Thought Rea Vaya has recently been operating efficiently in terms urban transportation in Johannesburg, there has surely been quite a number of challenges that have been fought against. On the first day of the expansion of Rea Vaya services, there was few attempts to distract the services isolated incidents of vandalism and violence, regardless of the problems__ the day was a success. The city’s busiest route, the Soweto route had railways blocked and bus stops vandalised. Though throughout the day, everything returned to be normal and the buses were full with passengers on routes from the suburbs to the Rea Vaya stations including the core lines that connects Soweto with the Johannesburg CBD.

The Rea Vaya system’s dedicated lanes, mid-road bus stops and its specialised traffic lights that enables a rapid bus services in the city centers, by far the lanes are always empty, buses mostly block bus lanes at the stops and there is often congestion of regular traffic in places where the bus lanes used to be accessible to other vehicles. The current situation is that minibus taxis are not allowed to drive in the BRT lanes, which leads to inefficiency in transportation in some scenarios as the taxis cause traffic congestion in regular lanes and majority of the commuters are unable to get to work on
