer in the NFL because of his talent. Kapernick led the 49ers to Super Bowl 47. Although they didn’t win, he threw for 302 yards with a touchdown and rushed for 62 yards. Therefore, he didn’t get kicked out of the league because he wasn’t good enough, but for sitting down during the national anthem.
Generally people think that the NFL should adjust the game, and its rules to increase player safety, statistics clearly show that too much adjusting has been done and the NFL is suffering because of it. Too many rules have been changed for player safety and the current changes being discussed, like getting rid of the kickoff, are going to far and the game is not like it was. Players sign contracts and are aware of the risks they put themselves at when playing the game of football at a professional level. Referees are throwing more flags and the NFL commissioner, Roger Goodell, is handing out a record high of fines. These adjustments by the National Football League are going too far and some rule changes need to be reverted back to their previous rules.

On September 26th 2014, Derek Jeter took his final swing at the most prestigious Yankees Stadium in front of thousands and millions of baseball fans and ended up winning his final home game. The crowd went ballistic over the RBI and chanted “Derek Jeter” while raising signs that read “Salute to the Captain”. At that very moment, people viewed Derek Jeter not for what race he fell under or for what kind of person he was or for the ladies he slept with, but the athlete who electrified the diamond every time he stepped on it. Roberta Newman wrote an article on (Branding Derek Jeter, Redefining Race) companies such as Movado and Avon on how they showcase Derek Jeter “as neither black nor white and so can relate to everyone” (Newman) as a turning
”I am dealing with a lifelong penalty”, Ray has said in a recent interview that he truly feels sorrowful about his past actions. The polar opposite of Ray Rice is Greg Hardy, Hardy continues to deny that he abused his former girlfriend despite photos of abominable bruises. In spite of numerous bruises and pictures, Hardy does not even believe the pictures of bruises are real. Hardy also said that he had “never put his hand on any woman” or threatened Nicole Holder’s life. Significant differences between the abuser’s feelings, and significant differences between the
