Arianna Evans As Toni Cade Bamambar once wrote “We stand there with this big smile of respect between us.” A smile can have so many meanings. In “Raymond's Run” written by Toni C. Barbama Squeaky is the main character. Squeaky's real name is Hazel Elizabeth Deborah Parker. She is overprotective of her older brother Raymond, because he is slower than most people his age but realizes he is a fast runner. Raymond and Squeaky live in Harlem, New York. Squeaky has a passion for running and always winning. She has a race one day and goes up against a girl named Gretchen, and she is a fast runner. Squeaky is a dynamic character, because she changes her perspective on winning and smiles at Gretchen at the end of the race. As a solitary reason, Squeaky is a dynamic character, because she changes her perspective on winning. Squeaky is only focused on winning and is really competitive about this race, “Squeaky you must win, you must win, you are the fastest thing in the world, you can even beat your father up Amsterdam if you really try”(Page 30 paragraph 1). Squeaky cares more about coaching her brother and letting him get an award for himself as well.“And I'm selling to beat …show more content…
In “Raymond's Run” Squeaky and Gretchen do not like each other. They view each other negatively “Then Gretchen puts her hands on her hips and is about to say something with her freckled-face self but doesn't.”(page 26 paragraph 8) Furthermore, in the end of the story “And she nods to congratulate me and then she smiles. And I smile.”(page 32) This proves by the end of the race she has gained respect for Gretchen even if the outcome turned out of her winning, tieing or losing the race. Additionally, in the end Squeaky was just happy that they both had real, respectful smiles for each other. To conclude, throughout the story she has a respectful outlook on Gretchen
It all started with a little story called ¨Raymond's Run¨ by Toni Cade Bambara. A girl named Squeaky happens to be taking care of her special brother Raymond and filling in all her needs. However, don't think that she is soft for one moment. That's why I think she is a feisty but a thoughtful person, she doesn't care what others think. She also will stand out for bullies that try to hurt her brother.
The author’s message of Toni Cade Bambara’s book, “Raymond’s Run” is clear and it’s “Be yourself, not anybody else.” This idea is pointed out in many lines and pages as on line 10-15 states that Raymond is an out of the ordinary little boy. “ But a lot of people call him my little brother cause he needs looking after cause he’s not quite right.” and “...it’s the first time I ever saw that
This proves how Squeaky is fast and she doesn’t want people to mess
In life, a lot of people are overprotective of others and it’s mostly toward loved ones, after all, people want to protect the ones they want to keep around for a long time. In “Raymond's Run” by Toni Cade Bambara, Squeaky is very protective of her brother Raymond because he cannot protect himself. These are three reasons why I think Squeaky is very protective of Raymond. This is the first reason that shows how protective Squeaky is of Raymond is that when people run into her she takes everything seriously when she is with Raymond or if it’s about him. For example, when Gretchen came up to Squeaky and Raymond and they started talking then when Mary asked “What grade you in now, Raymond?”
As Lenny and Curley’s wife connect deeply, she lets him touch her soft hair; however, Lennie would not let go. Although Lenny is such a soft gentle man, he often becomes confused and frightened and is unable to control the illness embedded within his mind. When Curley’s wife screeches and shouts when Lenny will not let go of her hair, he shakes her violently to make her stop, yet he does
These reasons may come off as Squeaky being a rude person or a bully. She really wants friends because she focuses her life on Raymond and her hobbies. Another reason is, Squeaky doesn't really talk nicely to people like Gretchen and her friends so they don’t get along. Since Squeaky is over protective of Raymond, she threatens people like Gretchen who make fun of him. Because Squeaky is also competitive it leads people to think that she is an aggressive person.
Lennie and Curley’s wife ran into each other one day in the barn where Curley’s wife was talking to him without a sense of spite. Lennie started to play with her hair, but passively was doing it to rough. She began to scream,
There had been far too many incidents at this point and it just easier to put him out of his misery like Carlson did with Candy’s dog. Both the dog and Lennie had been best friends to someone for a long time, but neither of their caregivers could help them anymore. Curley’s wife claims that she thinks Lennie is “nuts” but Lennie explains that he just “likes to pet nice things with his fingers, sof’ things” (90). Knowing about the red dress incident, all of the mice he has killed, and now the puppy, she tempts him with feeling her hair. He does not know any better than to hold onto it, thus he has not learned from his mistakes.
“Raymond’s Run” teaches us how we can turn the tables on a struggle , and look at it from a brighter , lighter perspective. Squeaky changes the way she sees Raymond . Raymond goes from being somebody Squeaky has to “mind” , to being her champion. To solve her struggle , Squeaky had to turn the tables on this struggle , and look at it from a new perspective. “Ashes” shows us that some struggles require your heart , instead of your head .
She creates stories and makes assumptions. She also prefers to talk, not listen. For example, when Beth and Calvin go to play golf, Calvin tells Beth that Conrad “needs to know that you don’t hate him”. She gets defensive immediately and starts to accuse Conrad of telling lies to his father, convinced that Conrad is against her. She shows signs of violence, including labeling Instead, she should control her stories and presume that people are basically good.
Later on, when Squeaky is ready and up for her competition, the May Day program for running, Raymond stayed in the swings that were too small but were going to be too tiny the next year. As Squeaky and Gretchen were getting ready to race, Raymond bends down and stretches like he knew what he was supposed to do. Lastly, when the
Squeaky won the race that she was prepared for; with Gretchen coming in a close second. At the end of the race, she and Gretchen shared a smile of respect between
This shows how Squeaky notices how Raymond likes to run. This shows why Squeaky would give up her passion for running just for
From the very beginning of the story, it is obvious that Squeaky not only "minds" her brother, she is his protector. Whenever she is training or practicing her breathing exercises, she is always sure to keep Raymond on the inside of the sidewalk, never close to the street. This way, he won't run into the street or splash in puddles, getting himself wet and dirty. Squeaky has no problem standing up for her brother. When Gretchen and her crew tries to start trouble with Raymond, Squeaky is quick to tell them; "You got anything to say to my brother you say it to me..."
They also have to work harder in order to pay for their house and live a better life. Squeaky lives in New York City and is the fastest runner in the whole city. She runs, with her brother Raymond following along. There is a big competition and Squeaky realizes that
