In the short story “Raymond's Run” by Toni Cade Bambara, a girl named Hazel or Squeaky (nickname) is a character who may seem disrespectful and impolite on the outside, but she is kindhearted on the inside. Squeaky is admirable because she is tough, she stands up for her brother, and she is confident in her running ability. My first reason Squeaky is admirable is because she is tough. For example, Squeaky says “I must rather knock you down and take my chances.” on page 1. This shows how Squeaky is acting strong in front of her enemies. Another example of how Squeaky is tough is that Squeaky doesn’t care if she gets in a fight. She knows she is strong enough to beat anybody in a fight. My third example of how Squeaky is tough is when she says on page 1, “The big kids call me Mercury because I’m the swiftest thing in the neighborhood.” This proves how Squeaky is fast and she doesn’t want people to mess …show more content…
For instance, Squeaky gets into a fight with an impolite girl named Gretchen. Gretchen decides to change the topic of their fight and starts to mention Raymond. Squeaky gets mad and says, “You got anything to say to my brother you say it to me…” (page 3). This shows how Squeaky will do anything to defend Raymond. My second example of how Squeaky takes care of her brother Raymond is when she says on page 1, “All I have to do in life is mind by brother Raymond, which is enough.” This shows that Squeaky does stuff for Raymond. Another example of how Squeaky cares for her brother Raymond is when Squeaky says, “And by the time he comes over I’m running and jumping to see him -- my brother Raymond…” on page 6. This shows that Squeaky loves her brother Raymond. My last reason for how Squeaky takes care of her brother Raymond is that Squeaky said that she would give up her running career for Raymond so he can have his own trophies and stuff. This shows that Squeaky cares for
It all started with a little story called ¨Raymond's Run¨ by Toni Cade Bambara. A girl named Squeaky happens to be taking care of her special brother Raymond and filling in all her needs. However, don't think that she is soft for one moment. That's why I think she is a feisty but a thoughtful person, she doesn't care what others think. She also will stand out for bullies that try to hurt her brother.
In the short story, “Raymond’s Run,” the protagonist, Squeaky, can be pictured as tough, not caring about others’ opinions, serious about running, and is not scared of standing out. She depicts herself as a poor African-American girl that doesn’t care about appearance and doesn’t understand her classmates are so feminine. The first reason why she is tougher than others is because she is unconcerned about others' opinions and lacks sensitivity of other’s needs and perspectives. On the top of page two, the story states that she doesn’t care about people knowing she has a passion for running and her breathing exercises.
Being protective of someone who cant protect themselves is important. In the article, “Raymond's Run” by Toni Cade Bambara, the main character Squeaky is overprotective of her brother Raymond who most likely has a disability and can not protect himself. Squeaky participates in running, running helps her keep a reputation in her community. One day she participates in a race when she notices her brother running on the side lines. Squeaky is devoted to protecting Raymond, running and devoted to protecting herself.
In “Raymond's Run” Squeaky and Gretchen do not like each other. They view each other negatively “Then Gretchen puts her hands on her hips and is about to say something with her freckled-face self but doesn't. ”(page 26 paragraph 8) Furthermore, in the end of the story “And she nods to congratulate me and then she smiles.
In life, a lot of people are overprotective of others and it’s mostly toward loved ones, after all, people want to protect the ones they want to keep around for a long time. In “Raymond's Run” by Toni Cade Bambara, Squeaky is very protective of her brother Raymond because he cannot protect himself. These are three reasons why I think Squeaky is very protective of Raymond. This is the first reason that shows how protective Squeaky is of Raymond is that when people run into her she takes everything seriously when she is with Raymond or if it’s about him. For example, when Gretchen came up to Squeaky and Raymond and they started talking then when Mary asked “What grade you in now, Raymond?”
This is proven throughout many parts of the story where Squeaky says that she’s always ready to fight anyone, even that she’d much rather “knock you down than talk.” At the beginning of the story, she says that if anyone had anything to say to her brother, they would have to get through her first. Another example is when squeaky comes across some girls that she knows. They try to ask what grade Raymond is in and Squeaky steps in front of him and says “If you have something to say to my brother, you say it to me.” This attitude toward anyone is practically asking for a fight, which is hard to
These reasons may come off as Squeaky being a rude person or a bully. She really wants friends because she focuses her life on Raymond and her hobbies. Another reason is, Squeaky doesn't really talk nicely to people like Gretchen and her friends so they don’t get along. Since Squeaky is over protective of Raymond, she threatens people like Gretchen who make fun of him. Because Squeaky is also competitive it leads people to think that she is an aggressive person.
Lennie and Curley’s wife ran into each other one day in the barn where Curley’s wife was talking to him without a sense of spite. Lennie started to play with her hair, but passively was doing it to rough. She began to scream,
Although Arnetta appears as a strongest character in the story; she is the weakest character, because she does things to hurt people. On page 280, Arnetta talks about how the other troop smells like wet chihuahuas. Which shows to the audience that she is a bully. On page 284 and 285, Arnetta tells the group that one of the girls from the other troop called Daphne the n word. Arnetta tries to do anything to get the other girls against troop 909.
The short stories, “Fortune Cookie” by Avi and “Raymond's Run” by Toni Cade Bambara, are about two disrespectful kids named Parker and Squeaky that act nasty to others. They don't understand that in life, they have to appreciate others point of view. The ways that this is true is in the way the characters don't understand how others feel, in the way the characters are disrespectful to others, and in the way the characters only think about their feelings. The first way that the stories suggest that in life, you should appreciate others point of view is in the way the characters don't understand how others feel ¨“Hey, you never said anything about money,” I said.
She shows she is responsible by taking care of her brother, protecting him, always practicing her sprints and is prepared for school. Examples of Squeaky being confident would be when she states, “There is no track meet that I don’t win the first place medal.” And she also says,” In the first place, no one can beat me and that’s all there is to it.” Secondly, Squeaky is always prepared. In the story, Squeaky talks about staying up to study for a spelling test, practicing her breathing, and practicing her running.
This quote shows that Lennie is incapable of keeping a puppy, nevertheless, rabbits. When it came to the incident with Curley’s wife, that was different. “You stop it now, you’ll mess it all up.” (91). She had invited him to pet her hair, but he started petting it to hard.
This shows how Squeaky notices how Raymond likes to run. This shows why Squeaky would give up her passion for running just for
Also, since he is the boss’ son, he starts to threaten him withmake threats about kicking him off the farm and beating him up in the barn. Although he was only talking with Curley 's wife, Curley is suspicious of her being around other people; t. Therefore, because of his need to be in charge he must be in charge, he has to constantly know her location and what she is doing at all times. If he chose to relax more with his wife’s whereabouts, then she wouldn’t constantly be sneaking off
Squeaky can show this when she brags she is the fastest thing on two feet. Squeaky can also show this when she keeps saying ¨ she's the fastest thing in the neighborhood and everyone knows that. And even the fact that she dusted off the request to go easy on the new girl. The lin girl in the opposite in some aspects.
