CHAPTER -1 INTRODUCTION Ayurveda Ayurveda is a holistic system of medicine that is indigenous to and widely practiced in India. The word Ayurveda is a Sanskrit term meaning .science of life. Ayu means “life” or “daily living” and Veda is“knowing”. Ayurveda was first recorded in the Vedas, The world’s oldest extant literature. This healing system has been practiced in daily life in India for more than 5,000 years [1]. As per Ayurveda the health and the wellness of an individual depends upon the balance between the mind and the body. Ayurveda aims to help an individual achieve balance between mind and body so one can reach to state of everlasting and supreme bliss i.e. Moksha and become living expression of the divinity[2]. Wherever there is transformation, there is Pitta (doing its job). Whether it is in the GI tract, liver, skin, eyes or brain doesn 't matter, for these are all locations where Pitta works [4]. These people are of medium height, are slender and body frame may be delicate. Their chests are not as flat as those of vata people and they show a medium prominence of veins and muscle tendons. They have many moles or freckles which are bluish or brownish-red. The bones are not as prominent as in the vata individual. Muscle development is moderate. The pitta complexion may be coppery, yellowish, reddish or fair. The skin is soft. Warm and less wrinkled than vata skin. The hair is thin, silky, red or brownish and there is a tendency toward premature graying of hair and hair loss. The eyes may be gray, peen or cooper-brown and sharp the eyeballs will be of medium prominence. The conjunctiva is moist and copper-colored. The nails are soft.
